Week 7 [15-21.06.2020] Cannabis Therapeutics and the Future of Neurology

Hi, medical marijuana has been legalized quite recently in Poland. I present an article about the therapeutic properties of this plant.
The plant contains cannabinoids. This is a group of organic chemicals that affect cannabinoid receptors.
Cannabinoids after attaching to cannabinoid receptors, cells block the effect of calcium ions from the extracellular fluid to the cytoplasm and inhibit cAMP production. As a result, cell metabolism changes and changes occur in the release of hormones and neurotransmitters. These receptors are part of the endocannabinoid system - an organism system that is involved in many physiological processes, including energy management regulation, regulation of neurohormonal, neuroimmunological connections, motor activity, mood, motivation, hunger and satiety, energy use and control of lipid and carbohydrate metabolism.
We currently have very well researched 2 cannabinoids: CBD and THC.
CBD has the same chemical composition as THC, but the atoms are arranged differently. This small difference causes THC to exhibit psychoactive effects, while CBD does not. Cannabis components may provide myriad benefits on target symptoms in this complex disorder:

• Agitation: THC, CBD, linalool

• Anxiety: CBD, THC (low dose), linalool

• Psychosis: CBD

• Insomnia / Restlessness: THC, linalool

• Anorexia: THC

• Aggression: THC, CBD, linalool

• Depression: THC, limonene, CBD

• Pain: THC, CBD

• Memory: alpha-pinene (Russo, 2011; Russo and March, 2017) + THC

• Neuroprotection: CBD, THC

• Reduced Aβ plaque formation: THC, CBD, THCA

I have a few questions:
1.What diseases , except for those I mentioned, can be treated with medical marijuana? (e.g. mentioned in the article) and have you heard of marijuana therapy for this diseases before?
2.Do you know anyone using medical marijuana therapy and How do you think, this therapy can be effective?
3.Would you be treated with medical marijuana?

I'm not a doctor but I have heard about the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS) a long time ago. Anyway, who has not heard, since it was loud in the media. Many politicians were involved in the fight to legalize marijuana. We have succeeded and we have a new medicine. Will the effective time show.

2.Do you know anyone using medical marijuana therapy and How do you think, this therapy can be effective?

I have a friend who has MS and has been treating medicinal marijuana since possible. She feel better and worse once. Probably like everyone with MS. Therefore, I cannot comment on the effectiveness of this method of treatment in plus or in minus.

3.Would you be treated with medical marijuana?

I think every kind of treatment is good. If someone says that I should take marijuana, I will take it.

    1. Yes, I totally agree with You, that when somebody is in pain or ill, then such person should take all opportunities that are accesseable and use it to try to minimalize the pain.

  2. 1.What diseases , except for those I mentioned, can be treated with medical marijuana?

I heard that. But many other substances have the same effect on the body as THC. I've read research on spinal pains caused by muscle tension. In these studies, a substance called Tyzanidine was compared with THC. There was no difference between these drugs.

2.Do you know anyone using medical marijuana therapy and How do you think, this therapy can be effective?

I don't know anyone who's using this therapy. But I know that a lot of people in California are „sick” and need medication with THC. You need a prescription to buy marijuana in California. That's why doctors are present where you can buy marijuana. I doubt it's only medical. People just want to get drugged.

3.Would you be treated with medical marijuana?

I don't think so. I have a disease that could be treated with marijuana, but there are many drugs that work the same way.

A while ago I have heard about treatment for epilepsy. It was controversies case because it concerns children therapy. Father of a sick child wanted to treat his daughter this way and he was publicly punished by media for this. Furthermore from what is mentioned in the article medical marijuana can be also used in brain tumors, neurodegenerative disorders like Parkinson's or Alzheimer's disease therapies.

2.Do you know anyone using medical marijuana therapy and How do you think, this therapy can be effective?

My husband’s grandmother is using marijuana oils drops for pain relief due to hers joints pain. In her case the therapy is working, she is feeling much better since she start taking the drops and due to lower level of pain she is taking more activities which is important to sustain good movement condition.

3.Would you be treated with medical marijuana?

I’m proponent of all natural based type of treatment, so If my condition could be treated by marijuana I would try it.

  4. It seems that there are many diseases that can be treated with cannabis, some mentioned in the article are Parkinson and Alzheimer Disease.

I don't know anyone using medical marijuana. I've only seen some news reports about patients using marijuana or rather families and their difficulties in obtaining it because of some reasons.

I have nothing against such treatment, I don't know what are exact side effects, but if it's nothing worse than in other treatments are they're all equally effective then I would go for marijuana.

Very, very interesting topic, thanks to the author =) Medical marijuana helps with epilepsy, it is also prescribed in cases of psychological disorders, in addition, it is prescribed for tumors.

2.Do you know anyone using medical marijuana therapy and How do you think, this therapy can be effective?
I do not know anyone who would use medical marijuana. I use creams on cannabis, but I don’t think it’s the same thing)

3.Would you be treated with medical marijuana?
I don’t think that drugs can be bad, and even more so drugs that are based on natural components

I have heard that such therapy can help with many ailments. I am glad that research is ongoing all the time to check which diseases cannabis can help. I read that cannabis and the cannabinoids have been identified as a potential therapeutic to assist in the treatment of PTSD due to their action on the endocannabinoid system, which has been recognized as an important factor in the body’s response to stress, processing of emotional memories, and in the lessening of the fear response, also known as fear extinction learning.

    2. Do you know anyone using medical marijuana therapy and How do you think, this therapy can be effective?

I don't know anybody who's been taking this therapy. But I think there are enough studies showing its effectiveness in various diseases that I can trust them.

    3. Would you be treated with medical marijuana?

Yes, if I ever had a disease with an effective cannabis treatment, I wouldn't hesitate to use it. Of course, if it was the best option.

    1. I am agreeing with You that currently we have a lot of studies on marijuana and it's effectiveness in treating people, so I also won't be particularly hesitant of trying it in some medical conditions.

  7. 1. Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, chronic pain, epilepsy, depression and many more. I heard about marijuana depression treatment. The medical marijuana raises a lot of controversy, but there is a lot of infoabout its positive effects and more and more doctors are using such therapy. At one time there was a lot of news about this in the media. I honestly didn't know that they legalized it in Poland. I think it's a good idea, because patients with pain can use it instead of highly addictive painkillers like morphine.

    2. I don't know anyone who would apply this therapy. I don't know much about it either. I have heard a lot that many people pretend to be sick just to have legal access to the drug. I think marijuana therapy works like any painkiller therapy. Sometimes it’s better, sometimes worse. A lot depends on our psyche. If we think that the therapy helps us, we will feel much better.

    3. If the therapy did not have many side effects, I would probably use it. When you're sick you don't have much choice, you just have to take some medicine. If there was an option to take some pills or smoke marijuana, I would choose pills because they are more convenient to consume.

    1. I think that marijuana can be really helpful to help ease the pain and minimalize the effects of some diseases. Unfortunately I am affraid that some people may use it just to have a legal access to it and later not neccessarly use it for medical reasons.

First, this is not my area of interest. This is not my topic. From this article I have read that medical marihuana can be used in parkinson disease or alzheimer disease. I don’t remember but I think that I didn’t heard about marijuana therapy for this diseases.

    2. Do you know anyone using medical marijuana therapy and How do you think, this therapy can be effective?
I don’t know anyone who using medical marijuana therapy. I am not an expert in this field. I think maybe this therapy can be effective but we need more experiments.

    3. Would you be treated with medical marijuana?
I think that definitely not. I don’t trust this therapy. I am afraid that this could be dangerous for my health. Probably I am wrong but that what I feel.

  9. 1. As mentioned in previous comments, medical marijuana's application proved its effectiveness in Parkinson's and Alzheimer's treatment. I worked with data aggregated for the Michael J. Fox Foundation, which in the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative. Many people answered that, after cannabis, they had mildly better / markedly better symptoms like tremor, slow movement, stiffness, or dyskinesia.

    2. Yes, I know a person who is using medical marijuana in aphasia treatment, yet I'm not aware of its influence on treatment.

    3. If my illness would require that - yes, for sure.

Some neurodegenerative conditions, but I can't say if those are different than the ones You've mentioned - I don't know much about this.

2.Do you know anyone using medical marijuana therapy and How do you think, this therapy can be effective?
I don't think I know anyone personally. I guess it can be effective if it was formally approved - there need to be some data showing the therapy is effective in some conditions. I don't like the situation that medical is legal but the state is still chasing some unlucky persons for couple of grams of weed or burn whole fields that miss some paperwork.

3.Would you be treated with medical marijuana?
Well, I wouldn't like to be in a situation I would have to be treated, but if I should - yes I would.

I am very sorry, but I am not an expert in this field and I will not speak on this subject, because I just don't know it. I have heard something about depression, but it is already mentioned.

2.Do you know anyone using medical marijuana therapy and How do you think, this therapy can be effective?

As I mentioned earlier, I don't know anything about it and have not heard anyone being treated in such a way. Apparently it's not that common.

3.Would you be treated with medical marijuana?

I don't think I would decide to be treated this way. On the other hand, I am aware that some drugs contain substances found in this plant. Also, I don't know what's worse (it's best not to get sick).

3.Would you be treated with medical marijuana?

I heard that medical marijuana was legalized in Poland but I was not interested in this subject. I found in the internet that medical cannabis can be used to treat the following diseases:
    - Alzheimer's disease
    - Cancer
    - Epilepsy
I have not heard that the diseases I mentioned can be treated with medical cannabis, but I searched the Internet for information and found that it is a widely used solution in the world.

2.Do you know anyone using medical marijuana therapy and How do you think, this therapy can be effective?

I don't know anyone who uses medical marijuana. Scientific research shows that the use of medical cannabis is sometimes the only solution to alleviate the pain of a sick person.

3.Would you be treated with medical marijuana?

I think if I was sick and needed to take medical marijuana, I would agree. Medical marijuana is like a medicine in this aspect.
