Week 7 - 29.05.2017 - 4.06.2017 - Legal aspects of cybesecurity

Hi everyone,
I would like to provoke discussion concerning all the common fields between cybersecurity and its legal aspects. It is interesting for me because of special reason: many, many years ago ;-) apart from computer science on Technical University, I’ve also managed to graduate from law faculty at Warsaw University and I am certified legal counsel.

I recommend to review:

I expect you are more than me prepared to such discussion from technical / technological point of view and this is why I am really interested in your opinions in following subjects:

  1. Would you agree with this article, that these are the aspects you need to understand?
  2. Are there any other aspects (not only legal), which need to be taking into consideration in this subject, instead or additionally?
  3. What are technological issues which a lawyer needs to understand, when he wants to be helpful in solving cybersecurity problems?
  4. Do you find legal tools useful in ensuring cybersecurity?
  5. Have you got any experience with cases, where legal tools were used to solve cybersecurity problems? If yes: what was the result? If not: can you imagine and describe probable situation?
  6. What is the most optimal configuration of technological and legal tools to achieve extremely tight protection?

Thank you for all the answers in advance,
best regards.

Week 7 - 29.05-04.06.2017: Planes Without Pilots

Hello,

I've found very interesting article about automation in aviation industry.

Groups of engineers are working on inventing a robot that would be capable to replace human pilot in a plane. It turns that even nowadays pilots don't have a lot of work to do. The intense time is only during take off and landing, for the rest of flight time they have autopilot on duty. On the other hand automation in air traffic control is also in progress.  Air business wants to save a lot of money on labor costs.

1 What do you think about automation in aviation industry? Could it be perfectly safe?

2 What are the risks?

3 Would you buy a ticket for flight without any human pilot?

Week 7 - 29.05-04.06.2017: Validation of a Low-Cost, Portable EEG System for ERP Research

Dear all,

I would like to present article: Badcock, Nicholas A., et al. "Validation of the Emotiv EPOC® EEG gaming system for measuring research quality auditory ERPs." PeerJ 1 (2013): e38. (http://journal.frontiersin.org/article/10.3389/fnins.2017.00109/full)

In recent years there has been an increase in the number of portable low-cost electroencephalographic (EEG) systems available to researchers. MUSE EEG system is one of such example. Improvements in the quality of low cost portable EEG systems such as the MUSE provide an excellent opportunity for researchers to improve their ability to conduct field and/or clinical research. In the article authors demonstrate availability to quantify the N200, P300, and reward positivist ERP components with a MUSE EEG system in two experimental paradigms that together were completed in under 10 min. Their method utilized a single computer and they did not have to rely on the use of event-markers.

1. What do you think about usage of low cost systems in your research?

2. Have you ever tried to use low cost devices during your studies? If yest, do you meet any limitations?

3. Do you know any examples of low cost devices used in academical researches?

Kind regards,

Marcin

Week 6 - 22.05-28.05.2017 AI and Opinion Mining

Hello,
This week I wish to share with you an article about opinion mining:

The article describes what opinion mining is used for and how complex it could be. Opinion mining finds application in wide range of different fields like e-commerce, business, social media, analysis and each creates new challenges. Authors also give an example how it could be used in predicting the stock market. It is interesting how opinions shared by users of web forum discussion can reflect the stock market.

1. What do you think about opinion mining? Does it create more opportunities or dangers?
2. Why do much of current opinion mining research focus on products, movie reviews than on opinions in social or geopolitical context? Is it less important? More difficult? Other reasons?
3. Do you think opinion mining of online content is more efficient than a traditional survey? Why/Why not?

Week 6 - 22.05-28.05.2017 Adapting and Using Scrum in a Software Research and Development Laboratory => A Brief Summary of One of the Most Popular Management Techniques Used When Dealing with IT Projects

Last week there was presented a very interesting article on various project management methodologies. I would like to discuss one of them in particular, that is the Scrum methodology which is one of the most popular techniques used nowadays in companies  dealing with IT services and products.  I found an interesting text pertaining to this subject prepared by Brasilian scholars, as well as a short article from Forbes. I hope you find them interesting and useful.

Below there are some questions I would like you to consider in our discussion with regards to the articles and the subject itself.

1. What do you think of Scrum methodology? Is it a useful tool in dealing with IT products? Do you find project management methodologies important or do you think that they are just "art for the art's sake"?
2. Do you think that IT specialists should be trained in various project management methodologies or is it better when a project is led by a person with no IT background, but a profound knowledge of management techniques?
3. Could you comment on 12 Agile Manifesto principles? Which of them do you find most important and why?

Week 5 - 15.05 - 21.05.2017 A Rodent Model of Dynamic Facial Reanimation Using Functional Electrical Stimulation

Hello,

This week I want to share with you the article I've referred during Bioengineering class (some of you who also attended may be familiar with it). It describes modern and very innovative technique of face prosthetics in case of partial paralysis. In the article you will find description of the, so called, "rodent model" of functional electrical stimulation system, which aims to mimic muscle movement from one side of face and transfer it to another (the paralysed one).

http://journal.frontiersin.org/article/10.3389/fnins.2017.00193/full

There are several questions that kept coming to my mind when I was reading this article. Some of them I want to ask you:

1. Even though the benefits for a human race are obvious, do you feel discomfort when thinking of animals used in experiments like this?
2. Can we really call the presented solution a model? I've always imagined a "model" as "computer model", or something artificial in a different sense. But a "rodent model"? Doesn't it sound weird?
3. Technology is advancing so fast, especially in the field of brain-prosthesis interfaces. Do you know anybody who needs or uses such technology? If so, what is their opinion?

Week 5 - 15.05-21.05.2017 - Comparing Data Science Project Management Methodologies via a Controlled Experiment

Hello Everyone.
This week I would like to talk about Project Management techniques. I think everyone has participated in a project or has led one.
I would like you to go quickly through this article:
Comparing Data Science Project Management Methodologies via a Controlled Experiment
Data Science is a field where a stress is put on improving the techniques available to analyze data. According to the article there has been much less focus on how people should work together on a data science project. Authors reported results of an experiment comparing four different methodologies to manage and coordinate a data science project. The results of the experiment revealed there are significant differences based on the used methodology. It turns out that Agile Kanban methodology was the most effective, however, an Agile Scrum methodology was the least effective.
Authors used students as subjects in a controlled experiment.
They tried to understand if one process is better than the others. They focused on two main issues:
1) How should one compare different project methodologies (is project output the only criteria)?
2) Is one project management methodology better than the other methodologies?

What is your experience in project management? Do you recognize any efficient techniques? Does it depend on the subject of a particular project?
Do you think that the output of a project should be the only criteria of measuring it?
What are the main challenges in data science project management?

Week 4 - 08.05-14.05.2017 - Simulating Trends in Artificial Influence Networks

Source http://jasss.soc.surrey.ac.uk/19/1/2.html

Hello, this week I want to discuss about ”Simulating Trends in Artificial Influence Networks” that describes artificial influence networks. Influence of society behaviours on the single person have been confirmed by lot of researches. When we are in situation, which we do not have information about legal rules or we have not met similar situation before (moral decision) then we will follow people. It shows that in the special circumstances influence of the environment may lead to not legal or moral decisions and behaviours. Additionally this situation might be the source of new rules development. Group of people involved in this story might extend this ”new” rule to another one. This group of rules is known as social rules, or as social norms.

1. What do you think about simulations? Can they strictly predict humans behaviours?
2. What is the trend strangest that you have ever heard, or even better you have followed (then how long, and why :) )?
3. Why most of people follow trends? Do you agree with this thesis?

Thanks for the comments.

Week 4 - 08.05-14.05.2017 - The ethics of smart cities and urban science

Hi,
I would like to present an article about an idea of smart cities. Smart "things" idea has emerged a few years ago and nowadays it starts to integrate with our cities. From simple smartphone to smart city, in linked article authors are trying to explain urban life in an IT way. They try to solve problems of instrumental rationality, privacy, surveillance and data usage. Authors argue that smart city initiatives and urban science need a new way of approach and better description and they give us plenty of examples how they think it should be done.
Article:
