Today, I will share with you a link to article about IEA’s Paris-aligned sustainable development scenario goals.
https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/most-clean-energy-tech-is-not-on-track-to-meet-climate-goals/
In this article you can read that most clean energy technologies and sectors are not advancing enough to meet the temperature goals set by the 2015 Paris climate agreement. Of 46 clean energy categories that the International Energy Agency sees as crucial for minimizing the impacts of climate change, only six are “on track” to meet the target of preventing global average temperatures from rising 2 degrees Celsius or more.
Please read this article and answer some questions:
- In your opinion how could we avoid climate change?
- Which categories mentioned in the article are not meeting goals and why?
- What do you think about renewable energy? Is worth to invest in this kind of source?
- What do you think about IEA's Paris-aligned sustainable development scenario goals? Are they necessary? Maybe, we should try another way to prevent global average temperatures from rising?
1. In your opinion how could we avoid climate change?
ReplyDeleteI guess we can't avoid it. The climate is changing from year to year and we don't have much influence on it. The decade causes a much bigger change. However, the century is unpredictable. In ancient times people were dying of cold (see "Girl with matches") today it's hard to find a place where it's winter. One or the other pole and its surroundings remain.
2. Which categories mentioned in the article are not meeting goals and why?
Only 6 of 46 are making progress. It's difficult to list which ones don't and wonder why. I think that companies that won't break them down are also thinking about it. Iterally reading these 40 categories should be in the energy sector, fuel supplies, industrial technologies and transport, but why they do not reach the assumed indicators is too difficult for me.
3. What do you think about renewable energy? Is worth to invest in this kind of source?
Yes, renewable energy attracts me more and more. Today, a lot of people want to make money and increase prices, but I hope that they will fall soon. I would like to install a solar farm on my building and thereby relieve the atmosphere of carbon dioxide. But I counted the cost of such installation around 50,000 return 7-8 years. At the moment, a difficult matter.
4. What do you think about IEA's Paris-aligned sustainable development scenario goals? Are they necessary? Maybe, we should try another way to prevent global average temperatures from rising?
In the article you mention it's clearly stated that the assumed goals willn't be achieved. So this already indicates the need for their modification. I think that the whole organization should lean and change assumptions or just develop new ones.
Thank you for your response. I agree with you that our climate is changing from year to year. You are right that we can't avoid climate change. I think we can slow the process. It's our fault. I think we need to change our thinking. We need to do everything we can to stop it. If all people do something to help stop climate change then we can do it. I also interest in solar farms. I observed that many people installed they to their buildings.
Delete1 In your opinion how could we avoid climate change?
ReplyDeleteThis problem is really difficult and complex. Scientists believe that carbon dioxide emissions should be phased out. Scientists suggest reducing emissions by increasing the use of electricity, e.g. more electric cars, building wind farms. Unfortunately, green electricity sources are unreliable. Wind does not air efficiently enough everywhere and not enough electricity arrives in every place. In addition, nuclear power plants are shut down. Scientists do not mention the fact that in order to build wind power plants or solar power plants, many dangerous substances must be used.
2. Which categories mentioned in the article are not meeting goals and why?
I agree that it is not possible to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 2030. Carbon dioxide emissions are not just caused by electricity generation. Carbon dioxide is also produced in the results of production of various components such as cement. In my opinion it cannot be reduced in such cases. Especially if the cost of production is most important.
3. What do you think about renewable energy? Is worth to invest in this kind of source?
As I said before. Renewable energy is inefficient. I am not an expert, but I believe that research should be directed to developing the safety of nuclear power plants.
4. What do you think about IEA's Paris-aligned sustainable development scenario goals? Are they necessary? Maybe, we should try another way to prevent global average temperatures from rising?
I think we don't have enough information to confirm the fact that the influence of carbon dioxide produced by man causes a temperature rise. Long ago there were periods of a big temperature rise in the world but there were also periods of glaciation, and yet people didn't live in the world.
Thank you for your response. I agree that climate change is a complex problem. I know that wind power efficiency is poor. A few years ago I worked on a project to increase wind turbin efficiency. After analyzing data I found that a new wind turbin efficiency is about 30 percent. I am afraid about nuclear power plants.
DeleteMaybe we can't avoid the climate change if in fact human activity have only limited effect on the changes. But I personally experienced problems with the air quality in developing countries (well, of course there are many other problems as well), so any changes targeted to limiting emission of CO2 and everything leading to air pollution should help even if it won't translate into stopping temperature's increase.
ReplyDeleteOne of the categories mentioned directly is concentrating solar power. There factors like the lack of supporting policies, tax reductions etc.
Renewable energy looks like a great idea, but still not ideal. It may be not as cost effective as conventional energy sources, produce waste that is ecologically as much ecologically harmful but simply by other means. I think it would be perfect to have some power plants in space and transfer the energy wirelessly to Earth or have crystals being the source of infinite energy like in Sci-Fi movies.
Thank you for your response. I agree with you that we can't avoid climate change. I think we can slow the process. I think like you that renewable energy looks like a great idea. I know this kind of energy source is not ideal. I think we can do something to reduce climate change and maybe in the future stop it. I am a dreamer but I believe in people. We can destroy everything or create a great world.
ReplyDelete1. In your opinion how could we avoid climate change?
ReplyDeleteOnly if we go to Mars. And besides jokes, climate change was very common on planet Earth, and even when a person did not exist. But today man has helped worsen the climate
2. Which categories mentioned in the article are not meeting goals and why?
I do not believe that it will be possible to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, although it is certainly possible, for this we need a close-knit society and strict restrictions, but this will kill the economy, and apparently the economy is more important than our health and life =)
3. What do you think about renewable energy? Is worth to invest in this kind of source?
Of course yes, in my opinion Denmark has completely switched to renewable energy sources (if we are talking about domestic use). But the biggest polluter in the world is Asia (China, India), and I do not think that it is possible to somehow influence these countries.
4. What do you think about IEA's Paris-aligned sustainable development scenario goals? Are they necessary? Maybe, we should try another way to prevent global average temperatures from rising?
Yes, we must introduce severe restrictions that will be very unpopular in many countries, and punish those who do not comply with these standards.
Thank you for your response. I know that it's difficult to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. We need to change our life and our habits. I agree with you about renewable energy. I think some regulations are good but a big problem is fulfill it by some countries.
Delete1. In your opinion how could we avoid climate change?
ReplyDeleteI think we can do it, but it requires the commitment of each of us. We would have to change our habits, e.g. watch how long we have the tap turned on, change our consumer approach and try to waste as little food as possible, reduce air travel or eat less meat. The truth, however, is that this minimization will be minimal without the involvement of companies.
2. Which categories mentioned in the article are not meeting goals and why?
I found this report (https://www.iea.org/topics/tracking-clean-energy-progress). Thirteen categories have a red dot with them, which means completely off track. I think that such an undertaking requires huge amounts of work but also money. That is why it is so difficult to keep pace and reduce the amount of carbon dioxide.
3. What do you think about renewable energy? Is worth to invest in this kind of source?
At the moment, I see our main hope in these technologies. We cannot endlessly exploit coal deposits that destroy nature not only during extraction but mainly during combustion. That is why I am very happy for such projects as the funding of domestic solar power plants.
4. What do you think about IEA's Paris-aligned sustainable development scenario goals? Are they necessary? Maybe, we should try another way to prevent global average temperatures from rising?
Certainly the provisions are very restrictive and we will not be able to comply with all of them. However, we must have a goal chosen to get as close to it as possible. Anything to improve the current situation is badly needed.
Thank you for your response and shared link. I agree with you in point 1. I think you are right that costs are a big problem to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide. Yes, I think like you about renewable energy. I think you are right that important is to have goals.
ReplyDelete1. Climate change cannot be avoided anymore, we can only minimize it. Unfortunately, we need to realize that a single person has little impact on preventing climate change. Big corporations and governments have the most to say. Countries should invest in renewable energy, abandon coal power plants almost one hundred percent. Do not grub up forests for new crops or investments, but afforest areas because afforestation levels have a large impact on the temperature in a given region. You know for sure that in the summer, especially now when it is over 30 degrees, temperaturę can be unbearable, and in the forested area it is significantly cooler.
ReplyDelete2. As always, the world has a problem with reducing CO2 emissions. Many countries cannot afford to build power plants using renewable energy sources. In addition, I once wrote about an article in which scientists work on CO2 capture technology. Unfortunately, it is clear that progress in this area is not as effective as expected.
3. Of course. Fossil deposits are finite, wind and sun are not. Examples of Scandinavian countries show that a country can completely change to renewable energy, thanks to which we have a cleaner environment, but also the inhabitants pay less for electricity. The problem when building power plants based on renewable sources are high construction costs and, above all, changing people's attitude towards such a solution. I remember when wind farms were introduced in Poland and a lot of people joked about it, same when someone installed solar panels on roofs. The state should financially support such projects, instead of supporting non-profitable mines, which only cause a lot of problems. But as always, the most important is money, not the good of future generations or the health of those present.
4. I think they are very restrictive and poorly enforced. We should not measure all countries with one measure and impose the same standards on them. Highly developed countries should support those less developed in striving to meet the presented requirements. Punishing them only raises people's opposition, because the situation we now have is not caused by large industry and CO2 emissions in China but the result of the industrial revolution in Europe. Generally speaking, of course. I mean, we should think about what goals we want to pursue and whose participation in the implementation of these plans will have the greatest impact on final success.
1. In your opinion how could we avoid climate change?
ReplyDeleteAs of right now, I don’t believe it is possible to stop climate change doing serious harm. Even if the entire world unanimously agreed to take immediate action it would still take years to get the infrastructure in place to stop burning fossil fuels for energy. It would take decades to bring the tech needed to replace the internal combustion engine. If we’d started when the warnings were ramping up 20–30 years ago we’d already be 3/4 of the way there now.
2. Which categories mentioned in the article are not meeting goals and why?
One of the category that do not meet SDS goals is concentrating solar power, a few reason why the situation is as it is are:
It is non-dependable source of energy-Sudden cloudy weather reduces solar isolation by about 30–50% whereas it is only available during the day and storage costs another 50% of capital investment in form of batteries. The incoming energy cannot be controlled to meet demand
Lot of dependence on daily whether conditions -Rainy day/Cloudy weather would tremendously reduce solar energy from reaching the earth’s surface.
“Cannot be stored for long” form of energy once converted to usable power without investing further-As efficiency of stage device would reduce the already low efficiency of the device and several cycles of storage would store a negligible amount.
It is currently too expensive to harness solar power compared to other fossil fuel energy.
Demand does not match very well with timing of solar energy-As there is always an evening peak load consumption which cannot be met fractionally as sun would have set by then whereas morning peak might be met.
3. What do you think about renewable energy? Is worth to invest in this kind of source?
I think we definitely should invest in renewable energy, it can be pure source of energy and could satisfy ours growing needs for electricity. From what is seen in the market this is the direction the world is going to.
4. What do you think about IEA's Paris-aligned sustainable development scenario goals? Are they necessary? Maybe, we should try another way to prevent global average temperatures from rising?
It’s good that we are seting goals for climate changes prevention, especially when we are not meeting them we feel that the threat of destroying our planet is real. This should put more pressure at world biggest energy companies to put more effort in order to reach the original goals in renewable energy sector.
1. In your opinion how could we avoid climate change?
ReplyDeleteThe vast majority of the climate change is the industry that produces, among others, carbon dioxide or ozone. The removal of equatorial forests also has an impact on this. To avoid climate change, we should largely start with ourselves, e.g. by segregating waste, switching to economic heating, using renewable energy sources, and making thoughtful purchases. Unfortunately, we are very dependent on industry and we cannot rag it too much (especially now during the pandemic, when the economy of many countries has declined significantly).
2. Which categories mentioned in the article are not meeting goals and why?
The article talks about 6 categories that are on track to meet certain standards. while the other 40 have some problems. One of these latories is the concentration of electricity (renewable energy sources). Problems can be caused, e.g. by geographical location (no water reservoirs, rivers - it is not possible to start a hydroelectric power plant, poorly sunny areas - the problem of using solar panels), economic problems (too high costs associated with the modernization of plants - can cause problems with liquidity financial or dismissal of employees).
3. What do you think about renewable energy? Is worth to invest in this kind of source?
Of course, it is worth investing in renewable energy sources. However, this should be done wisely. Adjust technologies to possibilities. Conduct appropriate tests simulating the use and demand for electricity and the possibilities of generating it. The impact of such installations on the environment. Certainly, the most important argument is the profitability of this type of project and projected returns of installation costs.
4. What do you think about IEA's Paris-aligned sustainable development scenario goals? Are they necessary? Maybe, we should try another way to prevent global average temperatures from rising?
t is usually the case that the goals are right, only the methods and method of implementation raise doubts. First of all, we should realize the importance of caring for our common good, which is Mother Earth. It is also worth trying other methods that reduce the emission of harmful substances, appropriate waste management, etc.
1 In your opinion how could we avoid climate change?
ReplyDeleteI think it is too late to avoid change. The impact of all carbon dioxide that we've emitted since industrial revolution is sort of done. All we can do is to minimize it in the future, that is to lessen current and future emissions, and hope we won't trigger any positive-feedback climatic phenomenon.
2 Which categories mentioned in the article are not meeting goals and why?
One of categories is Concentrated Solar Power. Incidentally, I've read recently an interesting article on The Crescent Dunes solar plant that consumed $1B and went bankrupt, because it turned out it was too big, too complex and obsolete before it even started. It was also undercut by solar panels being cheaper and cheaper. But the goal is still written there.
3 What do you think about renewable energy? Is worth to invest in this kind of source?
I think it's unavoidable. The problem I see is that cheapest to produce is the kind that gives no guarantees, so it would require massive storage infrastructure. I mean really massive, the "if we'd like to use lead batteries, all the lead we have ever mined wouldn't suffice" kind of massive.
4 What do you think about IEA's Paris-aligned sustainable development scenario goals? Are they necessary? Maybe, we should try another way to prevent global average temperatures from rising?
My problem with those scenarios is that all those numbers are so suspiciously round. Why 2 degrees and not 1.9 or 2.1? Why reduction of CO2 emission by 20% and not 19% or 21%? What if 19% emission reduction is technologically and economically possible, and doing last percent would require twice the effort? All I know is that we'd need to radically re-model our ways of living.
1. In your opinion, how could we avoid climate change?
ReplyDeleteI think that we cannot avoid it entirely on that level. But it is possible to slow this process by introducing changes in the economy and society.
2. Which categories mentioned in the article are not meeting goals, and why?
It's very expensive to introduce them globally (in households, factories)...
3. What do you think about renewable energy? Is it worth to invest in this kind of source?
..that's why we need to invest in this kind of source. If they were more accessible, cheap, and energy-effective, there would be a more significant demand, which is a motor for improvement.
4. What do you think about IEA's Paris-aligned sustainable development scenario goals? Are they necessary? Maybe, we should try another way to prevent global average temperatures from rising?
There is an interesting, independent movie about this matter, released this month. It's called "It's Okay to Panic." with prof. Szymon Malinowski from the University of Warsaw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=osm5vyJjNY4 - maybe you would be interested in it.
1. In your opinion how could we avoid climate change?
ReplyDeleteNo. We could only slow down them. The climate is changing year after ear. The problem with that is the changes are too fast!
2. Which categories mentioned in the article are not meeting goals and why?
The solar power and I think that this category isn't meeting goals because nowadays it's a plenty of relief if someone decide to invest in them. Their instalation are already well supported by countries.
3. What do you think about renewable energy? Is worth to invest in this kind of source?
Sure! It's an olny good way which should replace nowadays source of energy (like carbon).
4. What do you think about IEA's Paris-aligned sustainable development scenario goals? Are they necessary? Maybe, we should try another way to prevent global average temperatures from rising?
I think that this development scenario have the biggest impact for climates change nowadays. If their arrangements will become daily life then we wouldn't produce as much carbon as now.
1. In your opinion how could we avoid climate change?
ReplyDeleteI think that ordinary people can't do too much to avoid climate change, however, changing some habits can be helpful in preventing climate change. I found the following recommendations on the Internet:
- look for the Energy Star label when buying new devices
- switch to energy-efficient light bulbs
- unplug computers, TVs and other electronics when you are not using them
- don’t waste food
- take public transport
- ride a bike
2. Which categories mentioned in the article are not meeting goals and why?
I am not an expert on climate change. I admit that I have never been interested in this topic, as I mentioned when answering question number 1. In my opinion, an individual cannot do too much. It's hard for me to say why some categories do not meet the goals. The article says that only 6 categories have made satisfactory progress. 40 remaining categories have not progressed or are delayed. I don't know where it comes from but I think that the costs of maintenance and production can certainly matter.
3. What do you think about renewable energy? Is worth to invest in this kind of source?
I think it makes sense to invest in renewable energy sources. Countries such as Canada, Denmark and the Netherlands are investing heavily in renewable energy sources and are good at it. The weather conditions have to be conductive to use renewable energy source, for example: solar panels or windmills, but I think that where it is possible it should be invested in renewable energy sources. I am sure that there will be more and more renewable energy sources in the future.
4. What do you think about IEA's Paris-aligned sustainable development scenario goals? Are they necessary? Maybe, we should try another way to prevent global average temperatures from rising?
In the article, the authors mentioned about 46 categories and only 6 of them made progress. The article shows that most of the goals will not be achieved. The authors suggested what would be done by the individual sectors to reduce emissions.
1.In your opinion how could we avoid climate change?
ReplyDeleteThe most important thing we can do to prevent climate change is to burn less fossil fuels and, consequently, reduce carbon dioxide emissions. And this is the biggest problem.
2Which categories mentioned in the article are not meeting goals and why?
We can’t do it right now. Becouse the most of this pollution comes from production and industry. We can’t stop production. We can plant absorbing plants there and also make biofuel. But even in Poland there are
hundreds of thousands of fallow because either the government does not want to give people land for cultivation or farmers do not have enough income from this land.
3.What do you think about renewable energy? Is worth to invest in this kind of source?
It all depends what resource and in which country. For example, in Poland it is hard to obtain solar energy. But why we can’t use Bioenergy, Biomass, Biogas, and Biofuel? This is also Renewable energy.
4.What do you think about IEA's Paris-aligned sustainable development scenario goals? Are they necessary? Maybe, we should try another way to prevent global average temperatures from rising?
I agree that it is too difficult to meet these goals.
