Week 7 [12.19-25.12.2016] Teach Kids Math Using The Model Method For Math From Singapore

Hello everybody.

I want you take a minute to read this short article about teaching math young students. In current situation where everybody is trying to encourage young people to attend computer science or related studies, maybe we should start earlier (in kindergartens or elementary schools) and we should focus on making math approachable by youngsters.

  1. What do you think about presented method?
  2. Does it could be applied in polish environment?
  3. Can you suggest example exercises for such method?

  1. 1. What do you think about presented method?
I found this method very interesting, especially coming back to my memories when I started Maths at primary school, which I found very boring at the early stage. I am not an expert on teaching however applying common sense to this method, I think that it might be useful.
    2. Does it could be applied in polish environment?
To the general school environment - probably no, taking into consideration the turmoil around the situation with primary schools/ gymnasiums. I really doubt that this method could be applied across the country, however in some private schools I think so. There are plenty of advertisements for Maths for preschool, toddlers, during which simple concepts (and sometimes more advanced) are taught to 3, 4 years old children.
    3. Can you suggest example exercises for such method?
I do not feel competent enough for this.

  2. 1) What do you think about presented method?
I like it, I think specially at the very early stages visualising a problem is a key denominator for making sure all the kids understand the problem. By representing the problem in the form of diagram we are understood not only by more abstractive thinking children but by all of them.

    2) I think it could we just need to first teach elders how to talk to each other not fight each other, than not to destroy already working programs but evolving and making them better. Sorry for sarcasm but I cannot understand how come we are just crossing out something which was built for couple of years just to start the project from the beginning in addition for tax payers money.

    3) I think any problem at the level of primary school can be presented this way lets say: There are 3 cities along the road. City A is first and it's distance to the next city B along the road is 1km. City C is 5 km from the city B. What's the distance between city A and C - here you go, can you please solve it?

    Thanks for your article Ewelina.

  3. 1. What do you think about presented method?

The Model Method seems to be very useful. However I think it should be used parallel to simultaneous equations. I’m conservative in terms of teaching so in my opinion it can be just a supporting method in math teaching.

    2. Could it be applied in polish environment?

Yes, I think it could be applied. Of course it needs to be well prepared for the Polish conditions. Every new teaching method should be tested and verified by responsible Polish department of teaching. If the results are satisfactory, this method can be applied.

    3. Can you suggest example exercises for such method?

I have no idea. Personally, I believe that there are so many creative teachers in the teaching of early school that they will devise many interesting exercises using this method.

    1. This method has been already tested in country with one of the best school system in the world. I think our schools need new fresh approach.

    2. It doesn't matter. This method should be prepared for the Polish conditions. We have really different learning and teaching environment than in other countries.

  4. 1. What do you think about presented method?

It seems pretty similar to what we have learned when we were kids. At least in my school the method of learning was similar and I don’t see any problems with explaining it to children right know. However I have some doubts about this methods because it may cause further problems with more advanced math problems. Not everything can be simplified to this model and the question is what specialists think about it. How using this method will affect leaning more complex and complicated problems.

    2. Does it could be applied in polish environment?

I am not a specialists when it comes to teaching and being a pedagogue. As I said in previous question I would like to know the opinion of specialists and how they see it. In general I think that any method that helps understand the problem is good, sometimes when we had problems with learning something we used non standard methods and whatever works is good.

    3. Can you suggest example exercises for such method?

There are plenty examples of exercises for this method in the internet. Partially it reminds me of learning calculations by using colourful sticks. Some examples can be found here: http://www.koobits.com/2012/11/06/techniques-for-learning-the-singapore-math-model-method

  5. What do you think about presented method?

Thanks for an interesting article. I think this method is very good for teaching youngsters. They become familiarazed with general concepts and then it is easier for them to learn more complicated math on higher level education. Examples from real world are the best to imagine concepts and apply basic math. The earlier we start to learn math the better results we achive in a future.

Does it could be applied in polish environment?
Yes, it could be applied and I think that similar methods are already used. I remember some exercisies in books from primary school witch was based on real word examples. Maybe we should introduce also more realistic examples not only in books.

Can you suggest example exercises for such method?
It could be some exercies based on real world data like making calculations on proces of products from real shop, counting matches, drawing, building 3d models from paper.

  6. 1. What do you think about presented method?
This method is very interesting. At first it is my duty to explain something. In time of working on my phd I work at school. I work at New Media Art Department at our school on PJAIT. I work as a technical assistant in few lectures. Point is that me and my colleagues are looking for a method to teach basics of programming students from Art department.
I have to admit it is not an easy task. This method is interesting because some people realised that basics mathematics have a great influence on young people minds. Personally I support this way of thinking.
I have read about similar movement but in IT field. There is first school in the world where teachers next to one foreign language they teach basics of human computer communication. As I remember it starts form primary school. In my opinion this is similar situation. (Right now I can not find this article. I will share it in this topic when I find it).
In sum there are some platforms and courses in opensource forms where people are trying to find easy ways to implement such ideas as soon as it is possible for a young people. In my opinions the most influential organisation in this field is MIT. They share such things like MIT App Inventor and lots of more platforms to help young people to learn mathematics and computer science.

    2. Does it could be applied in polish environment?
I hope so but according to current situation in our country is not good moment on implementing such a method. It is not time for this. At first there have to be a clear situation in school. But personally i support this.

    3. Can you suggest example exercises for such method?
I am afraid I need more time for this.

    1. I share your enthusiasm , as well i think right now is not perfect moment for such initiatives. To implement such method we need stabilization and a lot of planning.

  7. 1. What do you think about presented method?
I think it is interesting method and can be very appealing to children because it depicts the abstraction of simple mathematical problems like adding, subtracting and so on. I can't remember my feelings about maths in primary school, but some say that they were asking their parents why 2 + 2 is 4 or something like that. I think these quqestions arise when children don't understand maths' abstraction. Visualising the problem is more understandable but... doesn't it make the children unaware of abstraction?

    2. Does it could be applied in polish environment?
We have a school without homeworks in Poland, so why not? But to be honest, in spite of all modern mothods I think our methods are very good. Studies say that Polish students are very intelligent and our education standards are very high (http://www.independent.co.uk/news/education/education-news/global-school-rankings-interactive-map-shows-standards-of-education-across-the-world-10247405.html). We have to work on our universities though, because currently there is no Polish university in best 500 universities in the world. But I think it's more complex problem and changing education methods won't help it.

    3. Can you suggest example exercises for such method?
Of course, it can be any word exercise, the simplest can be something like that: Jonathan has $10 in his pocket. After buying 5 apples he's left with a half of his money. But he decided to buy 2 bananas additionaly, so he ended with one fifth of the rest of the money. Can Jonathan buy a chewing gum for $1.25 for the rest of his money?

  8. 1) I work as a teacher of mathematics, I have never worked with young children. Since the beginning of the work I teach in high school. In the contemporary system too much time is wasted in early elementary school. As a result, it is too little time to discuss serious issues on next levels of education. If someone does not understand the basics of mathematics, they have problems in later stages. The main problem is bad time management. Presented methods are interesting but they need time. Probably we can find this method in Polish system of education but system need a few small changes at the beginning of education. The best way is evolution and not revolution.
    2) Yes, of course. In addition, there are a lot of cool methods using IT tools, nowadays it is very easy to visualize a lot of things. It should take action to reduce the number of pupils in classes. The teacher will have more time for the student. I usually work with groups of 25 -30 people but sometimes there is a group of 36 people, sometimes consisting of 20 people - and this is a very big difference.
    3) These are the methods of Teaching Mathematics Through Problem Solving - on the internet there are many examples. For example, this page shows presented methods for the more advanced. http://www.nais.org/Magazines-Newsletters/ITMagazine/Pages/Teaching-Mathematics-Through-Problem-Solving.aspx

  9. What do you think about presented method?

It is very intersting method. I have never teached in a school with a class full of students, but I was a math tutor for several years on various school levels (from primary school to engineering studies). When I was teaching my pupils I usually tried to draw a lot, because such way of explaining math problems was easier to understand.
In my opinion every method that includes drawing, explaining with real life examples and refering to common situations makes math easier to learn.

Does it could be applied in polish environment?

Maybe, but in my opinion the main problems in Poland are too big classes and too general aproach to students. My experience shows that everyone can understand math well, but sometimes needs different approach than the others.

Can you suggest example exercises for such method?

Hmm.. It is difficult to make up such example in a moment, especially that I did not used this method before. For sure the example should be connected with real situations.

  10. Hello, thanks for interesting topic. Unfortunately I lost track of time during Christmas and my answer is a little over deadline :).
Model Method presented in an article shows very important point. It is much easier to understand the issue when it is based on the real problem. If you try to understand an issue and you can not catch it then you will never understand the topic.

If we are talking about implementation. Partially this method is present in polish schools. As Damian W wrote, we can not replace current teaching methods by new approach. It should be addon for current, well known teaching methods.

Every method that uses colorful pictures is preferred by kids in my opinion. People understand pictures better than complex texts or etc.

  11. Ewelina – thank you very much for an interesting article. I work as a teacher and I am interested in new teaching methods. This method looks very interesting but because this is my first encounter with it I don’t understand all the details. Children generally hate maths because this is a difficult and badly taught subject . If this method is better than the actual method it should be introduced in Polish schools of course. It is difficult to make up such an example in a moment, especially that I have not used this method before.

  12. Thank you for an interesting article. This method reminds me of the way my grandpa used to explain things to me.It brings back great memories. In my opinion Polish schools are in such a bad shape that applying anything new is really difficult, but this method would certainly be very beneficial for both children and teachers. Lessons would be far less boring and undurable. Maybe more math talents would appear. As for an example of an exercise, unfortunately nothing comes to my mind right now.

  13. What do you think about presented method?

In my opinion, this is a promising method that could help many children. We should not forget that no method is useful until a kid starts learning just for his FUN. Desire to learn should come from within. Only then it yields the best results.

Does it could be applied in polish environment?

I think it would be beneficial but very hard to implement in the Polish school environment where a lot of teaching is done in a very traditional way.

Can you suggest example exercises for such method?

I would suggest more games that involve analytical thinking and are pleasurable for kids to learn.

  14. Hello, thanks for sharing this article with us. I find this method to be a combination of puzzles and geometry, a visualization of mathematical equations. For younger kids whose analytical thinking is not yet developed on such level to become adept in solving mathematical problems such a method might be beneficial. It could probably be applied in the polish educational system, however looking at how things evolve in that matter I highly doubt it. Maybe in the distant future. ;)

    1. What do you think about presented method?

I think that for some kids it might be suitable, for others not necessary so. Although I must admit, that I really like anything that makes math less abstract; I always craved something I could touch, rather than learning about abstract concepts.

    2. Does it could be applied in polish environment?

I can't see any cultural barriers here. Why not?

    3. Can you suggest example exercises for such method?

Sorry, I can't. I am not good at teaching.

It is very interesting. I need to read a bit more about it and I want to try to implement it on my lectures. I think that we always need to try different things. Even if it won’t work or we won’t like it our lives will be extended by new experience
    2. Does it could be applied in polish environment?
Yes, I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t apply. It is rather case of people that we are working with rather the society.
    3. Can you suggest example exercises for such method?
Not yet, but give me a bit of time 
