Week 3 [23-29.11.2020] Industry 4.0

Industry 4.0 refers to a new phase in the Industrial Revolution that focuses heavily on interconnectivity, automation, machine learning, and real-time data. Industry 4.0, also sometimes referred to as IIoT or smart manufacturing, marries physical production and operations with smart digital technology, machine learning, and big data to create a more holistic and better connected ecosystem for companies that focus on manufacturing and supply chain management. While every company and organization operating today is different, they all face a common challenge—the need for connectedness and access to real-time insights across processes, partners, products, and people.

Please read the articles available here:and answer the following questions.
  1. What is the fourth industrial revolution for you?
  2. What do you think about science supporting business and vice versa? Can one not function without the other?
  3. How do you perceive the development of industry 4.0 in Poland?

  1. 1. What is the fourth industrial revolution for you?

The fourth industrial revolution is happening before our very eyes. It’s natural thing that people are seeking for optimization and efficiency. I have the pleasure to get involved personally in this change. Working as a data scientist I was part of a project witch goal was to digitalize ours company’s factories. It was a great pleasure to see how the data from more than 3000 sensors (form just one factory) running through internet to a cloud. Then I build an algorithm for anomaly detection happening on a factory line. Based on Machine Learning approach I done analysis that helps improved product quality and gave real time view on it. Moreover I done life time prediction for machines parts to omit unplanned production stops due to failures. Also the data was used for visualization reports for management team that they could drove theirs decision based on data. All of this action brought big benefits to the company mainly because efficiency rise.

    2. What do you think about science supporting business and vice versa? Can one not function without the other?

Definitely one can’t function without the other. Science innovation often arise as an answer to business needs. For example first Industry Revolution start with steam-powered engines invention. The other side of this mutual cooperation is funding provided by business, not only based on philanthropy but rather by the goal of future profits.

    3. How do you perceive the development of industry 4.0 in Poland?

We are still at the beginning of this road. A lot of production processes changed, they involve more and more computers or robotic in them, but the IoT solutions are not widely incorporated. But the transformation is a process, you can’t start building IoT services while you don’t have appropriate industrial internet. You have to start somewhere and evolve step by step with every improvement.

    1. Thank you very much for your answer. In fact, industry 4.0 contributes to the acceleration of data collection, analysis and drawing the most accurate conclusions. I am glad that you shared information about your work in your company and the application of Industry 4.0 strategy. As you have noticed, building services without an appropriate industrial internet is very difficult and instead of encouraging the development of this branch, it may slow it down or even stop it in a given enterprise.

  2. 1. The fourth industrial revolution has been visible for many years in many industries. More and more companies are switching to cloud-based architectures, virtual meetings, employing a team of IT specialists to create new work support systems. This revolution is clearly visible, for example, in the technical industry, where more and more elements are created with the use of CNC machine tools, instead of traditional milling machines and lathes. The entire production chain is linked with suppliers and recipients of goods, without downtime, all thanks to a single system in which every activity can be recorded immediately in every factory located anywhere in the world. I also notice the fourth industrial revolution from the accounting side of my mother at work, more and more invoices are issued electronically, without printing tons of pages a day. Company branches are scattered all over the world, but communication is easy thanks to several huge systems for locating the bills. A person from Bulgaria can approve in a few seconds something that a person in Poland has done. The global digitization and use of information systems in every area of life is truly remarkable, and I think we are now delighted with the image of the world as people were delighted with the improvement of their work thanks to steam machines.
    2. There is a reason why it is often said that conflict drives science and the economy. Always behind every great achievement of mankind and every milestone were visionaries who strove to implement their ideas. So I believe that science and business cannot function without each other. This is best seen in the medical industry. Without research funding, we wouldn't have drugs, and without drug researchers, companies wouldn't be able to make money on them. In order for something to be useful and safe for people, appropriate specialists should always work on it. Unfortunately, scientists are not marketers, so they will not advertise their achievements to a wider group of people.
    3. I think that many companies are slowly starting to focus on industry 4.0, but there is still a long way to go. As mentioned in the article, industry 4.0 is based on IoT, machine learning, cloud computing, etc. I think there are only few companies in Poland that use these things. In addition, the problem with the development of industry 4.0 in our country may be the fact that the government imposes a lot of bureaucracy in the activities of companies, which, unfortunately, cannot always be improved with technology. Many detailed regulations that entrepreneurs must adhere to reduces the creativity and ingenuity of innovative implementations.

    1. Thank you very much for your answer. It's nice that you noticed the fourth industrial revolution in accounting, because it is very much needed there. We are slowly entering the zone where services are moving to the network and it is currently the largest market. Conducting research on the example of pharmaceutical companies without business support would be definitely difficult, and in many cases even impossible. Referring to our legal system, actually developing an electronic equivalent is in many cases very difficult. This prevents the development of industry.

  3. 1. What is the fourth industrial revolution for you?

Industry 4.0 concerns the disappearance of the people-machines barrier and is possible thanks to the Internet. Industry 4.0 is not only about technology, but also about the new ways of working and the role of people in the industry. One of the characteristic elements of Industry 4.0 is wireless data transmission to supervisory systems via the Internet. People, machines and IT systems can automatically exchange information with each other. Environment Industry 4.0 enables access to information at any time from anywhere. Through intelligent production systems, all factory components are connected, from procurement to transport. It is worth noting that Industry 4.0 does not aim to create factories in which people are replaced by robots. Thanks to the industrial revolution, factories are becoming a better place to work, because thanks to new solutions, employees receive better and better support in their work.

    2. What do you think about science supporting business and vice versa? Can one not function without the other?

In my opinion, science cannot exist without industry, nor can industry exist without science. Science is related to conducting research, looking for new solutions that can then be implemented by companies, for example for production. I agree with Klara and Monika, who have the same opinion as me. The current situation with the coronavirus is a good example. The vaccine was invented by a scientist, and a large pharmaceutical company will produce it on a large scale so that it will reach the common man.

    3. How do you perceive the development of industry 4.0 in Poland?

On this issue, I also agree with my colleagues: Klara and Monika that Poland is at the beginning of the Industry 4.0 path. Industry 4.0 is a bit like when a new movie enters cinemas, in the West or in the United States, this movie is shown in cinemas in January and it will hit Polish cinemas in June. The basis of Industry 4.0 is the Internet of Things, machine learning and appropriate equipment, but also the willingness and openness of people to new technologies. It is true that, due to the pandemic, some areas of life accelerated the development of computerization, but it is still a long way.

    1. Thank you very much for your answer. You raised the important issue of the appropriate technological background needed to launch industry 4.0. Moreover, the human mentality and habituation to proven things do not always allow new technologies to fully develop. As for science and business, they always go hand in hand. After inventions, if they are not delivered for production, they will only become a decoration for the cards, somewhere in a drawer. Our country is just facing industry 4.0, and although it is starting to function in some companies, the rest are afraid of such big changes, and perhaps costly (especially in the current situation).

What is the fourth industrial revolution for you?

For me, the fourth revolution is a new challenge that I can't wait to start working on (I work every day taking part in the development of ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems)) so I try to implement IoT solutions on a daily basis.

What do you think about science supporting business and vice versa? Can one not function without the other?

It seems to me that science can function without business, however, there will be little point in staggering the results of such research. In addition, working on solutions to business problems allows for obtaining larger grants and funds, which are usually necessary to run them.

How do you perceive the development of industry 4.0 in Poland?

The basis of Industry 4.0 in Poland will be the Internet of Things and machine learning. These two areas have developed very strongly in the last year in Poland. At present, however, a lot of work has been put on hold, but I still think that this is where our revolution will begin.

  5. Thank you very much for your answer. While working on the development of ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems), you certainly know how important it is to collect data from individual sensors and submit them for analysis in the cloud. In addition, more and more are required that such data be processed in real time. on the other hand, the algorithm should predict e.g. traffic volume and redirect an ambulance to another, faster route. You have noticed that it is possible for science to function without business, but it does not bring any benefits related to the spread of the product. It is also worth noting that the basis of Industry 4.0 is the Internet of Things and machine learning. Both areas have developed a lot in our country and there is still a need for them.
