As TED presentation was not enough (mea culpa) I also want to present an article related with the Holy Grail of mobile augmented reality. It is a flexible and comfortable usage of AR in outdoor solutions: http://repository.tudelft.nl/islandora/object/uuid:8ee2f813-3d3e-4fc5-8a1c-0a4596a4292b/datastream/OBJ/view
Currently the main problem of this technology is related with the usage of it. AR can help us in many different segments of our life, it can improve our productivity, ensure safety, minimize mistakes that we are doing during our work but all of this need a lot of special hardware and that is making everything much more complicated.
1. How do you see outdoor usage of AR ?
2. What it need to be usable for everyone ?
3. Do you see any places for improvements thanks to AR in your life ?
1. How do you see outdoor usage of AR?
ReplyDeleteI think that there are many possibilities of outdoor usage. From entertainment like pokemon go to some apps with navigation, city games with historical events and educational elements etc.
2. What it need to be usable for everyone ?
I don't know if such advanced technologies may be usable for everyone. I think that different usage of AR have different target groups. Some people may do not need it at all, the same as some people do not use smartphones.
3. Do you see any places for improvements thanks to AR in your life ?
If lines on a screen in a car displayed when parking and sound signals can be called AR then yes! Parking seems to be a lot easier with that ;) Honestly, I can't think of any more impressive examples.
Ahh Pokemon Go ;) This is not the true AR that I'm thinking off but your example is 100% correct. Outdoor games are very cool with AR.
DeleteWhy do you think about groups ? What will you say about displaying notifications on your glasses ? It would be much more comfortable than on screen of your phone in my opinion.
There are many uses of AR, a good example is skully helmet:

With high specialization, it is difficult to designate something good for the whole community, but there are many examples dedicated to narrow groups.
1. How do you see outdoor usage of AR ?
ReplyDeleteNavigation would be probably very useful, there is a wide application in fighter jets pilot helmets already, also for fun like Pokemon Go which was mentioned above.
2. What it need to be usable for everyone ?
I think this is niche related technology, maybe one day we will get to the level it will be merge in more complex system but for the moment I think it's niche related.
3. Do you see any places for improvements thanks to AR in your life ?
Surgery I think we can gain alot in medicine altho I think it requires alot of certification and testing but imagine performing surgery having all vital indicators and available informations in front of your eyes.
Thanks,

Augmented Reality mobile applications are beginning to change the way visitors to museums, art galleries and tourist locations see and interact we the new experiences. AR applications too can help travelers locate transportation services. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2uH-jrsSxs or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhLMNGy_PX8
ReplyDeleteOn April 24, 2010 new Media Artist Sander Veenhof organized the first Augmented Reality Flash Mob in Dam Square Amsterdam. The idea is based on the well known "human statue" phenomenon. Most of us have seen these human statues in cities around the world. The AR Flash Mob takes the statue to the next level- a virtual one. Participants needed Layer browser to view the virtual statues in the square- from Spiderman to Darth Vader to the Beatles on Abbey Road. Outsiders viewing the event, saw groups of people pointing cell phones at nothing! 1. How do you see outdoor usage of AR?
ReplyDeleteThere are many examples of the possible usage of Augmented Reality.
Any types of entertainment like games as well as educational facet. Recently, I found SkyMap. Your phone displays a star map while holding your phone up to the sky.
2. What it need to be usable for everyone?
It seems it is reachable for everyone who has a smartphone. Most of the apps seem to be really usable for everybody.
3. Do you see any places for improvements thanks to AR in your life?
Honestly, I am still not thinking in terms of the usage AR in my life. Maybe, a front pane in a car with a navigation may be promising to me. I am not really keen on visiting museums but with AR it seems more interesting.
1. How do you see outdoor usage of AR ?
ReplyDeleteI think the outdoor use of AR is an area where a lot of ideas can come to mind: games, sightseeing, education (e.g. comparisons how the city changed during centuries), navigation. And probably there could be many more ideas.
2. What it need to be usable for everyone ?
Simplicity. Using technology can be difficult for people how do not have contact with it in their everyday life, for seniors or disabled people.
3. Do you see any places for improvements thanks to AR in your life ?
First, what comes to my mind is medicine. AR can be very useful for example during a surgery.
In my personal life I would like to use AR to choose the furniture to my apartment :)
1. How do you see outdoor usage of AR ?
ReplyDeleteAs far I’m concerned the mobile augmented reality can be used in various areas of live. First of all it can help us with navigation and tourism. Undoubtedly, the future belongs to augmented reality.
2. What it need to be usable for everyone ?
In my opinion it is not for everyone, for sure. Let’s think about those who don’t have any mobiles (yes, there are such people). Afterwards let’s note people with old mobiles and finally, let's see those who really do not need it. I’m sure that not everybody will use this technology however I think it might be very popular.
3. Do you see any places for improvements thanks to AR in your life ?
Of course, as I wrote above: navigation and tourism. It can also be really helpful in indoor usage, especially in learning, virtual training or sightseeing.
1. How do you see outdoor usage of AR ?
ReplyDeleteI never sow the Google or other car to capture terrestrial photos but I realized now how useful this technology is. I always wonder how this maps are generated and is becoming simple.
2. What it need to be usable for everyone ?
It is enough usable both for common people or business sociaty.
3. Do you see any places for improvements thanks to AR in your life ?
There are many domains to implement AR in common human life but this technology I didn't study for great amount of time.

ReplyDeleteentertainment like pokemon go or other games
advertisings
and many other
2. What it need to be usable for everyone ?
right AR is rather expensive technology and it is rater gadget than device that is resolving any important problem
3. Do you see any places for improvements thanks to AR in your life ?
Maybe some information service that will be presenting information about places
1. How do you see outdoor usage of AR ?
ReplyDeleteI think that AR is amazingly accurate tool in architecture both inside and outdoor. It might be used to organise outdoor space - decide where to place different furniture, arrange garden - plants, swimming pool and so on. This may be a simple visualization of an existing paper-based project so that the client can better understand the concept.
2. What it need to be usable for everyone ?
I think older generations are still not too eager to use AR. Of course, this is really enough for a cell phone and everyone in theory can benefit from this solution. However, for use in architecture, a larger device is needed. This is also an additional problem for architects who either need to learn new technology or hire someone who knows how to use it.
3. Do you see any places for improvements thanks to AR in your life ?
There are no such things at the moment. Of course there are games or applications, but it's still more fun than having to use it.

ReplyDeleteI am absolutely sure that AR is our future. This is a tendency we cannot stop any more. All we can – and should – do is to plan, create, direct this usage as perfectly, as it is possible. I mean first of all facilities we can have thanks to AR in our everyday life. Apart from that we have to know this technology very well, not to be afraid of it, because someone can try to use it improperly against us and we have to be ready to defend. So we have to be fully conscious of possibilities, the only one way: let AR happen (because it will anyhow) and be open.

Yes, it should be very common for the reasons I mentioned above in point 1. If it is more known, there new procedures, law regulations shall appear very soon (if needed). As a result, we will feel safer, and faster we’ll get used to new reality.

What I desire, is possibility to visit new places from my home. I love travelling and I dream to do it when retired, but at the moment I can afford it twice a year. So I hope to organize such possibilities virtually very soon.
Apart from that it could be useful to use it for fears treatment in our common life. That could especially help children, who wouldn’t have developed little fears into big ones, as sometimes we can observe in our adult life.
I don’t think AR might be usable for all people. I think it is smart solution for some occupations. It would be useful for training in aviation industry. Learning Tower Air Traffic Controllers can be done with AR instead of numerous projectors. According to my knowledge it is used in pilots training already. In general AR could be useful outdoors in occupations that need easy access to databases during work. For example police officers.
