Hello everyone,
This week we have a
lot of topics. I found an interesting speech on ted.com. The speech is
"The wonderful and terrifying implications of computers that can
learn". Then I noticed that this topic was
discussed before :-(
So I found a
short article about the Internet of Things (LINK)
Internet of Things
(IoT) is considered as an integral part of Internet, also defined as a global
network infrastructure and dynamic composed of a large number of objects, able
to communicate and interact with each other and with users.
There are many
problems in the security of the Internet. There are things which need to be
solved such as network transmission security, privacy protection, information
processing security. New protocols will be needed to ensure communications with
devices for IoT. in the following areas
such as health e.g. remote patient monitoring or controlling of the elderly and
smart cities distributed pollution monitoring,
intelligent lighting systems and many others...
IoT Challenges: World Scientific News 41 2016 article “Study: Protocols and Challenging Issues in IoT” (p. 98 -106) (If someone wants something longer for spring evenings J)
Security: Increased digitization and automation creates
new security threat.
Enterprise: Security
issues could pose safety risks.
Consumer Privacy: Potential of privacy contravention.
Data: Lots of data
will be generated, both for big data and personal data.
Storage Management:
The cost-effective data should be identified by the industries.
Server Technologies: The investments should be increased.
1. IoT – a chance
or threat? What is your opinion?
2. IoT - is
it another revolution? What will be later?
3. Could you
give us the most interesting example of IoT devices? Or can anyone give some
artificial example in this field?

The rise of the Internet of Things (IoT) has already sparked concerns about new threats: now users are worried that badly configured gadgets might provide a backdoor for hackers looking to break into corporate or home networks. The rise of the IoT could lead to all sorts of devices being connected to the internet, from smart energy meters, lighting or air conditioning systems through to the smart fridge or washing machine. Researches predict there will be over 28 billion IoT devices installed by 2020. But this expansion in connectedness brings new security threats. I reckon IoT is a big chance with additional minuses as cyber defence threats. The Biggest treat about IoT concerns the data and privacy issues. IT guys warn that the small size and limited processing power of many connected devices could limit the use of encryption and other security measures; it may also be difficult to patch flaws in low-cost and essentially disposable IoT devices and therefore our privacy and our data will be unprotected and in danger of. In my opinion IoT is not a revolution but only an evolution. Like electricity, motors, computers in the past, IoT will be the next step into the modern world. As for the third question I think IoT won’t work without Artificial Intelligence. The realization of IoT depends on being able to gain the insights hidden in the vast and growing seas of data available. Since current approaches don’t scale to IoT volumes, the future realization of IoT’s promise is dependent on machine learning (based on AI) to find the patterns, correlations and anomalies that have the potential of enabling improvements in almost every facet of our daily lives.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comment, I agree with you. IoT development is very promising, however gives privacy threats. In the past, we collected data as much as we needed and as little as possible. IoT devices collect as much data as possible.
DeleteI am, on the other hand, a bit terrified with the vision of all kinds of gadgets and electronic stuff being connected to the Internet. People will become more and more addicted to virtual reality and fake and artificial life. What's more indeed, with so many devices connected to Internet hackers will be really able to show off all they talents. But I guess that this step in technological progress is inevitable and it might involve usage of artificial intelligence.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your answer. On the one hand, we have more and more devices that make life easier, on the other hand we are increasingly dependent on technology. What also has disadvantages ...
DeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteThe IoT pros and cons were treated at this forum before if I good remember so I would focus only at presented article that focuses on security aspects. Each technological step has often two purposes - companies want to sell their products and people want to make their lives "easier" even the pay for it money and their privacy. Devices and solutions included in IoT are exchanging TB of data about their users / customers to increase quality of a service. I think that a revolution will be used only in marketing because I haven't seen nothing extra ordinary. (comparing cost - current technology - results). I believe that in a future this technology will change our life - but not right now. It can be useful when it will able to help sick people in simple daily basis activities.
Thank you for your answer. In my opinion people working in the market will find the way to bring these devices to our homes ...
DeleteIoT is a lot of gadgets but also a lot of important devices that can facilitate seniors care and do a lot of good work in other areas ...
1. IoT – a chance or threat? What is your opinion?
ReplyDeleteInternet of Things is up for a while now, maybe in Poland it is still fresh and many people not from IT world don’t know much about it. I think that people should have possibility to check it out to understand how it works and what are the possibilities. In shopping centres and places visited often by customers there are no possibilities like that. During my internship in Orange I had chance to see how it works and try it myself. I think that having house with IoT included is pretty much game changer. Not all functionalities are crucial for me, they are rather gadgets but there are some that makes the difference in everyday life.
2. IoT - is it another revolution? What will be later?
I would not say that it is a revolution, this is another step in trying to ease life, everyday usage of devices and a chance to make some money. I know that it can help manage devices around the house like fridge, laundry, electricity, alarm and many more. It was said that thanks to that we can save some money on electricity, water and other utilities. But cost of such solution is high, not many companies offers solutions and you have no idea what will happen in few years, maybe there will be other solutions, that will force you to spend money again.
3. Could you give us the most interesting example of IoT devices? Or can anyone give some artificial example in this field?
There is a lot of stuff like that: Home and building automation, smart energy, multimedia, security and safety devices. Interesting example for me is smart door locks - opening locks with phone application, hubs controlling irrigation scheduling based on current and forecasted weather.
Thank you for the comment, I see the upcoming development of microprofessional systems, for example the energy when we are in the guests ...
ReplyDelete1. IoT – a chance or threat? What is your opinion?
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion IoT is a chance but only if used wisely. It gives opportunity to make some routine tasks made automatically and easy. We need only tu put sme effort to make it safe.
2. IoT - is it another revolution? What will be later?
I think IoT is not a revolution. I have heard about smart hauses for a last few years. I think about IoT as a process of development.
3. Could you give us the most interesting example of IoT devices? Or can anyone give some artificial example in this field?
Examples are many, from things that "take care" of babies and elders to feeding plants. the most popular are those tracking daily activities like number of steps and burned calories.
Thank you Kasia for your comment. I agree with you that IoT can make our lives easier. In my opinion there is more chances than Threats.
Delete1. IoT – a chance or threat? What is your opinion?
ReplyDeleteFor sure a chance but also a threat 😊 Almost every new technology become a threat.
Wifi – first version let to steel data from companies
Smarthopnes – do I really need to mention how many threats and problems it produced ?
Nuclear plant 😊
2. IoT - is it another revolution? What will be later?
It is not a revolution. It is an evolution. This is not something as new as everybody thinks. It becomes more and more popular thanks to other devices like smartphones, cloud computing and so on. The future will not bring any new revolution solution, but it will allow us to connect more devices in much more easy way
3. Could you give us the most interesting example of IoT devices? Or can anyone give some artificial example in this field?
A good example of IoT is used with “green” energy. Central hub is analyzing current energy consumption vs energy production from (for example) sun and when we have enough production it turns on most expensive devices like heat pump and so on. When the energy production is low and we do not need this device on it is automatically turned off so we have maximal profits from our “green” energy
I agree that it is not a revolution, it is an evolution. Very good example, I am also an adherer of heat pump applications. Thanks for comment,
Delete1. IoT – a chance or threat? What is your opinion?
ReplyDeleteI can hardly answer this question. It's a common argument. Let's say both. Like with everything, you can use knife to eat or to kill someone. It's up to you. There is always someone who wants to do something bad with something good.
2. IoT - is it another revolution? What will be later?
It's not a revolution. It's just a primitive small computer. It will miniaturise, be more powerful, nothing extraordinary to be honest.
3. Could you give us the most interesting example of IoT devices? Or can anyone give some artificial example in this field?
Smart homes, smart heart artificial pacemaker etc
Thank you for your comment. The primacy of these small computers often results from limited access to power. We can not use classical cryptography because of the high computational costs.
Delete1. IoT – a chance or threat? What is your opinion?
ReplyDeleteLike every technology it's a chance and a threat it's like asking the question nuclear technology a chance or a threat. Of course it's both depends from the 2. 2.IoT - is it another revolution? What will be later?
It's the revolution we have started many years ago and we call it miniaturization. We are at the stage where we can put chips and connect them to the network using small amount of energy. This is not new technology it's the same technology we had for ears but very small so we can put it everywhere. What will be next? Even smaller devices and more energy efficient.
3. Could you give us the most interesting example of IoT devices? Or can anyone give some artificial example in this field?
Good example is a beacon example and it's application in the stores. We can analyse customers behavior like we analyse internet traffic. We have amount of visitors, returining visitors, conversions and churns=)
Thanks for article.
Maciej Perlinski
Yes indeed. Devices are once smaller and their applications are once wider...
DeleteThe Internet of Things (IoT) is a concept according to which the identifiable objects may directly or indirectly collect, process and exchange data through the computer network. The usage of IoT in the management process becomes a prerequisite for the development of businesses, retaining a competitive advantage in the market. I can see the Internet of things as an innovation which raises companies economic efficiency and to outline the prospects for its development. In 2014, Internet of things consisted of nearly 2 billion devices, and in 2018 there may even 9 billion. This results in a continuous growth of Internet networks in enterprises and an implementation of new technologies, which improve management systems. It is estimated that until 2018 the main drivers for the development of the IoT in Poland, will be retail and consumer industry. Integration of systems used in these enterprises should result in achieving a high economic efficiency.
ReplyDeleteIf you like to read more about my thought about IOT please read my polish article from 2016.(http://www.krysinski.eu/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/mk2.pdf)
Thank you, the work contains many relevant observations - I quickly reviewed it, although I do not know if the attachment in Polish is legal on this blog:-) Thank you very much:-)
Delete1. IoT – a chance or threat? What is your opinion?
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion it is both. Almost every invention and idea used properly is a chance of development, easier life or some other improvement for humanity. But there are always peoples or companies that try to use them for their own purposes, often morally doubtfull. It went this way with a dynamit, radioactivity and many more further discoveries, inventions and ideas. So personally I recommend moderate entusiasm in IoT subject :)
2. IoT - is it another revolution? What will be later?
It depends. In the technology field it is not a revolution. It is just a development of previously existing technologies and ideas. It might be a kind of social and mental revolution, because we never had before e.g. the house that takes care about our needs. I think the next step is the remote monitoring of our health and on-line consultations with the doctors.
3. Could you give us the most interesting example of IoT devices? Or can anyone give some artificial example in this field?
Probably it is not the most interesting example, but I am a bit fascinated with an idea of a fridge taking care about diet of the owner and shopping :)
This example is very interesting. This is a strategic object. Rebuilt fridge can affect the condition of the owner ;-) Emilia - thanks for your comment.
DeleteAd. 1.
ReplyDeleteI guess, this time my opinion will not be too popular. As for me, the IoT is a threat. I am really afraid of the situation being permanently linked in and observed, and – in fact – controlled by unlimited (who can really guarantee the limits and safety?) group of people / tools. Our reality evaluates in such direction of becoming more and more a part of artificial system, it has already began. In my opinion, IoT means a lot of facilities and permanent flowing information – but do we really need this?
Ad. 2.
This is revolution moving in the direction of total limiting our independence and efficiency. I suppose very fast people will begin to link out such systems to regain freedom. In the future I predict to observe - in more and more cases - the reverse to life without IoT.
Ad. 3.
I have read about extraordinary project in Germany. It was a house equipped with intelligent control system with all the possible facilities, automatics etc. Apart from that it was autonomic building, i.e. producing enough energy to power up all the functions, all the media and even to ensure charging electrical car (self-powering parking place). everything was linked into one system, controlled in respect of switching-on, switching-off, adding or removing new elements and changing the parameters. This house did not required anything from outside.
Of course - this is real. Having many IoT devices we can not be sure of your privacy. This is a serious limitation. Intelligent house - on the one hand wonderful on the other, generates high start-up and servicing costs. Thank you for your comment.
Delete1. IoT – a chance or threat? What is your opinion?
ReplyDeleteGenerally I think that Internet of Things is a great chance for us. We love to monitor many areas of our lives. It solves many problems so far without solvable (for example the amount of food in the refrigerator or remote access to the iron). However security of transferred data is still a really serious problem.
2. IoT - is it another revolution? What will be later?
In my point of view it is a part of huge information technology revolution. It’s hard to guess what will be later. As it was written in the article – it depends on the users and the developers.
3. Could you give us the most interesting example of IoT devices? Or can anyone give some artificial example in this field?
It seems to me that the most interesting IoT devices will be those related to human health. They will be without a doubt the most important IoTs.
I agree with you. We need to keep in mind that quit health is very sensitive data. Here you need special protection. See this important information for insurance companies, employers, etc ..
Delete1. IoT – a chance or threat? What is your opinion?
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, eventually it is a chance rather than a threat. If we know how to safely use IoT it brings much more possibilities than we think.
2. IoT - is it another revolution? What will be later?
It is really hard to indicate what is going to be next. Probably, it is going to be something improved of what we know/use today. It won't be a revolution. IoT wasn't, too.
3. Could you give us the most interesting example of IoT devices? Or can anyone give some artificial example in this field?
It could be a mix of IoT and AI. Some algorithms providing new functionalities. Being one step ahead is always a gain.
The combination of IoT & AL looks very promising. But it is difficult to predict how it will develop ... It seems to me that such a combination is good for marketing reasons. Thank you Kasia for your comment.
DeleteDear Ladies and Gentlemen,
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for the discussion. Thank you for all your comments. Thank you for your opinions and interesting examples.
Best wishes

1. IoT – a chance or threat? What is your opinion?
ReplyDeleteIn current circumstances I think it is rather hard to find real world application for IoT. It is rather popular buzz word like blockchain. devices that are communicating in some specific way (cable, wifi, NFC) are not new and are on the market for long time already. So strait to the point of this question neither
2. IoT - is it another revolution? What will be later?
If companies will find some real world commercial application for connected devices it will be rather evolution than revolution.
3. Could you give us the most interesting example of IoT devices? Or can anyone give some artificial example in this field?
remote medical equipment
autonomous drones or transport devices
For me IoT is both: chance and threat. I fully support development of IoT in industries. Faster circulation of information can create better products and services for enterprises. On the other hand I don’t appreciate invasion of IoT in everyday life. In my opinion refrigerator ordering food is pseudo innovation. There must also be a kind of security line against process of destroying privacy. Personally, I don’t even have Facebook account and I’m totally happy without it. The reason is I’m thinking about most of new innovations as worse solutions that the “old” one. For me it is similar with IoT – in private life it don’t give really significant progress.
ReplyDeleteI think IoT is not a revolution. It is only new way to attract customers to slightly improved products. I haven’t met any interesting implementation of IoT.
