HyperCam: Hyperspectral Imaging in our phones
Would you like to become a little scientist/doctor in your everyday life?
In studies of ancient pieces of art, including paintings, books hyperspectral imaging is an indispensable tool for non-invasive examination of authenticity and hidden content of the work.
It is also an excellent tool for remote detection of environmental pollutants.
Soon everyone will be able to use their mobile phones, for example, to detect or monitor the quality of food or monitor own health. The benefits for consumers could occur in health care, such as mobile phones, which are able to check if the moles are malignant or food is edible. They could also check the authenticity of the product, or to identify users based on biometric data.
Hyperspectral imaging significantly accelerates the identification and diagnosis of skin cancer. New technology makes it easier to determine the exact shape and size of signs. Reducing device size and integrating it with a microscope can dramatically accelerate distinguish melanomas from ordinary moles while maintaining security and lowering costs. This rapid test allows for the precise boundaries of the presence of cancer cells.

- What do you think about HyperCam in everyday usage? Do you think that this technology can be as good as doctor’s diagnosis and we will no longer need to visit health clinics?
- What are other possible usage of HyperCam besides health monitoring, food quality and environment monitoring?
- If HyperCam was working 100% correctly do you think that people would use is on regular basis (multiple times every day)? Or will it remain to be just a gadget or another not useful function in our phone?
I really do hope that HyperCam will not become a substitute for doctor's appointment and diagnosis. Ordinary people did not study medicine for 10 years or so, therefore they should not diagnose themselves on their own with technical gadgets. Such possibility would cause even more damage than Doctor Google's current medical activity. Instead of going to specialist, people search Internet for disease symptoms similar to the ones they experience. Then they take medicines they should not be taking and cause unimaginable damage to their organism.
ReplyDeleteWhat's more if we use HyperCam on a daily basis, we would stuck our noses into the phones even more than we currently do. I am not sure if living in virtual world and checking each and every thing before consuming is what I desire the most. But I guess all valetudinarians on this planet would really benefit from this technical novelty.
Thank You for sharing Your opinion. I absolutely agree that nowadays people are trying to replace doctor with internet. Instead of visiting specialist they write the symptoms in Google search and look for results. This will never replace medical professional diagnosis and as You said choosing what pills they should take is very dangerous, not only because they take medicines that are not good, but because that don't cure the real disease. That's true that we are completely addicted to our phones and this option will just increase our engagement to mobile device.
DeleteWhat do you think about HyperCam in everyday usage? To Do you think that this technology can be as good as doctor's diagnosis and we will no longer need to visit health clinics?
ReplyDeleteNothing should replace the meeting with the doctor, but it can help in the initial diagnosis.
What are other possible usage of HyperCam besides health monitoring, food quality and environment monitoring?
Support for the diagnosis of small-scale production.
If HyperCam was working 100% to CORRECTLY Do you think that people would use is on regular basis (multiple times every day)? Or will it remain 'to be just a gadget or another not useful function in our phone?
What do you think about HyperCam in everyday use? Do you think that this technology can be as good as the medical diagnosis and we will no longer have to visit the clinic?
I think that as a gadget by some common and some never. Such as a QR reader.
Thank You for sharing Your opinion. I agree that it is not suppose to be a replacement of meeting with the doctor, however some people may take this gadget too seriously and avoid professional help. And on the other hand they may argue with doctors when they will have different opinion than the one shown in phone.
Delete1.What do you think about HyperCam in everyday usage? Do you think that this technology can be as good as doctor’s diagnosis and we will no longer need to visit health clinics?
ReplyDeleteI think the idea is interesting but HyperCam shouldn't be used instead of doctor's diagnosis. It can be used to check if we should visit the doctor, and rather as early warning that something might be wrong with our health. In general ther may be many benefits of making such inventions cheaper and available for everyone. Of course it should also has a guarantee of good quality because using something to check health which may not work properly is pointless.
2.What are other possible usage of HyperCam besides health monitoring, food quality and environment monitoring?
It is hard to say... Maybe it also can be used to monitor health of pets or it could be applied in some studies of universe.
3.If HyperCam was working 100% correctly do you think that people would use is on regular basis (multiple times every day)? Or will it remain to be just a gadget or another not useful function in our phone?
I think that many people would be interested in such HyperCam. Nowadays many people try to google their symptoms so HyperCam could could be used instead and give much more qualitative results. I am only afraid where they would be stored and who else could see those results.
Thank You for sharing Your opinion. Of course this is good tool for early diagnosis, checking time to time by yourself is good, but still not sufficient solution. Doctors use professional equipment and have huge knowledge when it comes to diseases, so people should definitely make appointments time to time, for their’s own health. Maybe this solution could be used to send some results to doctors for further evaluation.
DeleteI guess it might be useful for preliminary diagnosis, to show some early symptoms to the doctor and verify if it is necessary to make a real-life appointment at the doctor's office or not. It would be a great addition to online services provided by Luxmed or Medicover, except for chats with doctors and nurses. One could upload data/pictures from HyperCam and consult them with a specialist online before going to a clinic.
ReplyDeleteThank You for your opinion. That is also my opinion, that it could possibly be uploaded to doctor for further diagnosis. It could work not only in those private clinics but also in public one hopefully in future.
DeleteI reckon this HyperCam idea is a very very interesting and perspective. All our life is closely connected with technology and such kind of apps is a natural next step. Today we use smartphones generally for entertainment but monitoring our health or foods or pollutions are very very useful and fruitful and can help us and our environment. Today's doctors very often use Internet to learn about illnesses and they are looking for best solutions for their patients. Thanks to such kind of apps we save our time and we can check our health easier and quicker.
ReplyDeleteThank You for comment. Well that is true, with the passing time we will have more apps and more devices to deal with health problems. The only problem is that even if the application will find that something is wrong people very often refuse going to the doctor and some of them are still having troubles with smartphones.
Delete1. What do you think about HyperCam in everyday usage?
ReplyDeleteAt the moment I don't think they found the right selling point of this technology. If it was just what they are advertising, I wouldn't pay more for the phone with camera able to capture wide spectrum of electromagnetic waves.
Should they implement something like night vision, that's a different story. However, I won't pay more than 5% of original price. Smartphones are still too expensive; I don't think paying more for a gadget really makes sense.
1'. Do you think that this technology can be as good as doctor’s diagnosis and we will no longer need to visit health clinics?
No. It could be used for tele-medicine, i.e. you won't have to visit your doctor's office, but for the time being diagnosis should still be left to practitioners.
2. What are other possible usage of HyperCam besides health monitoring, food quality and environment monitoring?
I believe it just depends on the spectrum... If they are able to capture infrared, it may have many applications. Cheap thermal vision camera... Well, that sounds great!
Night vision, which I've already mentioned... I can't really think of anything else; some other applications would require appropriate "light" source.
3. If HyperCam was working 100% correctly do you think that people would use is on regular basis (multiple times every day)? Or will it remain to be just a gadget or another not useful function in our phone?
I think it is nothing more than a gadget. However, I am open to be proved wrong.
Thank You for the comment. That is true that smartphones are still terribly expensive, especially iPhones and Samsung new phones. For the majority of people paying over 3000zł for phone is not affordable. I think that for the producers introducing new technology and exaggerating that this will help to make our health better is another great marketing slogan to make more money. The other problem is that elderly people have problems with using even the simplest mobile phone and I cannot imagine my grandmother using smartphone with some fancy app to scan her body when she can barely walk... Of course we cannot base only on some articles, but maybe this technology is more complex that it is written here.
Delete1. What do you think about HyperCam in everyday usage? Do you think that this technology can be as good as doctor’s diagnosis and we will no longer need to visit health clinics?
ReplyDeleteI think that this technology can ba a supplementary addendum to doctors work. Not its replacement. This is because many diseases have common symptoms and most of times correct diagnosis is only thanks to doctors experience or intuition.
2. What are other possible usage of HyperCam besides health monitoring, food quality and environment monitoring?
As mentioned earlier by colleagues the possible use might be health monitoring of pets.
3. If HyperCam was working 100% correctly do you think that people would use is on regular basis (multiple times every day)? Or will it remain to be just a gadget or another not useful function in our phone?
All depends on citcumstances. People who has to minitor their health on a regular basis would use this for health check purposes. Some people will still use it as gadgets.
Thank You for commenting. I think that using this technology for monitoring health of pets is also a nice idea, however it is good to visit vet the same like people visit doctors. Still I have some doubts about people using it on regular basis because if they don't visit doctors regularly how they can use app regularly.
DeleteWhat do you think about HyperCam in everyday usage? Do you think that this technology can be as good as doctor’s diagnosis and we will no longer need to visit health clinics?
ReplyDeleteIn my honest opinion, I wouldn't buy it or pay for it extra. We can try to predict the future, and find potential customers for this technology. Maybe military or spies? However, the general idea does not appeal to me.
What are other possible usage of HyperCam besides health monitoring, food quality and environment monitoring?
Those are good examples of the possible usage, even though I hardly believe it will succeed.
If HyperCam was working 100% correctly do you think that people would use is on regular basis (multiple times every day)? Or will it remain to be just a gadget or another not useful function in our phone?
I'm afraid it will end as another not useful feature. Maybe I'm not the target for it. Who knows?
Thank You for the comment. You first mentioned that it might be used in military or by spies so it is important to predict the other usage by people who want to cause harm to others. There is always a way to use feature in completely different purpose than it was intended to use.
Delete1. What do you think about HyperCam in everyday usage? Do you think that this technology can be as good as doctor’s diagnosis and we will no longer need to visit health clinics?
ReplyDeleteI think that this technology can be helpful in doctor’s diagnosis but will not replace doctors wor.
2. What are other possible usage of HyperCam besides health monitoring, food quality and environment monitoring?
For example, in future it can be used in any activities which will required night vision.
3. If HyperCam was working 100% correctly do you think that people would use is on regular basis (multiple times every day)? Or will it remain to be just a gadget or another not useful function in our phone?
I think that it will be a gadget for the moment. In future I can evolve …We will see.
Thank You for the comment, yes now it seems more like a gadget but within few year it might be a standard in every phone.
DeleteHey, thanks for this interesting find. With time this will most likely gain in popularity and consumer products could be eqquiped with it.
ReplyDeleteAs for your questions:
1. It really depends on the trial cases and how well it will perform in automatic detection of various abnormalities. I guess that in the beginning it won't be better than a regular doctor but later it might surpass one.
2. I can't really think of many at the moment, however I am more than certain that it will find several more uses. :)
3. If it was working 100% then I guess people could be using it on daily basis as routine to check up on their health status. That would also decreases the lengths of queues to the outpatient clinics.
Thank You for the comment. I don't think it will change anything in decreasing the lengths of queues to the outpatient clinics. Still a lot of people will use normal visit of the doctor.
DeleteThank you for an interesting article. In my opinion, nothing can replace contact with the doctor (other opinion can be held by the Ministry of Health - for financial reasons) However, these types of applications may suggest whether to go to a dermatologist or oncologist. Of course, another option is to propose that this system for the animal treatment. Regarding the last question, even with a small error (at most 1%) it is sure to be a group of people who use it regularly.
ReplyDeleteThank You for the comment. Of course there will always be people who just love technology and want to use it in every possible area of life, but they should not skip standard doctor appointments.
DeleteWhat do you think about HyperCam in everyday usage? Do you think that this technology can be as good as doctor’s diagnosis and we will no longer need to visit health clinics?
ReplyDeleteDetecting health problems with HyperCam can be a good reason to schedule a doctor appointment. I don't think just because we use HyperCam we can eliminate human expertise from the equation.
What are other possible usage of HyperCam besides health monitoring, food quality and environment monitoring?
It's hard to say I really don't have any additional ideas as health monitoring, food quality and environment monitoring are rather wide areas.
If HyperCam was working 100% correctly do you think that people would use is on regular basis (multiple times every day)? Or will it remain to be just a gadget or another not useful function in our phone?
If it will gain production level of usage I think many enterprises will investigate application of it in order to lower the costs of their day to day operations. So it I think the usage will be implied on users. At this stage we can see early adopters using it as a gadget like OCR with scanners years ago now we use it in many areas and we don't really think about it.
Thank You for the comment. Yes human expertise is really important I don't think that it is possible to replace human doctor with any app, machine or robot is possible. Maybe there will be more complex tests that will check our whole body at once.
DeleteWe are far from replacing our doctors. Even if the technology is better than described. It should be used as a consulting tool/element that creates an alarm for us, it should provide extra information that will help us but we always should consult such thing with a doctor. Call me "old fashion" but I believe that our experience is much more valuable than everything that we can use a machine. It always should be combined in such matter.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure that such technology will be used only by some part of society. Even now we have a very big access to different type tools/information that can help us to be healthy and look how many overweighed people we still have. We should have access to such technology but it will be only an option for some of us.
Thank You for the comment. I don't think that in medicine we can replace human with any technology. Of course it is helpful to invent new solutions but it is not the same. I also believe in experience and machine learning is not the case.
DeleteWhat do you think about HyperCam in everyday usage? Do you think that this technology can be as good as doctor’s diagnosis and we will no longer need to visit health clinics?
ReplyDeleteSuch technology would most certainly help identify and prevent various diseases and will be a useful doctor's tool. I would not agree however that it could eventually replace individual's doctor's diagnosis. Every case is different and even given the same symptoms, a diagnosis might differ drastically for different individuals based on a broader context of previous health history, genes, lifestyle etc. Hence, I would say, that a diagnosis is sometimes a subjective matter, that cannot be based solemnly on symptoms.
What are other possible usage of HyperCam besides health monitoring, food quality and environment monitoring?
As mentioned, such technology is extremely useful for analysis of artworks that require to be taken with great care in order to prevent any damage. For example: paintings, old manuscripts, objects from ancient times found by archeologists. Such objects often have significant scientific role and could help discover history if it was possible to analyze them without instrusion.
If HyperCam was working 100% correctly do you think that people would use is on regular basis (multiple times every day)? Or will it remain to be just a gadget or another not useful function in our phone?
I think that such technology could be used on a daily basis. For example, when going for groceries, it could be used to quickly scan a product, determine its ingredients, quality, compare price and immediately influence buyer's decision.
Thank You for the comment. I think that it is the most useful right now in art and food detection as You mentioned. Sometimes especially with the exotic fruits we don't know how they should look like or smell when they are ready to eat so this app could be very helpful.
DeleteWhat do you think about HyperCam in everyday usage? Do you think that this technology can be as good as doctor’s diagnosis and we will no longer need to visit health clinics?
ReplyDeleteI think it might be usefull, but it is difficult to determine how popular it will become. I am sure it will not replace a visit in a health clinic, but can be a great tool for telemedicine purpose. When we cannot see our doctor directly, we may use it to check and send our examination results, so they could be analyzed by the doctor.
What are other possible usage of HyperCam besides health monitoring, food quality and environment monitoring?
For sure they are, but nothing comes to my mind in this moment.
If HyperCam was working 100% correctly do you think that people would use is on regular basis (multiple times every day)? Or will it remain to be just a gadget or another not useful function in our phone?
Probably it depends on a person and a situation. For example in the parts of the world where doctor is not available it might be broadly used instead of direct examination by the doctor. But for example in the cities, especially elderly people would prefer to go the the clinic rather than learning and using a new technology.
I agree with you, I cannot imagine my gradparents using a smartphone to scan their body and check their state of health. They have problems using UPC pilot with a very limited number of buttons, so there is no way they could use advanced technology tools instead of going to a doctor's office. But maybe we will be "technically skilled grannies and grandpas" and we will use such gadgets on a daily basis. Who knows.
DeleteThank You for the comment. I don't think that it will become popular, people don't put to much energy in monitoring their's health because they think that they will always be healthy and young but unfortunately it is not true. We should take care from our early years to eventually cure problems at the beginning.
Delete1. What do you think about HyperCam in everyday usage? Do you think that this technology can be as good as doctor’s diagnosis and we will no longer need to visit health clinics?
ReplyDeleteI don’t think so because of the variety of the diseases. Viruses and bacteria mutate every year causing new ailments. I think that HyperCam can be used in basic diagnosis only. Moreover it can be a helpful support for doctors and may even detect diseases at the very beginning.
2. What are other possible usage of HyperCam besides health monitoring, food quality and environment monitoring?
Nowadays HyperCam is used in many areas of life inter alia in crime detection. It speeds up police actions. HyperCam is used to detect microtraces of specific organic substances or chemical.
3. If HyperCam was working 100% correctly do you think that people would use is on regular basis (multiple times every day)? Or will it remain to be just a gadget or another not useful function in our phone?
It depends on particular person. Such measurement shouldn’t take a lot of time so it is very likely that it may be in regular use. In my point of view our health is the most important in our life so if there is such possibility as a quick and free health monitoring we should use it. It can protect us from many health problems.
Thank You for the comment. Yes the more complex problems will not be detected by HyperCam. I think that maybe more complex devices will be popular and people would possibly buy it but only to monitor some beauty spots is not enough to persuade people to buy. Especially that melanoma is not as dangerous as other kinds of cancer.
DeleteI agree with Dawid. I have heard about technologies, which will be a valuable replacement for standard doctor visit. Nowadays technology gives us other ways to check our health. Private consultations with doctors in a chat room or etc. There are a thousands of websites about health care, where we describe disease symptoms and we receive diagnosis. I am sceptic for this kind of health care protection, because physical visit in for example hospital gives additional input for doctor. He can touch us, ask other questions and check our illness history.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest I think that the technology should be additional input for diagnosis. It gives positive impact and help to set proper method of treatment. What do you think, does a doctor like when patient tells “hi, I have a flu and need prescription with ... “?
Thank You for the comment. I think that neither chat rooms or some forums in the internet will replace standard visit. Exactly the physical visit gives much more because we may not notice something or something seems to be normal for us but doctor will know that it is sign of illness. Of course people tend to cure themselves but usually it only make more harm to them.
DeleteHello, thanks for the articles.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you think about HyperCam in everyday usage? Do you think that this technology can be as good as doctor’s diagnosis and we will no longer need to visit health clinics?
I think that this technology will never replace a doctor. Of course, it may be helpful in some areas. Nonetheless, It should not be the only source of knowlegde. Valetudinarians will be probably the target.
What are other possible usage of HyperCam besides health monitoring, food quality and environment monitoring?
Unfortunately, I cannot figure out any other areas. Everything was mentioned in the discussion - health, paintings, food quality and crime detection.
If HyperCam was working 100% correctly do you think that people would use is on regular basis (multiple times every day)? Or will it remain to be just a gadget or another not useful function in our phone?
I think it won't be used in a daily basis and it is more likely that it will become a gadget.
Thank You for the comment. We all agree that it is not sufficient to replace a doctor. It will probably stay as a gadget or the app that people use once and it became boring so everyone forget that it even existed. Maybe the technology will be more complex but still people will not be able to detect all health issues by themselves.
DeleteWhat do you think about HyperCam in everyday usage? Do you think that this technology can be as good as doctor’s diagnosis and we will no longer need to visit health clinics?
ReplyDeleteDefinitely HyperCam can support research and diagnosis, but I am far away from eliminating a doctors from this chain. But surely it can speed up and increase the accuracy of diagnosis.
What are other possible usage of HyperCam besides health monitoring, food quality and environment monitoring?
I think hypercam can be used to detect if oil painting is fake or not.
If HyperCam was working 100% correctly do you think that people would use is on regular basis (multiple times every day)? Or will it remain to be just a gadget or another not useful function in our phone?
Maybe in reasonable prince it will be nice gadget, but if they offer it with subscription package like Braster I think it will be to expensive.
To be honest I think that the technology should be additional input for diagnosis. It gives positive impact and help to set proper method of treatment. What do you think, does a doctor like when patient tells “hi, I have a flu and need prescription with ... “?
