Week 4 [28.11-4.12.2016] - Towards a smart grid Communication

The Smart Grid, generally referred to as the next-generation power system, is considered as a revolutionary and evolutionary regime of existing power grids. More importantly, with the integration of advanced computing and communication technologies, the Smart Grid is expected to greatly enhance efficiency and reliability of future power systems with renewable energy resources, as well as distributed intelligence and demand response.
Our current electric grid was built in the 1890s and improved upon as technology advanced through each decade. Today, it consists of more than 9,200 electric generating units with more than 1 million megawatts of generating capacity connected to more than 300,000 miles of transmission lines. Although the electric grid is considered an engineering marvel, we are stretching its patchwork nature to its capacity. To move forward, people need a new kind of electric grid, one that is built from the bottom up to handle the groundswell of digital and computerized equipment and technology dependent on it—and one that can automate and manage the increasing complexity and needs of electricity in the 21st Century.
The digital technology that allows for two-way communication between the utility and its customers, and the sensing along the transmission lines is what makes the grid smart. Like the Internet, the Smart Grid will consist of controls, computers, automation, and new technologies and equipment working together, but in this case, these technologies will work with the electrical grid to respond digitally to our quickly changing electric demand.

  1. 1. Do you like such kind of technology? Do you think it is needed or rather useless?

Well my first impression is that it is useless. I know that it is kind of renewable energy, it might be good for environment and in long term lower costs of energy, but it requires changes in whole infrastructure of electricity and that is huge cost.

    2. Do you plan to use smart grid technology in your house if it is accessible? Will you use it if you for example have to pay some extra money?

For this moment I don’t have such plans even if it was accessible. I heard that the major problems are with cyberattacks. And also it is based on informatics system, so it may have problems and supply of energy might be problematic in case of errors of problems with software. Maybe in the future when it will be 100% tested, sure and accessible I will consider using it.

    3. Which other areas do you like to control in your house via network?

I would like to control everything in my house via network. Especially as IT specialist I love using technology in all possible areas of life. I would like to control all machines like laundry, refrigerator, oven, lighting, security (cameras), sound system, heating and many many more.

    1. Cezary-it may seem to be useless for you at the moment but I think we all will find it more convincing when it has got more functions.I am also keen on using all the devices via network

  2. 1. Do you like such kind of technology? I like the concept of smart grid communication. I feel that to some extent it is already present in our lives (please see the thread on health monitoring). Do you think it is needed or rather useless? Personally, I find it useful, but this is the point of view of techno fan. I can imagine the contradicting voices as well. I think that world is moving towards the implementation of next generation of Internet – IoT, which on one hand will improve our lives in terms of communication of various things with each other (saving time, money etc.) and on the other hand will change the world in which we grown up, possibly the way people communicate with each other…

    2. Do you plan to use smart grid technology in your house if it is accessible? Yes. I have no constraints except budget ones. Will you use it if you for example must pay some extra money? As mentioned earlier everything is a matter of cost to return ratio. If this ratio would be on the sensible level, I see no reason why to refrain from development.

    3. Which other areas do you like to control in your house via network?
Running water. If for instance I leave the home with running water, I would love to have the opportunity to stop that remotely. Similar control I would like to have over the iron. If I left it hot, I would like to have the possibility to turn that off from distance.

  3. 1. Do you like such kind of technology? Do you think it is needed or rather useless?
Yes, I like it much. In my opinion it is a necessity because of energy shortage. With Smart Grid we can use the renewable energy better. Moreover Home Area Network is a great possibility to transform our houses into smart homes.

    2. Do you plan to use smart grid technology in your house if it is accessible? Will you use it if you for example have to pay some extra money?
Yes, I would like to use smart grid technology in my home even if it would be an extra charge. I see many advantages of this technology: more thoughtful and conscious usage of energy, convenience, money saving and environmental awareness.

    3. Which other areas do you like to control in your house via network?
I would like to control everything what is possible: central heating, water consumption, usage of the energy, household appliances – especially fridge and oven. Only one area I would like to exclude: everything connected with my privacy. So for example I wouldn’t like to have implemented the inside-home monitoring.

  4. 1. Do you like such kind of technology? Do you think it is needed or rather useless?
Of course. If it gives us possibility to use renewable energy it's even better. Like with every new invention, some people think it's useless, some thinks it is useful. It really depends, I would like to give it a try.
    2. Do you plan to use smart grid technology in your house if it is accessible? Will you use it if you for example have to pay some extra money?
Yes, why not? If the price is right, we will see. Can you predict the price difference?
    3. Which other areas do you like to control in your house via network?
Everything, lights, windows, general security. In the nearest future my fridge, washing machine, tv and music :)

  5. Couple of years ago I was researching evolutionary algorithms and I came across Smart Grids. One of energy companies was implementing evolutionary algorithm to predict energy usage and optimize production. I think that it's quite useful but in my opinion it should be deployed mainly in large office buildings and blocks rather than in single houses or apartments.
I have strict "deny all" rule on all incoming traffic on my router and no DMZ so I do not control stuff via network at home.

    1. Mikołaj-I agree maybe the system should start at first in office buildings and blocks of flats but it may pass on private enterprises as well after some time-let's hope

  6. Hi, thanks for suggesting this article. I am of the opinion that there is sadly not enough money to put into a total replacement of the actual state of the worlds grid infrastructure. Newer towns, buildings and facilities possess elements that are state of the art. Sometimes there are also projects for replacement of old ones, but as already mentioned costs are a limit so governments and energy providers need to chose. Also in a couple of years new technology might arrive hence rendering a total rebuild a total waste. I am not sure whether this is the best approach. As long as the new technology will provide benefits that I feel I would totally need in my life, then I am open to the idea of paying more to obtain it. However I am pretty reluctant to change to whatever is offered nowadays. I'll wait and see for what the future brings.

  7. 1. Do you like such kind of technology? Do you think it is needed or rather useless?

My personal preferences have no impact on the technology. I neither like nor dislike smart grid.
And probably I know too little to judge usefulness of this technology.
It may happen that growing demand on electricity (electric cars, anyone?) will force us to use smart grid, so whether it is mature enough or not does not really matter.

    2. Do you plan to use smart grid technology in your house if it is accessible? Will you use it if you for example have to pay some extra money?

The short answer is I don't know. I thought about installing solar panels on my parent's house roof, together with battery pack. It would be coupled with existing grid, so I guess it would be some kind of smart grid.
Personally I am leaning towards self sufficiency and energy saving. I guess that means I would like to be early adopter should smart grid technology be available at reasonable price.

    3. Which other areas do you like to control in your house via network?

You mean over the Internet? I guess almost everything; every single power socket and lighting system, heating, etc. However, I am a bit worried about security of such controls.

  8. 1.Do you like such kind of technology? Do you think it is needed or rather useless?

I think that in near future smart grid will be a critical foundation for the incorporation of renewable energy into the electrical grid. Since renewable sources like solar and wind are variable, it will be critical to have a demand-responsive electrical grid that uses energy efficiently.
In near future Plug-in hybrid electric cars will also require a smart grid to allow consumers to charge their vehicles when rates are low.

    2. Do you plan to use smart grid technology in your house if it is accessible? Will you use it if you for example have to pay some extra money?

While toking about smart grid we usually focus on electricity only, we also capture the possible interaction between the electric and thermal appliances , and this increases the flexibility potential. Smart grid makes me possible to monitor and adjust my energy use through smart meters and home energy management systems that offer 24/7 rate and usage readings. That means no surprises on my electric bill and even better, I can schedule my most energy-intensive tasks for low-demand periods when I pay less. When such solutions become widely available I would like to use them.

    3. Which other areas do you like to control in your house via network?

I would like to control my heating system and be able to adjust temperature remotely in my house.

  9. 1. Do you like such kind of technology? Do you think it is needed or rather useless?

I like this technology mainly because of its focus on renewable energy and power saving. We use much energy nowadays, so every solution to limit the use of it is valuable. I also have few concerns about smart grid. First is the cost of its implementation. I think that implementing it as kind of a standard may cost a lot. The second concern regards the complexity of the solution, the more complicated it is, the more failures can cause.

    2. Do you plan to use smart grid technology in your house if it is accessible? Will you use it if you for example have to pay some extra money?

In my current flat, not really. I Think it is just a bit too small for such advanced technology, but in my future house yes :)

    3. Which other areas do you like to control in your house via network?

I didn't think about it that much. Probably the temperature control and everything that will effect in decrease of energy consumption.

  10. 1. Do you like such kind of technology? Do you think it is needed or rather useless?
Thinking about it idealistically it does seem like a good idea. It could be useful, we depend on energy all the time and if Smart Grid enables people to use it more efficiently, then why not? Of course like with every innovation there may be problems with implementing the technology, but that doesn't change the fact that the idea is quite interesting.

    2. Do you plan to use smart grid technology in your house if it is accessible? Will you use it if you for example have to pay some extra money?
I wouldn't mind using it once it's a standard, but since it requires significant modernization of currently existing power network I don't think it's worth it at this point.

    3. Which other areas do you like to control in your house via network?
Just like others mentioned it would be great to be able to control everything that may cause damage if left on. Gas-fittings, running water, iron and so on. If you could check and turn on/off such things remotely it would be absolutely amazing and would spare me a lot of stress sometimes.

I think that would be great to change our todays electrical grids are quite old so I would be nice to have something similar to this smart grids.
Everything that would give cleaner cheaper energy is welcome, especially in Poland where our grids are in not very good shape.

    2. Do you plan to use smart grid technology in your house if it is accessible? Will you use it if you for example have to pay some extra money?
If I can get internet access with this kind of invention then why not.

    3. Which other areas do you like to control in your house via network?
I must say that I didn't realise of it but I still contrtol heat in my home so I would likde to control this via network. Maybe this kind of technology would gicve chance to do some optimisation of heating in rooms in house.

In current state, when energy consumption is growing year over year and the demand is higher every season. Smart grids are one of the options that can minimize blackouts probability, grid malfunctions energy shortage, etc. When we will be able to monitor energy usage maybe it will be possible to forecast probability of errors and mitigation of risks will be much easier and cheaper.
Do you plan to use smart grid technology in your house if it is accessible? Will you use it if you for example have to pay some extra money?
As far as I know smart meters and smart grid will be mandatory in not so distant future so we will do not have any options. In its concept smart grid solutions should minimize payments and maximize availability.
Which other areas do you like to control in your house via network?
Smart metering in any other utilities business (natural gas, water, water disposal, etc)
    Security and surveillance
    Health monitoring
    IoT devices
    Medial solutions

As I wrote before ... new technology has to give me something extra Especially if I have to pay extra money.

In the house I do not control a lot of things (my wife does :) ) but in a company I can manage devices like servers, production machines and software services.

  14. 1. Do you like such kind of technology? Do you think it is needed or rather useless?
I think that there is a not of a evolution or even a revolution. The times go by and this solution seems to be a quite good idea. The stress is put on the renewable technology which is an ideal adjustment to the current conditions. We, as the society, need to be more responsible about it.
    2. Do you plan to use smart grid technology in your house if it is accessible? Will you use it if you for example have to pay some extra money?
If it is accessible I will use it in my house. If I see in it the desired outputs I would invest my money in such solutions. I think it will become a standard someday.
    3. Which other areas do you like to control in your house via network?
I would like to regulate the heating system via network. Analysis of the temperature in rooms seems to be a great idea. Security, lightening system and any other small devices. If it brings an optimization I will have it someday.

  15. 1.In my opinion, solutions of this type are needed if we want to develop energy generation from alternative sources. The use of renewable energy significantly changes system network - with a few traditional suppliers and many customers on a modern multiple suppliers and multiple recipients, moreover, alternative energy sources are variable in output which must be complemented by the traditional suppliers in order to provide suitable and constant power for customers. The ideal solution would be make the system steer traditional energy sources to complement production to current demand into account the current performance of alternative suppliers.
    2. So obviously, if the price would not have been too high. I have nothing against that Internet technologies to pilot charging time of my devices tailored to the smallest network load - of course energy suppliers should also make the price of this. The current system hour is already obsolete the proposed solutions are more efficient.
3.I would like to control everything, but most are issues of security, monitoring, motion sensors, water supply, gas and cut off from power the identified socket.

  16. 1. Do you like such kind of technology? Do you think it is needed or rather useless?

I think it is needed if it can optimize power consumption. But the cost of implementing entirely new infrastructure would be enormous, so we have to answer the qestion - would it give us sufficient benefits? I mean, not us, here and now, but propably next generations.

    2. Do you plan to use smart grid technology in your house if it is accessible? Will you use it if you for example have to pay some extra money?
Again, I'd have to calculate it. If I'd have a benefit in 10 years, for example, than yes, I would pay extra money to build such a grid for private usage.

    3. Which other areas do you like to control in your house via network?
