Hello everyone,
For the survival in a rapidly changing reality around us is following the pace of these changes. This challenge has interdisciplinary dimension, good examples of areas that do not escape to changes in the science and education. It is very important that the implementation of innovative solutions for teaching is not indifferent to our adaptation abilities to today's world. Nowadays, we have unlimited access to knowledge, therefore, the mere possession of knowledge begins to play a smaller role, important becomes ability to apply it.
Read a short article and answer in the questions:
1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of learning academic transformation?
2. What is your opinion about the Polish academic learning / teaching?
3. What changes would you propose in Polish academic learning / teaching?
The article you posted is in my opinion a set of ambiguous "best practices" with no actual tips on how to improve education process or how to improve management in educational institutions. In consists of obvious keywords as: communication, teamwork, technology, cross-functional. Typical content for high-level management presentation (bullshit bingo stuff - http://www.bullshitbingo.net/cards/bullshit/).
ReplyDeleteI think that Polish public universities struggle with incoherent legislation and a lot of bureaucracy, that holds them from investing in new technologies and creating new labs. Meanwhile non-public, tuition-dependent institutions struggle with growing competition and students "I pay therefore I am" attitude.
Wiesiek thanks for your article. Double thanks because it was a short article But seriously you touched (again in our English course) very important problems about education. Every smart human knows that our education decides about our future. Our world is still changing therefore our education must change to pace of these changes. Nobody can predict in which way this educational changes should undergo. In my opinion in Poland, I don’t know why but every decade the Government reduces the education level on every level on a regular basis.. This is madness because in modern world in our country we stop teaching our children and teenagers maths, IT, to programme. Instead we promote history, religion etc. I reckon this activities prepare dump voters easy to manipulate. We should stop right now and increase pressure to teach science and biology. If we don’t improve our education level we will lose in comparison with countries such as China, India, Korea etc. on each stage of technology.
ReplyDelete1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of learning academic transformation?
ReplyDeleteLearning or leading? Honestly, I can't answer your question. I don't have a clue what the article you'd like us to read is all about. That's because I can't see any point. Well, maybe it's just me.
2. What is your opinion about the Polish academic learning / teaching?
My opinion is, I am not qualified to judge Polish teaching. I am not a teacher and frankly I don't even know the first thing about teaching at any level, especially the academic one.
As far as learning is concerned, I guess I am not a role model too. I am learning by myself and so far what PJAIT is doing is more of an obstacle than help...
3. What changes would you propose in Polish academic learning / teaching?
Unfortunately, I already gave you my answers above. I am not qualified to judge the proper way of teaching or learning.
1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of learning academic transformation?
ReplyDeleteAdvantages of learning academic transformation are that higher education will give students higher quality skills. They will be prepared to fit to their jobs not only using their knowledge to pass universities. Disadvantages are that there will be a lot of troubles in adapting to changes for universities and other institutions.
2. What is your opinion about the Polish academic learning / teaching?
I think Polish academic teaching is at quite good level comparing to the rest of the world. We put big pressure on quality of knowledge and information but unfortunately we do not have enough focus on use of this knowledge. Of course we can still learn a lot from other countries.
3. What changes would you propose in Polish academic learning / teaching?
Polish academic learning would benefit from teaching students practical uses of the knowledge they gain. There should be more individual projects where students have opportunity to connect knowledge with their interests and where they can be creative.

ReplyDeleteThank you for your response. Do you think that science has become too common? Lacks many craftsmen and the majority of young people going to high school, later have problems with the sentence final exams, later go to the college, universities often have problems with the demographic low, transfer who accept anyone who will go to them. In my opinion, the state should reactivate the training, it will raise the level of secondary schools, which will reduce the number of students at the same time raise their level. At the same time you have to remember about the lack of well-trained workers, plumbers, locksmiths, mechanics, etc ... The solution also raised to the level of education and academic learning.
ReplyDeleteWiesiek, thank you for this article. I think that a discussion about academic transformation is needed, in general. Of course, there may be distinguished many pros and cons of learning academic transformation. The desired effect is an improvement of students' skills, however, when it is accomplished poorly money as well as time are wasted. It is hard for me to say anything about polish academic learning/teaching because I unfortunately have no comparison. I haven't participated in transformation process, too. However, there are many polish students/graduates who work in their profession abroad so I think that we perform well. Polish academic learning / teaching will probably benefit from the experiences from the other countries if the initiators properly define the short- and long- term purposes.
ReplyDelete1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of learning academic transformation?
ReplyDeleteHigher education gives you higher skills - I don't think so, I think that unveristies should gives everything students need. In the beggining they should deliver some basics for later work but after some time they should prepare us for real work not another imaginery work that every thing works in perfect, hermetic enviroment.
Todays higher eduction does not guarantee job in the same field that you were studying and it is in all fields of higher education paths.
2. What is your opinion about the Polish academic learning /teaching?
I don't have very good opinion about (some context you can get from answer above).
I think that universities should prepare us for very specific fields (eg low-level programming) and high schools should prepare us to handle everyday tasks.
3. What changes would you propose in Polish academic learning / teaching?
More practical stuff and less theoretical subjects. School should give us impuls for searching answers and pursuing hungry of knowledge by giving us more practical stuff to work on.
You're right Tomek, currently only in a narrow field man can be a good specialist. But universities also have to learn how to learn - in the future, individually...
DeleteThank you Kasia for your comment, I agree with you that it should be determined both current and long-term trends. However, little is unfortunate that the next government seldom able to use the acquis their predecessors. Rather than fix bugs, build everything from the beginning with other errors. It is a bad practice, which prevents high development of many areas ...
ReplyDelete1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of learning academic transformation?
ReplyDeleteI think that when most people talk about ‘academic transformation’, they are thinking of tectonic shifts in the academic landscape – the kinds of things that people will talk about for decades to come. The reality is that what you’re going to find are actions that are much smaller, albeit perhaps more meaningful in the long run. Think of evolution rather than revolution, or transition rather than disruption. If you read enough articles or case studies on academic transformation, it’s very easy to get a sense that institutions simply select a process, think about it, and then transform it perfectly on their first try. That is almost certainly not the case. Transformation is some time messy, it doesn’t always work, and at the end you may end up disoriented and confused.
2. What is your opinion about the Polish academic learning / teaching?
I am not the academic teacher jet. I have a little experience in academic teaching so I am a last person to judge.
3. What changes would you propose in Polish academic learning / teaching?
I presented my answers above. I am to inexperience to judge.
Thank you for your response, I agree that evolution always bring more than revolutions.

ReplyDelete1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of learning academic transformation?
Advantages are that there will be some sort of change from what is going on right know. Students will be more prepared for dealing with real life and work obstacles. Disadvantages will be more accurate for administration that will have to figure out how to do it.
2. What is your opinion about the Polish academic learning / teaching?
From my experience I am very happy about choosing private school, because public Polish schools (universities) are ridiculous. In private schools we have more opportunities, we have smaller groups for tutorials and teachers can pay more attention for every student. Of course there is a lot that should be changed - more business classes, we should be taught how to create our own companies or how to successfully sell our products. We should have opportunity on choosing some subjects and to work more in real companies. There is too much to theory and not enough of practise.
3. What changes would you propose in Polish academic learning / teaching?
As I said in previous question I would definitely do something that is already present among Universities in Scandinavian countries - one semester is free from subjects and you work full time in real company - and the company gives you grade for how you were working. I think that this would gave people experience and something to write in CV and students will have much bigger knowledge.
Thanks for your comment, and more often speak at our universities by the Scandinavian model, and the connection between science and business. Of course, as usual routine problem are the details ...
Delete1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of learning academic transformation?
ReplyDeleteWell, the fact is that it is claimed that universities should prepare students for entering the market and that is what learning academic transformation is all about. The main advantage of this change in theory should be that students will be better qualified and will acquire skills that will enable them to meet future employers' requirements. Why in theory? Because in order to obtain such results, universities would have to cooperate with all employers from particular branches and fields of science and that is not possible. The main disadvantage of learning academic transformation might be that universities will become just another sort of vocational school. The main purpose of universities was to open people's minds for all kind of knowledge so that they seek to broaden their horizons throughout the rest of their life. They were not supposed to be treated like vocational schools and we should bear that in mind.
2. What is your opinion about the Polish academic learning / teaching?
In my opinion we definitely underestimate the level of Polish academic learning/teaching. Polish people abroad are thought to be best qualified workers. They have broad knowledge of their fields of expertise, they are fast learners and adapt easily to changing circumstances. Of course, not all universities help their students develop their skills and deppen their knowledge, but all in all, Polish educational system is in better shape than we think.
3. What changes would you propose in Polish academic learning / teaching?
I would definitely limit the number of exams ending with tests. I don't think that test solving skills are of any use for students and future employees. We should not follow the example of the U.S. In the U.S. educational system aims at raising dummies, easily controlled people with limited knowledge of the world, good workers who are experts in one particular field. I really do hope that we will wake up and do something before such thing happens in Poland.

DeleteThanks for the reply, I consider that the tests are not a good solution. In my opinion the best is to talk face to face - student and Professors. But now with this little problems - for example a justification the assessment during verification of learning outcomes
Delete1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of learning academic transformation?
ReplyDeleteBiggest advantage of academic transformation is that there is greater availability of online academic courses. For example Stanford, Berkeley and MiT have made available to a wider audience their lectures and courses. At the same time when technology is disrupting world narrow expertise knowledge is getting more and more expensive and harder to obtain by poorer part of society.
2. What is your opinion about the Polish academic learning / teaching?
From my perspective Polish academic learning / teaching from the one side is highly focused on giving students as much knowledge as it is possible. But on the other hand most of shared knowledge is strictly theoretical and we are lacking of practical skills that can be used during professional life.
3. What changes would you propose in Polish academic learning / teaching?
I think polish educational institutions should put more effort for wider and deeper cooperation with businesses and listening to the demand side of job market.
Thanks for your comment - I agree with you...
DeleteHey, thanks for your article recommendation. After having a look at it, I'll try to provide answers to your questions:
ReplyDelete1. I assume you meant to use the word "leading" instead of "learning", since it makes more sense in the context of the article, correct me however if it was intended. I think that the advantages are that students will get the skills that they need when they get employed and also the organisations that employ fresh students won't to put much effort in their additional training.
2. It surely has its flaws, however it depends on what path the students chose next in their life, most academic programmes prepare students to be able to i.e. continue a scientific course of career while others apply more focus on the practical things and try to prepare them for corporation style positions.
3. It would be a great idea to combine internships together with lab exercises so that the students get a feeling of what they should be prepared for.
Thanks, unfortunately, or learn in a very broad areas and generally or in a very a narrow domain at a very high level. One and the other way has its supporters and opponents...
Delete1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of learning academic transformation?
ReplyDeleteThere are few advantages of learning academic transformation but only for governance structures of universities because - in my point of view – learners shouldn’t be concerned by such information. Academic transformation process is always really needed because of its benefits for education. Thus the advantages for sure are:
- better prepared students to their potential jobs and stakeholder expectations,
- focusing on student’s needs
- rethinking of academic development and technology.
2. What is your opinion about the Polish academic learning / teaching?
In my opinion it depends on specific academy. Teaching standards aren’t so focused on effects but on rules and processes. So sometimes students meet teaching because of education requirements and such type of learning doesn’t give any results. It is hard to give a general opinion about academic teaching – it should be narrowed to one institution. In my education career I met really divergent modes of teaching…
3. What changes would you propose in Polish academic learning / teaching?
First of all academic education should be a kind of partnered leadership. Lecturers should be preceptors for their students. Moreover they should have lessons in smaller groups. Only in this way they can better understand student’s needs and suit education process to specific learner. Some universities are also tuition-focused because of their poor financial situation. To my mind it is unacceptable on education ground but it is rather a political problem than academic.
Yes, unfortunately, not everyone understands that science should be the area equipped with the latest tools to teach students to technology on which in the future will work and not on what worked 10 years ago.
Delete1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of learning academic transformation?
ReplyDeletePersonally, a twist in educating people. Nowadays, even though we are leaving in so called 21th century we are still mostly using old techniques. So, I'm looking forward with a lot of hope.
2. What is your opinion about the Polish academic learning / teaching?
We are behind. Especially, if we take a look at western universities. However, our students are still one of the best in the world. Especially in IT.
3. What changes would you propose in Polish academic learning / teaching?
We should start using modern technologies, augmented reality and so on. I know, it's still in early phase, but let's try something new. Instead of using same methods. Let studens choose their lectures and so on. Be more creative.
Thanks, and more often I see the trend moving more activity on the site students, in my opinion universities instead of checking "knowledge" should check the ability to apply this knowledge today, access to knowledge is unlimited, graduates must be able to use it only.

ReplyDelete1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of learning academic transformation?
In my opinion the biggest advantage is the availability of the education. Many courses or even faculties are conducted with the use of internet, so we can study at the distant university, actually being at home. Also new technologies are closer to young people (who usually students are).
2. What is your opinion about the Polish academic learning / teaching?
Generally I think that Polish academic teaching is not that bad as it is usually described. The university curriculum is broad and interesting (at least in technical universities), but often without enough practice.
3. What changes would you propose in Polish academic learning / teaching?
Maybe to teach students how to use their knowledge in practice, organize more excercises and projects.
Thanks for your comment, I think so too
