Week 7 [21.05 - 27.05.2018] Memory Transfer

I have recently read an interesting article about this huge discovery:
http://newsroom.ucla.edu/releases/ucla-biologists-transfer-a-memory
It is about transfering memory between marine snails by injecting RNA from one to another.

The specific description of the method used in this research is presented in the mentioned article. To encourage You all to read the article I just say that scientists took some of the RNA from the snails which received small electric shocks and placed it to other snails. Then these other snails – while tapped - reacted almost just like the first ones, even though they weren’t given the shocks at all!

Such discovery is incredibly important – further researches may focus on transfering other parts of the RNA which in fact can be equal with transfering the memories. It can be priceless in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, where the main cure is bringing back lost memories. It will also hugely help people with PTSD – with altering traumatic memories with the new ones.

What is even more interesting, similar invention was described in the novel called „We can remember it for you wholesale” by Phillip K. Dick and in the movie (based on that novel) called „Total recall”. Like I wrote few weeks ago, commented on one of the articles – science-fiction writers predicted a lot of nowadays discoveries.

Here I have some questions for You:
1. Do you know any other predictions presented in books or in the movies, which became real? If you know some, what is your favourite?
2. Do you think that memory tranfer can be used in the entertainment – like in „Total recall” -  and how so?
3. Can you think of another usage for the memory transfer, besides these mentioned above?
4. In your opinion, is there any danger coming from the described discovery?

Week 7 [21.05 - 27.05.2018] Virtual, 3D tutor in schools

During a conference in Rome I was watching an interesting presentation. International team presented their prototype of a platform for creating an immersive, 3D tutor that was learning young children in schools. It is still in very early stage where they need special rooms and equipment but first lessons looked very good. Children were fascinated with their own alien and the fact that they could interact with him.
It is still hard to say how it will evolve but we can try to think about near future of this platform:

1. what do you think about ideas like that?
2. would you like to implement such ideas in schools?
3. If you could decide about the direction of such system, how would you direct it?

Week 7 [21.05.2018 – 27.05.2018] Building outpost of the new.

Week 7 [21.05.2018 – 27.05.2018] Building outpost of the new.

Since the European Union aims to generate by renewable energy sources up to 80% of the total electric demand by 2050, the ideas towards integration traditional and distributed sources have been developed. Smart grid is one of such idea. In fact it helps to provide the concept of an interactive methodology implemented in the design IT tool for planning, observing and operating energy power infrastructure.
I’ve taken part in international project called Rigrid (The Rural Intelligent Grid) Network led in the framework of the initiative ERA-Net Smart Grids Plus. Its result is demonstration installation for modern renewable and distributed energy in Podlaskie voivodship in Poland.
Please visit website:
Especially, I recommend the description of project’s benefits:

Please answer the questions:
1. Have you heard of any Polish or foreign smartgrid projects?
2. What are pros and cons such systems?
3. What will IoT ane e-mobility will bring to such systems?

Best,
Marta

Week 7 [21.05 - 27.05.2018] Electric Cars

(on behalf of Nikodem Polak)
Hi everyone,

I would like to introduce you to some articles related to electric cars.
This is a topic on the top especially in Poland, keeping in mind this loud plan of Prime Minister Morawiecki. I think that each of you has a phrase in this topic. I hope that reading the article below will raise your knowledge and share your industriousness by asking questions. I do not expect, of course, that you will read at least half of this analysis (I hope that at least a summary):

1. Are electric cars really so ecological?
2. Is it possible for us to be 100% able to switch to electric cars considering the limited number of raw materials and technological problems?
3. Based on your assumptions and data contained in the report, do you think that Morawiecki's plan for electric cars is real?
4. Which country in your opinion will be the leader in the production of electric cars?

Week 7 [21.05 - 27.05.2018] Fake news in Social Media

Hi,

I would like to introduce us into a topic of Fake News and Social Media. We have
heard about influence of fake news to the last US presidential elections. Fake
news is a message / article that is intentionally not true. We can assume that
the fake news can discredit institution / person, but who is responsible for creating fake news?
Is it good method to achieve competitive advantage over your opponents?

That are additional questions that are part of my thoughts... but let's go back to the article.

The authors describes briefly history of fake news and highlights the role of social
media in wide spreading fake news during last US presidential elections.

Please read an article and try to answer for below questions:

  1. How can we distinguish fake news from real articles? Have you ever spread fake news to your friends?
  2. Do you believe that the fake news helped Donald Trump to win election? Maybe it is a kind of fake news?
  3. What do you think about a work for this kind of company, which is specialised in propaganda and fake news? Would you like to work in such place? Why?

Week 7 [21.05 - 27.05.2018] Brain computer interfacing:

Hi,
I research the brain-computer interfaces.
Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), or brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) involve real-time direct connections between the brain and a computer
EEG    BCIs might enable individuals to reliably communicate when they are unable to communicate behaviorally
Please answer this questions:
1. Can you list the benefits of using BCI systems?
2. What is the risk of using BCI systems?
3. In which areas will computer brain systems be most useful?
4. Do you think that EEG toys  will become popular?  Such as the Puzzlebox Orbit.

Week 7 [21.05 - 27.05.2018] Face recognation

Hi everyone

I have found an intersting article about face recognation in China.  Link below:

Author of this article says:
„Over the past few years, computers have become incredibly good at recognizing faces, and the technology is expanding quickly in China in the interest of both surveillance and convenience. Face recognition might transform everything from policing to the way people interact every day with banks, stores, and transportation services”

Please answer this questions:
     1. Are face recognation a safe method to access buildings, pay for something etc?
     2. Do you think face recognation will be avaible in our country?
     3. What about our privacy?
     4.  Do you know another face recognation systems?
