I wish to present a paper about the topic of crowdsourcing from a slightly different perspective. Usually crowdsourcing use money or other specific benefits to encourage people to take part in the process. This time authors presents a curiosty driven crowdsourcing to collect the data about aurora borealis. They created website and mobile app which allows participants to
participate in developing an early warning system through space weather and the beauty of the aurora boreali. They described the innovation of a crowdsourced early warning system that uses
aurora sightings to nowcast solar activity. They used social media data as well. A time series comparison of the global strength of the aurora was strongly correlated with the number of tweets related to auroral sightings. That is, gathering and processing social media data can enable a near real-time indicator of auroral activity. They showed that highly motived citizens that document the rare activity as aurora can have large impact of other citizen awarness. This research can be extended for other events.

1. For which other purposes this kind of application can be used for?
2. Do you now any other interesting ways of encouraging people to get involved into crowdsourcing?
3. Have you ever participate in such kind of activity?
4. Do you use crowdsourcing in your research?
1. For which other purposes this kind of application can be used for?
ReplyDeleteI think that any medical related purposes might be using crowdsourcing. Especially genetical data would be useful, however I am not sure how to use it when it comes to RODO. I think that also in psychological diseases to check mental health. I am surprised that they called it with such name, since for me it is not really related to traditional meaning.
2. Do you now any other interesting ways of encouraging people to get involved into crowdsourcing?
I think that if they were given something for free it would work. For instance in Poland You could get results of your genetical predispositions to cancer of could you had to pay for it, but significantly smaller amount than in any other place. It was relatively cheap and you had to wait for enough people to participate, since it was cheaper to perform all necessary test with higher amount. It was also co-financed by European Union. Not many people heard about it, basically only you can be informed about that in cancer clinic, but it would be great to inform other people as well. I think that standard way of promotion especially in clinics would work.
3. Have you ever participate in such kind of activity?
No I did not.
4. Do you use crowdsourcing in your research?
No I do not use it.
Thank you for your comment. Do you have any idea how to use crowsourcing in genetics? How it can be used to predict cancer? I think that if crowdsourcing can be used for so dfferent purposes like aurora boreali and cancer prediction it could have infinite number of applications.
DeleteWhat do you think the traditional meaning of crowdsourcing is?
1. For which other purposes this kind of application can be used for?
ReplyDeleteVery interesting assumptions. I agree with Cezary. In medicine, yes,
but where else? Perhaps there would be some method of diagnosing, for
example, planned terrorist attacks or data server failures? I do not
have more ideas at the moment.
2. Do you now any other interesting ways of encouraging people to get
involved into crowdsourcing?
Nowadays, young people are "wading" on this type of activity. It's
enough to watch how the drmowe games are going through, during which
you have to watch the ads. Maybe instead of translation ads or other
tasks?
3. Have you ever participate in such kind of activity?
No, I didn't.
4. Do you use crowdsourcing in your research?
No, I don't use it in my research.
Thanks for your input. Yes it can be used to aware people of terrorist and I think its already is. For example people can post on facebook that they are safe.
DeleteFor me it's quite exotic, but still interesting. I have doubts about its ongoing reliability - for now 'everybody is on social media', but this fad may pass. Passive data collection won't be so effective in that situation.
ReplyDelete1. For which other purposes this kind of application can be used for?
I guess mostly for what it has been used so far - measuring sentiments for investment purposes. It may be used to measure education levels and awareness of certain phenomena. Early warning is also definitely in that area.
2. Do you now any other interesting ways of encouraging people to get involved into crowdsourcing?
Giving them a useful service for free, with a possibility to gain exposure (fame) by joining the effort. I don't want to endorse any specific company, but for the sake of argument I'd mention https://airly.eu/ - a distributed network of air quality sensors operated by local communities or private people.
3. Have you ever participated in such kind of activity?
No, not consciously. But sometimes solving CAPTCHA is actually a form of participation. So I'm not sure. As for social media, I have a small footprint there.
4. Do you use crowdsourcing in your research?
Not on that kind of scale of course, but actually yes. At the company where I work we have engaged managers, leaders and business people in image labeling for Deep Learning classifier training and test data. I have personally coordinated one of a few such events. We used a custom web application and passed links to it via IM.
Thanks for your comment. Air quallity is important topic nowadays because people want to invest into their health.
DeleteDeep learning is a main realease of crowd sourcing as it needs a lot of data to be usefull.
1. For which other purposes this kind of application can be used for?
ReplyDeleteIt comes to my mind, first of all, to detect the occurrence of diseases. But also the detection of natural hazards if early warning systems fail.
2. Do you now any other interesting ways of encouraging people to get involved into crowdsourcing?
The best form is to offer something in return. Nowadays, I think that the most interesting thing is to offer an application or service that will be useful for the user, but will also give him the awareness that it is part of a larger project. I don't know if this is a good example, but here comes the application "Yanosik", which is used to report patrols of the police but also threats on the road.
3. Have you ever participate in such kind of activity?
If you consider the "Yanosik" application as a crowdsourcing then yes.
4. Do you use crowdsourcing in your research?
I have never had the opportunity to use it in my projects.
Thanks for your comment. Yes, I think i t may be used to dectect natural hazards like floods etc.
DeleteI think Yanosik is such kind of crowdsourcing application where people can share the data just for free.
1. For which other purposes this kind of application can be used for?
ReplyDeleteI think, the crowdsourcing we can use in: medicine, distributed computing, artificial intelligence, environmental research, weather conditions and other.
2. Do you now any other interesting ways of encouraging people to get involved into crowdsourcing?
Yes, for example a polish science project RADIOACTIVE@HOME.
Some information about this project You can find on this site:
http://radioactiveathome.org/boinc/
3. Have you ever participate in such kind of activity?
Yes, I’m a volunteer for BOINC projects. BOINC is the free platform lets you help cutting-edge science research using your computer. I encourage You to participate in BOINC projects. You can choose some projects and run this on Your computer or other device with Android.
4. Do you use crowdsourcing in your research?
No, at the moment I only participate in other projects not mine.
Thanks for all examples of applications. You are rigth there are plenty of them.
DeleteThanks for sharing the project you are participating in. I thnk this is important thing to know about radiation.
1. Crowdsourcing can be used when looking for new ways to solve problems, e.g. the British government has offered awards of between £10,000 and £20,000 to every citizen who will develop a practical method to determine the exact longitude of a vessel. This is particularly good when the problem is new.
ReplyDelete2. The best way to encourage cooperation is financial remuneration.
3. No
4. No
Thanks for your input. I agree that it can be used in that ways. Thats a nice prize and iteresting problem.
Delete1. For which other purposes this kind of application can be used for?
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, I would like to say that this is a very interesting topic, which I have very limited knowledge about, and it's really great that you brought this subject up. I quess that most obvious choices for me is medicine, climate changes and weather research.
2. Do you now any other interesting ways of encouraging people to get involved into crowdsourcing?
The most obvious ones is giving something for free and giving something in return for input and information. People love gifts and love to get something for free or at least they love to think that it's free of charge.
3. Have you ever participate in such kind of activity?
No, not really.
4. Do you use crowdsourcing in your research?
No, not really.
Thanks for your comment. How would you apply crowdsourcing to detecting climate change? Is it possible to notice such slow process in that way?
Delete1. For which other purposes this kind of application can be used for?
ReplyDeleteI think that this kind of application can be used for eg bird watching and migration. Another example of application is the monitoring of traffic accidents.
2. Do you now any other interesting ways of encouraging people to get involved into crowdsourcing?
Offering them a product at an attractive price or for free or a percentage share in profits depending on the copies sold. Another option is to offer money for help in the project.
3. Have you ever participate in such kind of activity?
No, but maybe in the future I will participate.
4. Do you use crowdsourcing in your research?
No, but maybe in the future I will use.
1. For which other purposes this kind of application can be used for?
ReplyDeleteI think first of all it is medicine, weather changes, financial operations, the military sphere. I think that the early warning system is very useful for military purposes - as it can inform about the movements of a resident. Also, you can track pushing cyclones and stuff.
2. Do you now any other interesting ways of encouraging people to get involved into crowdsourcing?
I think that the society has matured to do such things - for free. But still, I think you need motivation. Perhaps, some benefits from the state, for example with the help in medicine.
3. Have you ever participate in such kind of activity?
No I did not.
4. Do you use crowdsourcing in your research?
No I do not use it.
1. For which other purposes this kind of application can be used for?
ReplyDeleteIt was the first time when I've heard about this. Thank you for the article. I've read the one with great pleasure. When I was younger, I thought about a sensor's system, which would cover the Earth with sensors 300 meters apart and forming a network. It was a futuristic idea then, but now I see it works ;)
2. Do you know any other interesting ways of encouraging people to get involved in crowdsourcing?
I think about the medical system, which could be a good one for providing real information about pandemonium based on this solution. How do you think is it a good idea?
3. Have you ever participate in such kind of activity?
I think all of we participate in such kind of activity using, e.g. Google maps. Everyone provides information about this where he/she is etc. This kind of information gives us a system, which controls traffic jams.
4. Do you use crowdsourcing in your research?
Not yet, but I see a great opportunity in this. I hope to do it. I suppose you use it and I am keen on your research then.
Greetings,
ReplyDeletecrowdsourcing phenomena is a very interesting subject indeed.
1. For which other purposes this kind of application can be used for?
As mentioned in the article, the main application, in my opinion, would be Early Warning Systems for crises, not only aurora borealis events. Hashtag listening is also being used in social media monitoring (mainly for tracking the mentions about the brand).
2. Do you know any other interesting ways of encouraging people to get involved in crowdsourcing?
SETI@home, for example, gives you an opportunity to take a part in searching for footprints of extrasolar civilizations :)
3. Have you ever participate in such kind of activity?
Yes, in the early 00's, I had installed the SETI software, however, I had to uninstall it because of lack of RAM :)
4. Do you use crowdsourcing in your research?
No.
1. For which other purposes this kind of application can be used for?
ReplyDeleteI think that crowdsourcing can be also used in psychology – to find out more about human behaviour.
2. Do you now any other interesting ways of encouraging people to get involved into crowdsourcing?
In my opinion the continuous raising of the awareness of the responsibility for the common good and the society development should be enough.
3. Have you ever participated in such kind of activity?
No, I haven’t participated (at least not consciously).
4. Do you use crowdsourcing in your research?
No, I don’t use crowdsourcing in my research.
1. The first option that comes to my mind is the translation of comics or movies on the principle of fans for fans. Another option may be companies' collection of opinions, for example banks, about some functionality and improving it on the basis of customer feedback. Also to incorporate innovations. Additional loose thought: maintaining security in your area. We report a dangerous event in the application. If more people notice something disturbing, the police could quickly deal with such a case, because they would have access to information about the incident.
ReplyDelete2. Certainly money. However, often the idea of doing something interesting and passionate, helping others is rewarding in itself. An interesting option to encourage crowdsourcing are discounts on products or functionalities that we help create. As in the case of crowdfunding, when supporting creators with a sum of money we get their finished product for free or at a minimum price.
3. Unfortunately not.
4. No.
1. I think that crowdsourcing has lots of purposes of application but I focus on medicine and artificial intelligence. Crowdsourcing allows Internet users to collect data and exchange their experience. Nowadays, there are lots of unknown diseases all over the world and people can share their experience and analyze and collect information about these diseases. They perhaps are able to develop the method of diagnosing or prediction of the diseases. The second appliance which I mentioned about is artificial intelligence. It is very fast developing topic and it can be applied in crowdsourcing similarly to medicine. The big companies like Intel still work on developing AI algorithms, but lots of people are interested in this topic and they also could have an idea how to improve some areas and algorithms of AI. As you know, Internet connects people.
ReplyDelete2. In my opinion the people like to receive something for their help so offering something to encourage people to get involved into crowdourcing seems to be reasonable. Some people say that “ I do something selflessly’ but subconsciously, we like when somebody offers us something for our work. Then, people feel that they are part of the project. I do not say that they have to get money for their work because there are lots of ways to appreciate.
3. No I have not participated in crowdsourcing yet but I hope I will. It seems to be a nice idea. Currently I am a member of the travelling groups in social media, e.g.: Discover Thailand, where the data about this country is collected. People write about weather, places which you should visit, give advices etc, but I think it is not enough to say that it is crowdsourcing.
4. No I do not use crowdsourcing in my research, but I hope I will have an opportunity to use it in the future.
As it's about collecting a data it may have numerous use cases. Currently I'm thinking about documenting events from multiple perspectives.
ReplyDeleteGoogle captcha is a good example of crowdsourcing. They provided the free and valuable tool for website developers to protect their forms from bots and at the same time let Google collect training data for OCR system.
I haven't participated in any crowdsourcing except the Google captcha and similar that I may even not be aware of.
1. Nowadays a big problem is smog. I didn’t find on the Internet a Polish pollution map, which could be based on crowdsourcing. Scientists could prepare a better map of pollution in Polish cities (the cheapest PM 2.5 Analizator Tester smog sensors cost 20 dollars) and collect more accurate data about that.
ReplyDelete2. In stack overflow there is a strong encouragement - based on popularity in this programmers community, additionally some companies are looking for employees on that portal, so that is an example of great encouragement.
Coursera has a similar way. There are many of students who take part in courses, they also help with finding solutions in another participants problems via forums.
3. Yes I have - stack overflow and Coursera.
4. Not literally, but I am using data collected from volunteers during brain exam.
1. For which other purposes this kind of application can be used for?
ReplyDeleteThere are many different types and applications to crowdsourcing. Well-known services such as Uber, Airbnb, and Wikipedia are examples of crowdsourcing. Businesses can crowdsource ideas as a method of brainstorming, solving technical problems, and getting ideas from field experts that they otherwise would not be able to access. Businesses can also crowdsource data collection to build datasets based on information provided by the participants. They can also crowdsource skills, some common examples include transcription, design, and document review.
Generally, having a larger pool of participants increases the size of the dataset, which allows for more in-depth data analysis.
2. Do you now any other interesting ways of encouraging people to get involved into crowdsourcing?
There are roughly two sorts of rewards you can use to encourage the crowd: intrinsic e.g. purpose, self-realisation, and extrinsic e.g. money.
Research shows that 'crowdworkers' who are intrinsically motivated are more likely to deliver quality. However, they will only contribute to tasks within their sphere of interest and their output is difficult to manage.
Extrinsically motivated people can deliver quality as well as long as the output criteria are clear. And this group is much larger.
For most online business processes extrinsic rewards are the way to go.
3. Have you ever participate in such kind of activity?
Yes, like most of us by using Uber, or Wikipedia
4. Do you use crowdsourcing in your research?
No I do not use it.
1. For which other purposes this kind of application can be used for?
ReplyDeleteAuthors mention earthquakes. What else? I don't know, maybe some epidemiology data gathering?
2. Do you now any other interesting ways of encouraging people to get involved into crowdsourcing?
I'm not really into crowdsourcing, but I think competition can be other powerful way to encourage participation. Other can be chance of fame (I know it works for comet hunters of Zooniverse).
3. Have you ever participate in such kind of activity?
In the old days, I did quite a bit of work for Distributed Proofreaders. I just like reading. And donated some computing power to Folding@home.
4. Do you use crowdsourcing in your research?
I don't. Unfortunately this kind of participation does not fit my niche.
1. For which other purposes this kind of application can be used for?
ReplyDeleteIt could be used to crowdsourced survilance.
2. Do you now any other interesting ways of encouraging people to get involved into crowdsourcing?
Every crowdsource solution need to deliver value to it's users. So users should feel that giving something they are taking something back. for example big crowdsourced data could give us secure environment
3. Have you ever participate in such kind of activity?
2. No, unfortunately I did not have such opportunity.
4. Do you use crowdsourcing in your research?
3. I think crowdsourcing could help me with my research but I unfortunately people do not like to share data.
1. For which other purposes this kind of application can be used for?
ReplyDeleteFor sure to inform about traffic situation. Moreover for studying phenomena whose effects are visible all over the globe (eg the greenhouse effect and other)
2. Do you now any other interesting ways of encouraging people to get involved into crowdsourcing?
Showing the benefits of working together should motivate them to take similar actions in the future. Each of us would help if he saw a goal that is real/needed and impossible to achieve by acting alone.
3. Have you ever participate in such kind of activity?
I don't have possibility yet, but I don't exclude such a possibility - I am open to proposals for such cooperation.
4. Do you use crowdsourcing in your research?
No, but I thought about it. If I find any problem which could be resolved in this way for sure I will try.
It can be used for good purposes and we’re always happy to hear such news like this one mentioned in the article, but I would be afraid of improper usages, for example political. Unfortunately we can’t exclude such risk.
ReplyDeleteAlthough Polish people do not lack initiative, brilliant ideas and the will to support creative creators, the development of crowdfunding is limited by legal regulations. Although crowdfunding is fully legal in Poland, it is worth using technical and legal solutions offered by special portals, which in most cases provide protection for both project authors and people who support good ideas through them.
I found Polish crowdsourcing example portals:
• beesfund.com - share and non-share crowdfunding;
• collaborativeprojekt.pl - non-faculty crowdfunding;
• wspólnicy.pl - share crowdfunding;
• crowdangels.pl - share crowdfunding;
• conda.eu - crowdinvesting;
• polakpotrafi.pl - various types of projects, only non-faculty crowdfunding possible;
• megatotal.pl - music projects;
• wspieramkulture.pl - cultural projects;
• ideowi.pl - share crowdfunding;
• wspieram.to - various types of projects, only non-faculty crowdfunding possible.
I haven’t participate in such activity and I haven’t used it in my research, but now I have to think it over more carefully than before, thank you Katarzyna :-)
