Week 3 - 24.04--30.04.2017 Augmented reality in sport

I want to present a TED talk:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AgMOJC5R4F8

Former NFL players presents his vision how sport can evolve with help of augmented reality. It presents conflict between basic concept of sport and technology in sport. Should we take this route ? There is a big group of people that do not want to put any technological upgrades to the discipline, for example in soccer we still have no option for referee to check the replay. This conflict is true and it is related with big amount of money in background. Let us discuss about this.

1. what do you think about making players "better" using technology ?
2. do you think that this is a good idea ?
3. where is the limit of technology in sport like football

  1. I think that technology can help players develop and strengthen their abilities and indvidual skills. For instance football players, who already wear visors, when playing, could have real time data streamed to their visors such as the position of other players, the incoming speed of the ball, and the time left in the match. Such pieces of information might positively influence their performance. I think that using technology to make people better in paricuar sports is not a bad idea, nevertheless I wouldn't go that far so as to move all kinds of sport activities into virtual reality. Watching a viral match at home with Google glasses on will never be the same as participating in a real match on a real stadium. Even the best of electronic devices won't ever outbalance real experience. At least this is my opinion.

    1. There is always a question where is the limit. I don't think that special alghoritm should show the player how he should pass the ball :)

  2. David many thanks for several very interesting articles. I love technology topics and all about VR and AR make me crazy. We used to read about AR in our English lessons but in my opinion such an interesting topic can return more often. Generally I am person who enjoys all technology news and I think AR is a very useful technology in a lot of our life disciplines as logistic, maintenance, delivery and many, many others. But In my opinion to bring that level of technology and immersion would surely ruin sport. To have something beep or flash up to tell an athlete where to run, or what to do next would render intuition, awareness and genuine talent redundant. When AR will be allowed in sport it will be definitely the end of this entertainment. The results of the matches or other activity will not be dependent on human’s body but electronic gadgets and the money of the club.. I recommend strongly to avoid AR during any sports activity. In relation to football I hope electronic devices will allow to skip typical arbiters mistakes. In my opinion electronic gadgets should be allowed to be used during matches or other activities only to track credibility and honesty in sport.

    1. Exactly. The technology should be focused on helping everybody on the side. It should prevent referee mistakes that often can change the result. If we will focus on that, than the result of a match, race or fight etc. will be based only on the skills of players. It will make the sport better :)

  3. Hello,
Thanks for the movie I had a chance to take a look at the new Scoda Octavia commercial;), but let's go back to the main movie. AR is something completely new for me. As I know it is confused by other people with VR (Virtual Reality) very often. I have to underline funny behaviour of a man in the virtual rollercoaster. He was the main star at this presentation.

I am an advocate of using technology in the validation of results (in football VAR Video Assistant Referees is crucial because now the game speed is too fast for a referee). In my opinion technology, which supports people should be only available in motor sports (where not only players are in competition but whole technical teams. For sure there is no problem if the technology supports people during their training but any technology that is used during the competition should be treated as a prohibited doping.

Please take a look on cycling, where teams are using small engines that support riders. It is unfair and very similar to doping that is why sport environment is tracking this kind of abuses. Technology in football is present even in polish Ekstraklasa: drones during training sessions, GPS under the player's shirt tracking its motion…. But it helps in analysis and optimisation of behaviours after the game or during the break, when coach can be supported by results of this analysis.

    1. I think VAR is very important because it minimize mistakes that are made and prevents situation in which a mistake changes the result. But here we are talking about helping players. In my opinion the game should be based on skills and instinct of each player, not on commands that they are getting in real time. Even in Formula 1 new rules are doing more and more to leave the drivers on their own

  4. Thank you for the interesting movie, however I am skeptical to use the technology by sprinters. In my opinion technology should be used by referes. Introducing new technologies on the competitor side will reduce the credibility of the sport.

I am a AR fan. I think that this technology will be useful in many areas. I give links to two films. I believe that such technology will be available and used in the near future

Microsoft HoloLens & Evena Medical Eyes

  5. Thanks for sharing this video.
I think we have got excited about the technology which is actually for the first time in our reach but we don't have in depth studies what impact it makes on humans.
    1) I don't think it makes players better, in the situation where action is very quick every additional information to what players got used to make them more distract. Perfect examples are pilots, when we weren't using extensively augumented technology there were less incidents because of lack of focus on the current situation, the same thing with drivers. So I don't think this technology makes players better. They think it will make players better but there is no scientific proof humans can handle additional information and take proper action base on this information in fast changing environment.
    2) As in point 1) I do think we should do extensive research on what is the impact on human cognition before we will put it in wider use
    3) Limit is straight on the beginning just because technology is in our reach it doesn't mean it makes any good.

    Thanks,

  6. 1. what do you think about making players "better" using technology ?
It's an old concept of improving humans. Furthermore, it's hard to find the border of improvement. Is augmentation acceptable? Or let's say eagle eye like in tennis. Can we use implants or something? Tough question.
    2. do you think that this is a good idea ?
Improving sport for viewers and in the same time avoiding players augmentation would be the best way. However, people tend to bend rules. I'm afraid we will see that in the nearest future.
    3. where is the limit of technology in sport like football
Like I've already stated. Sky is the limit. Viewers acceptance is the real limit, and we constantly need more and better. We can only blame ourselves if something will go wrong.

  7. 1. what do you think about making players "better" using technology ?

I like the idea of watching the game in VR, but I am a bit sceptic about "improving" players with AR. I don't know if I like the idea, that a player will get the infromation where and how should he throw the ball. Maybe the match will be more dynamic, but I feel that something important, as unpredictability and spontaneity, will be lost.

    2. do you think that this is a good idea ?

As I already mentioned, I have mixed feelings. Personally, I would like not to equip players with AR devices.

    3. where is the limit of technology in sport like football

    Probably nobody knows :)

  8. 1. What do you think about making players "better" using technology?
In my point of view it should be restricted. It seems to be moving towards the cyborg sport. As for me it is just a kind of doping. However, as the speaker says, it is a big money for the sports business.

    2. Do you think that this is a good idea?
It depends on the point of view. For making money it is a great idea but for competition it is a big threat. We cannot focus only on improving the reach of sports but we ought to consider the basics and rules of the competition.

    3. Where is the limit of technology in sport like football?
I think that the limit is there where we are dealing more with cyborgs than with humans. I’m not a football fan, albeit in my point of view this competition is based on such players abilities as: tactics, technique and teamwork. Where will such solutions as augmented reality lead us? They will certainly develop our empathy, but how about our imagination…?

  9. 1. what do you think about making players "better" using technology?
This is rather philosophic question. What is sport these days? Way of recreation in free time or maybe large industry with continuous growth mindset and
tight financial goals like every industry. If we consider sport as an industry there is nothing bad about presented ideas.
    2. do you think that this is a good idea ?
Once again it depends if we are considering this as an entertainment industry this is great idea.
    3. where is the limit of technology in sport like football
'Sky is the limit' in my opinion best describes current situation in this industry

  10. 1. what do you think about making players "better" using technology ?

Well Google Glasses are some kind of history, they never been sold to anyone else then developers, it seems that it was just huge disappointment for many people, so they just forgot about it. I used them myself so I know how they works and it is hard to believe that players can get better thanks to it. It is very uncomfortable even in very short usage. If You ask in general, I think that is another natural step in development also in sport.

    2. do you think that this is a good idea ?

I think it is a good idea, as in any other field people look for ways to improvement so technology is very important. For sure it can’t be applied in every sport, but I think that learning tactics or some special moves or tricks might be learnt this way.

    3. where is the limit of technology in sport like football

It is hard to say, if I knew I would be probably very very rich right now :)

In my opinion, players should not be treated exceptionally. We live in technological times and many professions were made to use modern solutions very quickly – like doctors or lawyers (par example working as notaries), who had to get used to prepare information to central registers in everyday worktime, online. As a result, we have as actual and true data in central systems, as it is possible. And after all, the true data are the main advantage we can achieve making players to use technology “better”. We should be interested in justice in sport, otherwise we cannot require honesty neither here in sport, nor anywhere else – from doctors, notaries etc.

This is definitely a good idea. This is natural usage and I do not accept such conservative thinking concerning “no replay” etc. This sport, like all other disciplines of our life, should go further, helping and inspiring us.

For me there is no limit, if we respect the base rules – eleven human players and two gates. The technology should be helpful with all organizing, recording and broadcasting aspects of matches.

  12. I think there should be no limits in introducing new technologies in sports. The most important is good fun for fans. The basic issue is ensuring equal rules for all players. In some disciplines we observe results of work that not only sportsman needs to do, but also all members of his team. For example in cycling it is really competition between pharmaceutical companies not only athletes.

Finally I don’t see contradictions of creation two separated leagues with and without augumented reality. Personally I love playing sports , but I’ve never watch it.
