Hi,
I would like to introduce us into a topic of Fake News and Social Media. We have
heard about influence of fake news to the last US presidential elections. Fake
news is a message / article that is intentionally not true. We can assume that
the fake news can discredit institution / person, but who is responsible for creating fake news?
Is it good method to achieve competitive advantage over your opponents?
That are additional questions that are part of my thoughts... but let's go back to the article.
The authors describes briefly history of fake news and highlights the role of social
media in wide spreading fake news during last US presidential elections.
Please read an article and try to answer for below questions:

1. How can we distinguish fake news from real articles? Have you ever spread fake news to your friends?
ReplyDeleteI have never spread fake news to my friends. In general I only post or inform about things that are not rumours rather about worth participating events. Of course when it comes to articles it is hard to distinguish fake news from real articles. Very often I read articles published in the well-known and “safe” sources but still sometimes those information are not 100% true. It is because of content creators or publishers that want to provide their’s personal opinion instead of facts.
2. Do you believe that the fake news helped Donald Trump to win election? Maybe it is a kind of fake news?
It is true that people used advertisements and tried some psychological tricks to draw some unconscious attention to choose him over other candidates. I am not an expert in psychology, but I am aware of manipulation and that you can use certain phrases to emphasise what you want to achieve. So probably there was such possibility.
3. What do you think about a work for this kind of company, which is specialised in propaganda and fake news? Would you like to work in such place? Why?
I would not like to work in such place, simply because I don’t see it as a good job. I don’t like manipulations, using psychological tricks and making someone choose something they might not want to. It is not only unethical but also harmful, since with such people around we will not trust anyone and world will not be a good place.
Hello once again.
DeleteThanks for your opinion. I have similar problem to distinguish fake news when I read article from international websites. Unfortunately we can find "copies" of such fake article in another websites what makes such rumour more reliable. I am not expert in psychology too, so I have to agree with you.

Delete1. How can we distinguish fake news from real articles? Have you ever spread fake news to your friends?
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion the most efficient way to distinguish fake news from real articles is to check them by carrying out evidence confirming them or forward them to experts to give their opinion. Of course it is also possible to compare the content with the collected knowledge in this area.
I think I have spread fake news but unconsciously. Of course I thought that it was truth – not a fake.
2. Do you believe that the fake news helped Donald Trump to win election? Maybe it is a kind of fake news?
I see that we are making a vicious circle :) I haven't studied this problem but as far as I'm concerned, there is a grain of truth in it. Psychological tricks are very popular these days so it may be a truth...
3. What do you think about a work for this kind of company, which is specialised in propaganda and fake news? Would you like to work in such place? Why?
Personally, I wouldn’t like to work for such company. It’s because of my beliefs. I do not want to support falsehoods, lies and improper secrets.
Nevertheless we are not able to check that what we read - because we do not have enough time to do that. In my opinion fake news should be banned by web browsers / search engines when somebody report such kind of abuse and it will be confirmed.
DeleteAs I wrote comment above - sometimes we can find fake news on multiple websites... what makes validation extremely hard.
I am still waiting for first positive answer for 3rd question.
Thanks a lot.
1. How can we distinguish fake news from real articles? Have you ever spread fake news to your friends?
ReplyDeleteThere is no surefire method. One method would be to verify the sources, if any are at all referenced. A bit of logic and common sense also goes a long way. Checking more and different information sources is also never a bad idea. But then, sometimes a false information is copied from one source to another, where it is taken at face value.
I think I haven't spread FN to my friends. I rarely ever spread news around, let alone 'fake news'.
2. Do you believe that the fake news helped Donald Trump to win election? Maybe it is a kind of fake news?
I've already written about it. Much of the information in the news may be imprecise, misleading or right out false. But the term 'fake news' is a rethorical device to throw around in political discourse. Mr Trump has called a TV network 'fake news' and said medium was arguably not trying to help him get elected. But maybe it had an opposite effect through some kind of reverse psychology. This would mean that yes, 'fake news' helped Trump win.
3. What do you think about a work for this kind of company, which is specialized in propaganda and fake news? Would you like to work in such place? Why?
Well, I usually like the more technical stuff. Otherwise I might have become a lawyer for example. So I don't think it would bring me as much satisfaction, or even that I'd be good in this line of work. It might be an interesting and creative side job, but unfortunately it entails some legal risk as well.
Thanks for your response. We agree that it is expensive to verify information. We have to spend time to validate sources where we should be able to confirm a news.
DeleteThat is interesting what you wrote in 2nd point. I am not involved in any kind of research about fake news influence for presidental election in US. I was curious about opinions of this course participants and I wanted to talk about something different than process mining ;)
1.How can we distinguish fake news from real articles? Have you ever spread fake news to your friends?
ReplyDeleteIf we can't find similar information from other source it is very likely that this is fake news. I don't have other idea how to recognise fake news from news.
2.Do you believe that the fake news helped Donald Trump to win election? Maybe it is a kind of fake news?
I don't know what to think about it...from one hand it is possible (like every commercial which increase demand), but from other we can't examine it in any possible way. We could only suppose.
3.What do you think about a work for this kind of company, which is specialised in propaganda and fake news? Would you like to work in such place? Why?
I think that this type of question is unreliable...everyone could say "no way!" but to be honest if they will paid really big money, most of us will work with any resistance. That's my opinion.
Hi, thanks for your opinion. I have to agree with you. We can assume that we met a fake news if we can not find similar information anywhere. What if someone publish "hot news", which is not published anywhere yet? You will ignore that information what can lead to something bad...
DeleteWe have to be very careful with such kind of assumptions.
Knowledge is consistent. If any information sent in social media has a revolutionary character, one should have serious doubts as to its truthfulness. Generally, I do not use social media. I have never seen the need to distribute false information. For me it is important to arouse trust and not sensation. I would not like to work in a company which goal is buildinga false image of the world. Regarding the presidential election in the US, I will answer diplomatically - I do not have enough knowledge to say something on this topic.
ReplyDeleteWieslaw, thanks for your input to the discussion. I agree with you. My answer for second question would be similar ... :)
Delete1. How can we distinguish fake news from real articles? Have you ever spread fake news to your friends?
ReplyDeleteI think that the best to do this kind of distingion is that, that you need to be in particuar situation and then you know which ine is fake. When it comes to news it will be very hard because (and this is very often situation in Poland) the same situatiion can be shown in very different way. So I think that the best is to gather information about topic that we are interest in and then we should take some "average" of all data and then you can be more or less sure we one can be fake.
2. Do you believe that the fake news helped Donald Trump to win election? Maybe it is a kind of fake news?
I don't know. Maybe there is a little bit of truth in this statement but I don't know.
3. What do you think about a work for this kind of company, which is specialised in propaganda and fake news? Would you like to work in such place? Why?
I would not like to work in this kind of place. First thing is that I have lack of writing skills, second thing is that kind of job is not very interesting for me (I think of myself as a more technical person).
Hi, In my opinion best option is to not participate in message sharing when it is not a part of our interests. If we do not have enough knowledge to participate in a discussion we should not share any news.
DeleteThanks.
1. How can we distinguish fake news from real articles? Have you ever spread fake news to your friends?
ReplyDeleteI try to use trusted sources of information. If I have any doubts about the truth I look for confirmation from other sources. There are also such news which for the common sense are not true. I do not distribute information about which I am not 100% sure.
2. Do you believe that the fake news helped Donald Trump to win election? Maybe it is a kind of fake news?
I don't know if fake news was used in this practice. However, it was definitely an analysis of the personality of the users and their political interests and serving them information that was supposed to influence their decisions.
3. What do you think about a work for this kind of company, which is specialised in propaganda and fake news? Would you like to work in such place? Why?
I would not like to participate in propaganda. Awareness of the manipulation of people and their views would be difficult to bear. I know, however, that this involves a lot of money, which may be a great temptation for some people.
Are you able to share if us list of trusted sources? Maybe such kind of portal that will contain only verified news would be interesting for people.
DeleteI have similar method:
I do not distribute information which is not part of my interests, because I can not verify is it true.
I want to add something to 3rd question. We have a lot of people who work for companies not specialised in propaganda but for instance sell trash to elderly person. I can not imagine how can they work in such place?
Hi!
ReplyDeleteObviously, there is no 100%-sure method to distinguish fake news from true ones. This is a case of openmindness - to draw your own conclusions, you have to put some effort and to be brave. What we have to do nowadays, is to switch on our thinking and mindfulness, when we read anything.
I’ve never spread such fake news, even for fun, because I wouldn’t like to receive such news by myself. For me the things have twisted up in this respect. Humans forgot, what the technology is for. It is not to make life more difficult, but it should make it easier.
I believe that fake news could help Donald Trump, and that were fake news as such. I do not understand that, because for intelligent people it should be very easy to catch something like that and avoid it. But I guess this is because people are lazy and feel more comfortable. To draw your own conclusions, you have to put some effort and to be brave.
As for work in such companies specialized in propaganda and fake news, I wouldn’t never agree to be a part of such team. I need to do useful things, not destroying ones. I need to work with deeper sense and in accordance to my internal personal ethics and rules.
BR, Marta
Hello,
DeleteI have to agree with you. We have not 100% guarantee that we read a true.
Unfortunately everyone put in a second part of the answer information that he/she does not share fake news. So my question is: are mentioned research is not correct? Maybe we share fake news because we do not know that is a not true information?
1) How can we distinguish fake news from real articles? Have you ever spread fake news to your friends?
ReplyDeleteI try not to distribute such messages. Before I spread it among my friends, I try to verify it and judge whether it's reliable or whether it's lies. Of course, sometimes I succeed and sometimes not ;-), but no one is perfect.
2) Do you believe that the fake news helped Donald Trump to win election? Maybe it is a kind of fake news?
I think that such messages can help in the election. Not all people distinguish lies from truth, and some do not want to hear the truth - they prefer lies that are comfortable for them.
3) What do you think about a work for this kind of company, which is specialised in propaganda and fake news? Would you like to work in such place? Why?
I wouldn't like to work in such a place. I value truth and honesty. I don't like lies and hypocrisy. So I'm not suitable for working in such a place.
Hello,
Deleteit is a good practice to not spread an messages generally. It allows us to completely avoid a risk that we will be a part of distributors list.
Unfortunately news sharing has become part of our world. It is hard to avoid fake news sharing - because if we find something interesting we want to share with our friends.
How can we distinguish fake news from real articles? Have you ever spread fake news to your friends?
ReplyDeleteI think the easiest solution is having trusted sources. If you don't have such in one particular topic you should confirm this news in many places. I haven't spread fake news.
Do you believe that the fake news helped Donald Trump to win election? Maybe it is a kind of fake news?
I would be not surprised if it is a true. I think a case of Cambridge Analitica is kind of standard in western elections. Quesion is if we still live in democratical system?
What do you think about a work for this kind of company, which is specialised in propaganda and fake news? Would you like to work in such place? Why?
I think they are unfair people and I wouldn't like to work in such a place.
Hi,
DeleteI believe that yours opinion is close to Przemek. I would like to repeat my question - do you have an example of trusted source? I think we can find such example but it is very hard to find it. Person who works in such kind of source can put accidentally fake news (forget to validate information, mistake and so on).
How can we distinguish fake news from real articles? Have you ever spread fake news to your friends?
ReplyDeleteThis is the same as in the case of exam solving, where you have to mark the correct answer. To decide whether information is true or false, you need to use your knowledge and experience. If I do not have adequate knowledge of the subject, I am not able to confirm the truthfulness of the information.
Do you believe that the fake news helped Donald Trump to win election? Maybe it is a kind of fake news?
As I wrote in my answer to the first question. There is a lot of contradictory information about the election of the troupe as president. In order to distinguish them correctly, one should study the subject. Unfortunately, there are no clear data. Both sides have the strength to support their arguments. Truth lies in the middle.
What do you think about a work for this kind of company, which is specialised in propaganda and fake news? Would you like to work in such place? Why?
Propaganda has always existed. Every government or institution wants to create its own positive image and confirm its reasons. The desire to create a positive image is the reason for the creation of companies that create a positive image. Working for such a company is not ethical, but there is a need for such service
Thanks for your opinion. I completely agree with you. That is why I think that we should share message if it is part of our interests and we can classify it as a true or fake information.
DeleteThere were a lot of topics about this. Also in our other subjects there is this topic. I'm already tired of it(
ReplyDelete1) How can we distinguish fake news from real articles? Have you ever spread fake news to your friends?
Yes, as I wrote in the responses to similar topics. You can make an algorithm for finding real news from fake. But for this you need to know what the fake news was for. This may be for trolling, propaganda, for the sake of advertising, some mass media do it for the sake of excitement and growing popularity for them.
2) Do you believe that the fake news helped Donald Trump to win election? Maybe it is a kind of fake news?
I studied his pre-election race. He's a populist. Just pressed on the "sick" topics of ordinary Americans. Surely he had propaganda. I think so, he won it. Unfortunately now many people use this algorithm (Putin)
3) What do you think about a work for this kind of company, which is specialised in propaganda and fake news? Would you like to work in such place? Why?
Recently, Elon Mask something like this presented. But I do not think that this will help. Most people want to be deceived. They like to be elevated by their ideas, and if the media do it - they will believe it
Hello, thanks for your opinion. It is good that some people can distinguish propaganda from valuable content. Unfortunately most of people has a problem to think about that what they hear / read and they will follow populism. Do you agree? How can we change that?
DeleteRegards
1. How can we distinguish fake news from real articles? Have you ever spread fake news to your friends?
ReplyDeleteThere is some of the methods. For example we may take into consideration phrases use in such articles, language (if it is adequate for described field) and what is the proportion between sentences presenting author’s opinions and describing some events with affection and sentences dryly presenting the facts. Also the good idea is to verify the news with posts presented on the reliable newspapers or websites to be sure that such fact was also described in other places. I never spread any fake news amongst my friends.
2. Do you believe that the fake news helped Donald Trump to win election? Maybe it is a kind of fake news?
I don’t think so, in my opinion statement that fake news helped Donald Trump with winning the election is the fake news and the main goal of it is to discredit Trump as the USA president. I strongly believe that people who were voting made the main decision based on their true beliefs, not just on some fake news, presented during the campaign.
3. What do you think about a work for this kind of company, which is specialised in propaganda and fake news? Would you like to work in such place? Why?
I don’t have a strong opinion on this topic. I know that fake news may do some harm but on the other hand I think that people should be wise enough to differ fake from real news.
Hi Lukasz. Thanks for your opinion. It is very interesting to trace / classify fake news using key words analysis / sentences analysis. Do you know an algorithm, which is able to perform some kind of classification?
DeleteUnfortunately I have strongly different opinion about 3rd point. People who works in such kind of company are well prepared to their work. They know a lot of manipulation methods and unfortunately (it is my opinion that is not a result of my research) their target are eldery people in most of cases.

ReplyDelete1. How can we distinguish fake news from real articles? Have you ever spread fake news to your friends?
ReplyDeleteYou have to compare every bit of information. It's sounds crazy, but if it is possible to change the whole meaning of the dataset by changing only a small piece of it, you should be really cautious, cause it's easy to imply an intention playing with words.
2. Do you believe that the fake news helped Donald Trump to win election? Maybe it is a kind of fake news?
WTF is Donald Trump? I don't know:| although being a politician involves selling lies to a biomass IMHO.
3. What do you think about a work for this kind of company, which is specialised in propaganda and fake news? Would you like to work in such place? Why?
Nope. Not interested. It seems to be a waste of time for a living being to work on the contrary to social interest, fueling a certain group of people.
Hi, yes it sounds crazy :)... even if we assume that we are able to validate each bit of data information that will be published --- mechanisms of fake news will evaluate. Only law regulations in my opinion can solve / minimise the problem. Unfortunately such kind of mechanism is part of politician life - they can put fake accusations / news to attack political opponent.
Delete1 How can we distinguish fake news from real articles? Have you ever spread fake news to your friends?
ReplyDeleteFigure 3 from the linked paper suggest that good indicator of fake news might be receiving it via social media. In the old channels, there was sometimes someone who verified the news before pushing it further, in social media its close to impossible: people just pass the links along and the news spread like wildfire.
2 Do you believe that the fake news helped Donald Trump to win election? Maybe it is a kind of fake news?
There is no way to tell this, I think. I am not even sure which one is worse to decide election outcome: fake news or this so-called "presidential debate" - word fencing.
3 What do you think about a work for this kind of company, which is specialised in propaganda and fake news? Would you like to work in such place? Why?
That depends. As a typing monkey/troll, it is rather not to my taste, but in the research and effectiveness evaluation branch - it might be very interesting job.
Hi, unfortunately I do not think so is it a good idea to validate information by checking social media. It was my first thought when I read it, but we know a lot of people. Some of them could be an expert in a topic that was presented in an article. If our friend shares this kind of information we can assume it is true. Or we can ask about opinion
DeleteI have never spread fake news, at least intentionally. If the information doesn't look obviously wrong then probably only method to distinguish fake from real is checking facts in other sources and using common knowledge and sense.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't like to work in a company that produces fake news for manipulating an audience. However, the propaganda is not always wrong. For example South Korea with help from USA uses propaganda to fight with North Korean regime. Some time ago I read an update that one of the current efforts is hacking North Korean television as now messages can be distributed only by radio or pamphlets and reach only people living near the border.
Hi, thanks. I am not sure can anybody write that It has never spread fake news ... if we shared any content in our life, because we would be not aware of fake content hidden in an article ... sometimes article looks fine but has hidden propaganda message and so on. But I can only congratulate you. Thanks for your opinion.
Delete1. How can we distinguish fake news from real articles? Have you ever spread fake news to your friends?
ReplyDeleteIt's difficult to distinguish a fake news from the real one, because each of the false news has a grain of truth in itself. It's best to verify the message in other sources. I have never spread a fake news.
2. Do you believe that the fake news helped Donald Trump to win election? Maybe it is a kind of fake news?
They could have an effect, especially on those who hesitated. It's easy to tarnish someone's opinion through false messages.
3. What do you think about a work for this kind of company, which is specialised in propaganda and fake news? Would you like to work in such place? Why?
I would never want to work in a company that specializes in creating and disseminating false news. Such behavior is at odds with my beliefs and values that guide me in my life.
Hello, thanks a lot for reply. I agree with you in all those points. Fake news or even true message is not able to convince a person to change its mind in a lot of cases. But hesitated person can become a victim of fake news. Fake news can manipulate even my opinion. I have found some of cases when I thought it was true ... but it was not :(
Delete1. How can we distinguish fake news from real articles? Have you ever spread fake news to your friends?
ReplyDeleteI did not distribute false information to my friends by spamming their messages, which does not mean that I never gave away any rumors. Nowadays, the fall of authorities and values is very difficult to distinguish between truth and falsehood. The only 100% way to distinguish false information from the real is to have knowledge on a given topic from the source, or the ability to appeal to strong authority. Another way is to search many websites for the same information, preferably if the portals present opposite political views.
2. Do you believe that the fake news helped Donald Trump to win election? Maybe it is a kind of fake news?
Messages have always been an important tool for exercising power and overthrowing it. I think that in this case it was possible, however, a multitude of factors does not allow for a clear answer whether it actually was.
3. What do you think about work for this kind of company, which is specialized in propaganda and fake news? Would you like to work in such place? Why?
A good question, however, any work in the media involves such risks. This is how our world is built, there is no independent newspaper because every private or state is controlled by influence and money and open opposition to these influences can end badly for the editor of a given newspaper or the publisher of the newspaper. This is always a battle of interests.
Thanks for your reply. My intention was not to limit the discussion to spam. I thought about a situation when we meet with friends and we will say: hi man did you know that a ..... and that will be our input for fake news spread, or we like / share in our facebook wall completely nonsense message.
Delete1. How can we distinguish fake news from real articles? Have you ever spread fake news to your friends?
ReplyDeleteIt’s not easy. You’d have to investigate each piece of information in the news yourself. Today we’re bombarded with all types of information from everywhere, so I consider being 100% free of fake news already impossible. I also have no idea if I have spread such news myself.
2. Do you believe that the fake news helped Donald Trump to win election? Maybe it is a kind of fake news?
It is really hard to measure. I think that politcs is all about makieng good impression so two options are possible: fake news helped Trump to win elections or this is a fake news.
3. What do you think about work for this kind of company, which is specialized in propaganda and fake news? Would you like to work in such place? Why?
No I don't want to work in such company because I think that it would be unethical. However there is one interesting thing in such job, algorithms created to analyze and spread fake news.
Hello Katarzyna. Yes it is true. I have the same ;) That is why I will never write: I have never spread fake news - because I do not know it. Sometimes I can hear / read something, which is fake news and I know - it has not a sense. But I do not know was not I a victim of fake news, which I spread. I can assume I did it more than I did not - if we analyse billions of information that are available in nowadays.
Delete1. How can we distinguish fake news from real articles? Have you ever spread fake news to your friends?
ReplyDeleteYes, I did, unintentionally but I did. The only way to distinguish one from another is to check such news in different sources and in most cases, we do not have time for that
2. Do you believe that the fake news helped Donald Trump to win election? Maybe it is a kind of fake news?
It might help, but I don’t think that it was a significant factor. I’m sure that he would won even without fake news. Changes in US society were to strong so I wouldn’t consider fake news as an important factor.
3. What do you think about a work for this kind of company, which is specialised in propaganda and fake news? Would you like to work in such place? Why?
No, it is against my own, personal rules.
Dawid thanks for your opinion. It is first positive and clear answer during above discussion[!]. I have to agree with you in 100%. Thanks a lot for your honest answer once again. Regards.
DeleteHow can we distinguish fake news from real articles? Have you ever spread fake news to your friends?
ReplyDeleteI have never spread fake news among my friends. The main difference between real and fake news is a reliable source of information. Just like with the research papers it is important to check the information that we use and make sure it is consistent with the logic in mathematic sense.
Do you believe that the fake news helped Donald Trump to win election? Maybe it is a kind of fake news?
Fake news was widely used in the US election. Even if it has not been the main factor of success of Donald Trump it has become a dangerous precedent. Modern societies must develop ways to cope with this threat to avoid informational chaos.
What do you think about a work for this kind of company, which is specialised in propaganda and fake news? Would you like to work in such place? Why?
I would not like to work in such company. Anyone how is taking seriously their academic career should avoid working in any organization that misleads people. It may damage our image as a scientist.
How can we distinguish fake news from real articles? Have you ever spread fake news to your friends? Only by comparing them with other sources. It's really hard to distinguish fake from real news. Spreading fake news across my friends? Why would I do that?
ReplyDeleteDo you believe that the fake news helped Donald Trump to win election? Maybe it is a kind of fake news?
My question is, even if fake news helped him, so what? He has won, end of story. A lot of average Americans have voted for him. He had good arguments for them, almost the same story happened in Poland. Why are we talking about politics here?
What do you think about a work for this kind of company, which is specialised in propaganda and fake news? Would you like to work in such place? Why?
If someone is willing to pay then someone is going to provide such service. It's very simple rule of economy. In this particular case if you are good at spreading fake news then you can get easily reach. I wouldn't work, but I would create it :D
How can we distinguish fake news from real articles? Have you ever spread the fake news to your friends?
ReplyDeleteIt's not so easy to distinguish fake news - algorithms are made in a way to pretend real stories/facts connected with your personal beliefs. Because of that probability that you will believe in it is really high.
And of course, as jokes or something, who didn't do that?:)
Do you believe that the fake news helped Donald Trump to win an election? Maybe it is a kind of fake news?
I am not a detective-journalist and also not so interested in US politics, can't say.
What do you think about a work for this kind of company, which is specialised in propaganda and fake news? Would you like to work in such place? Why
If somebody believes that it is for a good purpose I suppose it's easy to work in a place like that. Like politics, if you believe in one party you will write wrongly about other parties with no problem. Still, it is only some assumption.
1. How can we distinguish fake news from real articles?
ReplyDeleteHave you ever spread fake news to your friends?
It's all about one's knowledge, experience and the source of fake news. If the source looks fishy and unreliable, it's really a matter of few minutes to find out that the news is fake. It's fake news from reliable sources that is really dangerous, because it's really hard to prove that it's fake.
2. Do you believe that the fake news helped Donald Trump to win election? Maybe it is a kind of fake news?
I don't know, I'm not that into American politics, but everything is possible.
3. What do you think about a work for this kind of company, which is specialised in propaganda and fake news? Would you like to work in such place? Why?
I wouldn't feel good about myself if I worked in such a place, but this is a matter of individuals choice and consciousness.
