The brain has a powerful ability to remember and connect events separated in time. A scientists at Columbia’s Zukerman Institute uncovered a mechanism by which hippocampus builds bridges across time. They done a research on mice.
Please read the article and answer a few questions
- Have you ever witnessed an accident? Do you remember it?
- Do you remember information easily?
- What do you think about this article?
- How could we use the results presented in this article?
1. Have you ever witnessed an accident? Do you remember it?
ReplyDeleteI have never experienced a very serious accident. As a child, I broke my arm while playing basketball but I only remember pieces of information from that period.
2. Do you remember information easily?
When it comes to learning new things and memorizing them, my brain is doing well. However, when it comes to remembering events it is a bit worse. Sometimes I can remember childhood events and sometimes I even have trouble determining what I did last month. Same with watching movies and series, I often forget the detail and remember only the main plot.
3. What do you think about this article?
The results look very interesting. As our brain still has so many secrets, every research that brings us closer to understanding it is something positive.
4. How could we use the results presented in this article?
As far as I know, the hippocampus is one of the most important areas of our brain. Getting to know it better and how it stores information can be the key to better therapies to for example Alzheimer's disease. Such knowledge may also bring us closer to simulating the behaviour of our brain, which at this point seems to be very distant.
Thank you for your response. Our brain is complicated. Sometimes we remember things that are not important and forget things that we should remember. I have the same that I forget details from watched films. I think your examples mentioned in point 4 are good and I agree with them.
Delete1. Have you ever witnessed an accident? Do you remember it?
ReplyDeleteI have never witnessed an accident but I happened to take part in one. Three years ago I had a car crash. I am surprised but I remember everything from that day. I left home in the afternoon because I wanted to do my last shopping before holidays. The next day I had a plane to Asia. There was a green light when I was crossing the intersection and suddenly a car hit the side of my car with high speed. I stopped a few centimeters from the pole and the car that hit me stopped only a few meters away. I was very nervous then. Fortunately, nothing happened to me. I immediately got out of the car and walked over to the car that was at the intersection and asked man if I had the green light. When I made sure I was right, I calmed down. An ambulance, two fire trucks and a police arrived at the accident. Everything lasted about 3 hours. The driver of the second car was taken to a hospital. I remember that I was very angry when six firemen came up to me and started asking me if I was fine. Fortunately, the next day I flew on vacation.
2.Do you remember information easily?
It seems to me that I remember information quite easily. It also depends on the amount of information provided and the type of information. If it is information from everyday life or topics that interest me, I have no major problems with remembering information. I remember that I didn't like history at school. It was hard for me to remember all dates and events. When I check student programs I remember them very well so I can find two similar programs written by cheating students quite easily. :D
3.What do you think about this article?
The article is very interesting. It seems to me that the brain is a great mine of knowledge about the body. The story of a woman at the beginning of the article introduces the topic of the article very well. In the answer to question number 1, I wrote that I had a car accident. When I had an accident, 2 fire trucks, an ambulance and police arrived. Sometimes I have a situation like the story described in the article. The article is written in a language understandable to ordinary readers who are not physicians.
4.How could we use the results presented in this article?.
I believe that research such as the one presented in this article can significantly contribute to the development of brain-related science. Understanding the mechanisms in the human brain can be very useful for neurologists as well as psychiatrists or psychologists. Maybe the diseases that are treated today as incurable will turn out to be curable. I think that research could allow the creation of a brain model could simulate the human brain.
Thank you for your response and your story about your accident. You are lucky that nothing has happened to you. Accident open eyes many people and they change something in their life. Did you change something after this accident?
DeleteI am little jealous about your memory. I have problems to remember things and learning proces takes a lot of time.
I agree with you in point 3 and 4.
1. Have you ever witnessed an accident? Do you remember it?
ReplyDeleteI witnessed a car accident once. I saw a woman in Toyota Yaris hit a cyclist at a bicycle crossing in Sopot. The worst thing is that I knew it would happen and I didn't even manage to shout being from 5-10 meters from the crossing. The driver didn't stop at all before the crossing and as if she had never entered anything. The accident victim was taken to the hospital.
2. Do you remember information easily?
I generally have a problem with concentration and memory.I could never concentrate and quickly grasp the material to learn, I felt like I was distracted. When I read a book and the next day I can't remember what I read. I have to go back to a couple of chapters and remember myself. In the case of TV series and films, the same. I remember serials or books from a few years ago better than a book or a movie I saw last year.
3. What do you think about this article?
The author of the study himself noted that the results do not clearly model clinical syndromes of any disorder. I think the study is another part of the information that will help us understand how our brain works.
4. How could we use the results presented in this article?
In recent years there has been a renaissance of research on the brain, in my opinion it is very good. New research is developing methods and at the same time it is contributing to the correction of errors. I hope that research will help to successfully overcome diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. We must remember that memory disorders are directly related to psychiatry, so brain research can contribute to the revolution in psychiatry. On the one hand, there are still many things we do not understand, such as how memory works or various cognitive processes. On the other hand, thanks to the tamik researched models of almost all such processes, i.e. we can imagine how they are going
Thank you for your answer and an accident story.
DeleteI have similar problems with memory. I always needed much more time to remember a part of material from a lesson. I have problems with remember englisch words but to remember a windows serial numer is not a problem to me. I agree with you in point 3 nad 4.
1. Have you ever witnessed an accident? Do you remember it?
ReplyDeleteYes, it was somewhere in 1992. I went to the Śródmieście railway station and saw a young boy jumping - throwing himself under the train. So many years have passed but I can still see him through my eyes. Brr ... that's enough.
2. Do you remember information easily?
If a given information - a given type of information is interesting for me, then of course I remember it quickly. Otherwise, it flies in and out through the ears. But I notice that it's getting harder with "age". So you should train your mind all the time. In my opinion this's extremely important.
3. What do you think about this article?
The human mind has always been inscrutable. And this article exactly represents this thesis. Very interesting and I read it with interest. I often wonder how this body works. I think it's still an undiscovered mine. Although, when I watched Professor Ząbek (neurosurgeon - TVN program) and he shows how he implanted electrodes into the brain and thanks to this people feel better this shock.
4. How could we use the results presented in this article?
I hope that this type of research will contribute to solving problems with brain diseases. This is what we should use for this type of research.
Thank you for your answers and history about accident. Some situations will be never forgotten by our brain. I agree with you that when we are older then harder is to remember things. I always remember stupid things but not those what was important. I agree with you in point 3 and 4.
Delete1. Have you ever witnessed an accident? Do you remember it?
ReplyDeleteYes, I once had a minor accident. While riding the bicycle to school, the front wheel was blocked as a result of which I literally flipped over and most likely hit my head on the road surface. At school I was supposed to be like this 5 minutes before the start of the classes, I was 5 minutes after the start. Unfortunately, for about 10 minutes I had to lose consciousness and do not remember this moment. I only remember that I experienced a damaged bicycle more than a headache.
2. Do you remember information easily?
It is different with remembering information. It's almost easier to absorb knowledge in the morning. I remember things that interest me even faster and for longer. However, it is difficult for me to learn something that I do not understand at all. I think that I go through certain learning phases while learning.
3. What do you think about this article?
I think the article is quite interesting. It brings some fresh look at issues related to the functioning of the brain, especially the hippocampus and building connections to consolidate the moments associated with certain "unforgettable" events in life. I miss the presentation in the form of e.g. tabular or graph (it is easier to understand the author's message then).
4. How could we use the results presented in this article?
I am not an expert in this field and I do not fully understand the principles of the brain, in particular the hippocampus. However, I think that some patterns specific to the human brain can be separated. Maybe it will be possible to use the acquired patterns to create a characteristic of the human brain.
Thank you for your response and story about your accident. I agree with you that easy is to remember things that we like. I also easily remember stupid things and for long time.
Delete1. Fortunately, no, but my husband was. In elementary school our mutual friend was hit by a car at a pedestrian crossing and flew a few meters away. His legs were broken and he underwent over half a year of rehabilitation. I sympathize with others that they must have witnessed such traumatic accidents, especially Michał. Seeing a person taking their own lives or dying in an accident is not something anyone would like to experience.
ReplyDelete2. It depends on the information. If I'm learning something that interests me, I think I can quickly remember information. If it's something that I have to remember to pass a colloquium or I'm not interested but I know I have to, it takes me more time, and then I have a big problem with remembering what was going on. It's easiest to remember things related to my hobby or story from books and comics. Even if after some time I forget what the story was about, it is enough to flip through the comic and immediately remember what happened sometimes even with details. So I conclude that my memory is highly selective in this aspect. In terms of remembering and recalling information, I've always wondered why we remember our failures or mistakes so well, even if it's been twenty years since some stupid behavior, I can always remember it at bedtime.
3. It is very interesting and allows us to explore further areas of the brain. It is interesting that our brain is able to remember and associate certain events with sound or a specific image so that each occurrence of the stimulus causes specific emotions in us. It's a bit like when we smell the delicious food and we are immediately hungry. It is fascinating in the very work of the brain that it always uses a minimum of energy, always finds the optimal way not to overload our body. I did not expect that neurons do not communicate with each other all the time but create synapses for this purpose, and do not use the electrical activity of cells.
4. I think that thanks to such results we can get to know such a fascinating and mysterious organ as the brain. In addition, stimulation of the brain areas responsible for memory would allow the treatment of patients' traumatic experiences, perhaps even to remove or blur specific memories in memory. A deeper study of the relationship between stimuli and memories could somehow help people with brain injuries to learn.
Thank you for your response. I agree with you that seeing someone death is not a view we wanted to see. This situations could change our life and be with us to the end of our life. I think I am lucky because I have never broken leg or arm. I think you are right that when something interest us then we learn it quickly. What about stupid things? I agree with you in point 3 and 4. You have interesting point of view.
Delete1 Have you ever witnessed an accident? Do you remember it?
ReplyDeleteYes, when I was a kid. I was waiting at the street crossing, then saw a firetruck hurrying to some fire accident, with sirens on. It was winter, and the streets were a bit icy, and the truck lost the traction. It was skidding directly onto me, but I was standing there calmly, as there was a streetlight pole between us. Finally it crushed into streetlight, couple of glass shards reached me, firemen got out to asses the damages. A moment later, another firetruck passed the scene, this one reached its destination. Then, I continued my way back home.
2 Do you remember information easily?
I can remember information easily if I can connect it to whole body of knowledge I already remember. Rarely I can remember isolated facts or numbers.
3 What do you think about this article?
It's quite interesting. I wonder if this random patterns occur since the simplest brains had hippocampus analogue evolved, or is it later thing.
4 How could we use the results presented in this article?
I think it's too soon to think about application, but it can be a good basis for further research.
Thank you for your response and accident story. Did this accident influence your life? Sometimes when we see an accident we thinking about our life and change something for better. Unfortunately our life is short and we don't know when we die. We sometimes forget about that.
DeleteI agree with you about this article. Our brain is very interesting.
Unfortunately I can't recall any accident that would fit the context of the article.
ReplyDeleteAs for the remembering information, in general I thin I do remember information easily, but it depends on the type of information. For some reason I have problems with associating persons and event, like
I remember that something has happened but I have difficulties in remembering who was present there. It also applies to historical facts so I was suffering on history lessons.
The article is interesting as it might be showing a new way of how neural activity should be modeled. I'm not an expert in biology, but what I thought up to now was that information is stored by creating new connections between neurons that create new patters of neural activity. The fact that information is stored in the connections themselves seems like an important discovery. Findings from the article may not be a definitive proof but if indeed it was how the brain stores new information it could be helpful in many areas. If we understood the exact proces maybe we could control it. Cool application would be implanting some memories into a brain.
Thank you for your response. I agree that this article is interesting. Our brain is amazing. I easily remember stupid things but I have problem with important things. Do you also remember stupid things easily?
Delete1. Have you ever witnessed an accident? Do you remember it?
ReplyDeleteFortunately, I never witnessed an accident, but as a child, I broke my arm while playing basketball, and once broke my leg.
2. Do you remember information easily?
Yes, it’s easy for me to remember something. I remember details and dates well.
3. What do you think about this article?
I really like articles about our brain. This is probably the biggest secret for me. And every scientific article makes my understanding about us a little clearer.
4. How could we use the results presented in this article?
It’s hard to say, since we are talking about hypocarm, then probably we could improve our ability to remember and store some information
Thank you for your response. Our brain is very interesting. I agree with you in 100%. You are lucky to have a good memory. I would like to have a photographic memory. What about you?
ReplyDelete1. Have you ever witnessed an accident? Do you remember it?
ReplyDeleteYes, and I remember it quite good. A few years ago I was a witness to the accident involving pedestrian and a car. I was driving and a car ahead of me pull under the wheel a men walking very close to lane. Luckily I was able to brake in time, I get out from my car and go to check If I can help accident victims I any way. The pedestrian was injured in a head and a leg, but conscious and in one peace. Together with others accident’s witnesses we secured the victim and wait until ambulance came. Since then I recall this accident every time I drive this road.
2. Do you remember information easily?
It’s depend, there were some things I remembered quite well while other I couldn’t force myself to recalled. Not so long ago I start using memory techniques to improve my skills in this area, I was surprised how quickly it brought results. I recommend it to everyone who struggle with memory trouble.
3. What do you think about this article?
I find it pretty interesting. The idea behind the study seems to be similar to Pavlov’s experiment but light years ahead in terms of measurement advancement. Nowadays, we can measure neurons activity knowing from witch part of the brain they are from, also thanks to computer programs we are able to find patterns in randomness – Pavlov didn’t even dream about such methods.
4. How could we use the results presented in this article?
Thanks to this and other studies that are trying to get dipper knowledge about human’s brain we are closer and closer to be able to influence or even change some things in the functioning of our brain. Results of presented study could be used to help PTS patients or be used to improve learning process.
1. Have you ever witnessed an accident? Do you remember it?
ReplyDeleteLuckilly for me no. I witnessed a collision, but nothing serious happen. Only a few car parts needed to be painted ;)
2. Do you remember information easily?
Not really. I was really calm down (especially that someone's car crashed, not mine) so I remember only a few moments. If it was my car then I will remember it for sure :D!
3. What do you think about this article?
Very interesting- the human brain constantly reveals new secrets to us.
4. How could we use the results presented in this article?
We can help people with trauma start living normal. Research on hippocampus stimulation can lead to new therapies which will let them to forget about these events (rape, serious accident, domestic violence...)
ReplyDelete1. Have you ever witnessed an accident? Do you remember it?
Fortunately, I have not. I had one dangerous situation, in which other driver forced priority (is that how you call it in English?) on the road, and I had to escape, damaging a little my car when I was 20 years old to omit the accident. And yes, many years later, I still remember most of it.
2. Do you remember information easily?
I think that depends on the information, if it's something interesting for me, then my brain is eager to remember it. I tend to skip a lot of what is going on :)
3. What do you think about this article?
I read it previously, and I found it fascinating! The mechanism responsible for generating new connections related to particular events is essential for a more in-depth understanding of our nature.
4. How could we use the results presented in this article?
I think that this kind of research is significant in the field of disease understanding, which involves dysfunctions in associative memory, such as panic and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Have you ever witnessed an accident? Do you remember it?
ReplyDeleteAs far as I can go with my memory, I don’t recall to be a witness of some serious accident. I was once in a small car accident, but it was more of a collision – car ahead of me cross my lane and I had to stop immidiately and car behind me couldn’t stop in time and lightly hit the bak of my car. But nothing too serious came from this situation and for sure I wasn’t extremely stressed and I remember all the aspects of the situaion pretty well to these days.
Do you remember information easily?
I can’t say that I have some major problem with memorizing information. I think I have pretty good memory and I remember easily all the information that are important for me. I am trying not to rubbish my mind with useless piece of things, but when I have to memorize something, in my opinion it is not a real problem for me.
What do you think about this article?
I think this article was very interesting. Maybe the authrs didn’t give any definit results and conclusions, but it was very interesting to learn that in described situation – 15 seconds between an impulse for the mouse, which was a sound, and next impuls – unpleasent puff of air, there wasn’t a constant neurons’ activity, but they rather fire in random points of time. It suggested that human brain in such cases (while connecting some event from the past with impulses that was present then) store some information in synapses and then uses them later.
How could we use the results presented in this article?
I agree with what was stated at the end of the article – the main field we could use results presented in the article is to fight with panic attacks and post – traumatic disorders. It is extremely important to learn all the proccess od combining event with impulses and than try to undo such connections. It would be really helpful for people, who lived through some trauma in the past and after that can’t go back to normal life.
