Week 2 [4-10.04.2016] Assessment of Application Technology of Natural User Interfaces in the Creation of a Virtual Chemical Laboratory

Hello,

I would like to present a very interesting article prepared by two polish scientists which was published by Springer. This paper is quite short and provides promising results of the usage of NUI at schools.

I would like to ask following questions:
1. Have you heard of NUI before? What do you think about this aspect of usage of NUI?
2. What are the other ways of the usage of NUI?
3. Do you see any drawbacks of the usage of NUI?

  1. 1. Have you heard of NUI before?

Just by looking at the article, it turns out that I heard a lot about NUI, but I just didn't realize it has its own distinctive name :)

    2. What do you think about this aspect of usage of NUI? What are the other ways of the usage of NUI?

I believe NUI has a lot of possible applications. The education is I guess the most obvious one and I believe it goes... naturally with Virtual Reality.
One of applications of NUI, I thought of many years ago would be to use gestures to remotely control appliances (i.e. the TV set or the lighting system).

    3. Do you see any drawbacks of the usage of NUI?

It just depends of form of NUI we are talking about. For instance, the one used in smartphones: the touch interface (or the pen, but it is just other aspect of the same technology). Even on high-end scale of the equipment it is oftentimes imprecise and sluggish. It would be hard to use it for tasks where precision and speed are required.

    1. Hi,
thank you for the response. I have to admit too that before reading this article I didn't know that it is called NUI :)
Regarding education there is a wide field of possibilities. Younger and older children may be more interested in the lessons and the use of NUI will let them be better prepared. However, I have heard that it is already possible to use gestures to control TV (LG, Samsung Smart TV).
I agree with you about the lack of precision using NUI. I have to admit I still have problems with the 'keyboard' in the smartphones. I have to repeat typing one word even 5 times because I keep missing the right buttons.

  2. 1. Have you heard of NUI before? What do you think about this aspect of usage of NUI?

I’m surprised same way as Pawel is, never heard NUI name, though I heard a lot about it.
I’d say that observing the progress of various technologies, it is inevitable NUI will be everywhere.

    2. What are the other ways of the usage of NUI?

Yes, virtual and augmented realities are obvious applications of NUI.
    One could think of holograms.

    3. Do you see any drawbacks of the usage of NUI?

Yes, potentially few. Due to novel approach and certain habits learned while using standard UIs, the learning curve may be longer, even though it’s more intuitive by definition. However this mostly to due to 3-D aspects.
Similarly to Pawel’s view, I see potential challenges wherever precision is required.

    1. Hi,
thank you for your comment. It seems to be just a next instance of the use of Virtual Reality. Apart from the education, I am quite excited to be someday a NUI user like those in the 'Minority Report'
      http://esq.h-cdn.co/assets/cm/15/06/1600x800/54d43cbde0f9f_-_7589796-minorityreport.jpg :)
You are right about the pitfalls. Precision may be an enormous challenge.

  3. 1. Have you heard of NUI before? What do you think about this aspect of usage of NUI?
Well I didn't receive much of information in this area and perhaps this is a reason why I don't hear about NUI before. The second part of this question I would answer in last paragraph.

    2. What are the other ways of the usage of NUI?
Another difficult question. I beilve that all devices from virtual world should connect in near future resulting in the most real experiance of real world. The are some areas not discovered yet.

    3. Do you see any drawbacks of the usage of NUI?
Imagine the world when junor student don't know exacly if he or she should mix acid with water or water with acid. When you decide to skip virtual simulation and play it hard way you may experiance funy result in some group of student. However if we have more resources we should skip simulations and allow student to fill the experiments without virtual visualisations. Does we do not practice this way on medical academies?

    1. Hi,
thank you for the answer. Regarding the third question, don't you think that even if we had more resources we couldn't perform the experiments as much as using NUI? Chemical experiments require some sort of a supervision by, for an example, the teacher who has a specific knowledge?

    Hi
I never hear about NUI before. After read this article NUI will use everywhere in my opinion.
    2. What are the other ways of the usage of NUI?
In my opinion NUI will have a lot of examples .For example in TV or TV Games or console.
    3. Do you see any drawbacks of the usage of NUI?

In my opinion now I don't see any drawbacks but I think NUI have a couple of drawback but it is independ for which we use this.

    1. Hello Iwo,
Thank you for the reply. You are right about the third question. There may a possibility of losing some skills and there are limitation of the NUI usage. For me it is hard to imagine, that it is/will be possible to practise neurological operations this way. How much this will help the students acquire the skills?

  5. 1. Have you heard of NUI before? What do you think about this aspect of usage of NUI?
I have never heard about NUI.
But when it come to chemistry and to some experiments in chemical laboratory it can be very nice thing and it can save students health from bad decision when it comes to acids.

    2. What are the other ways of the usage of NUI?
Seriously you can add this technology to almost every IT field where we are talking about UX Design and 3D graphics (with this modeling sculptures in Blender can be very nice).
If you are end user it can change the way you think about browsing internet pages and filling in every day task (like e-shopping).

    3. Do you see any drawbacks of the usage of NUI?
At this point I totally agree with Piotr Wójcik, sometimes you have to be aware of consequences of your actions. Sometimes it's very hard to model some day2day tasks and when someone will make a mistake in implementation it can give some very serious problems not only with things which you wanted to do in real life but also it can be very bad when it comes to educational side od this approach.

    1. Hi, thank you for the answers. I think that the use of NUI will not only prevent students from the consequences of bad decisions but also encourage them to continue learning. I think that I will be happy if the idea of NUI does not replace some underlying actions like the real experiments in laboratories.

  6. 1. Have you heard of NUI before? What do you think about this aspect of usage of NUI?
Thanks god I'm not posting first comment, because I have never heard about NUI and now I know I'm not the only one :) I've never been good in chemistry so it's pretty hard topic for me. However, NUI is a next step in technology around us. Promising, it's hard to elaborate about this topic with limited knowledge I currently have. By the way even though article is in english pictures are in polish :D
    2. What are the other ways of the usage of NUI?
You can use it everywhere, maybe for learning in primary schools.
    3. Do you see any drawbacks of the usage of NUI?
I prefer evolving to interfaces based on Augmented Reality. This idea is closer to VR in my opinion. It's too soon to say anything about it, without some sort of demo.

    1. Hello Mateusz, thank you for the response.
I have to admit that when I was looking for the article to present and I found this one about NUI I realized that, in fact, we all had heard about the examples of the use of NUI but not the name.

  7. As predecessors I wasn't aware that kinect-like motion detection based interfaces have it's own distinctive name. NUI sounds good, I'll try to remember that. I actually heard some ideas of using Kinect in schools to enhance the teaching experience for the kids a couple of years ago. I think this is a great concept.

I feel that NUI will be heavily used in games (as in case of X-Box with Kinect). Probably NUI interfaces will be used with AR (the Minority Report example you brought up in the one of the comments fits here in perfectly). Honestly I don't see any drawbacks of such interfaces from the user perspective (assuming the the precision will be sufficient). I can imagine that designing such interfaces will be much more complicated and will require a completely different approach.

    1. Hello Krzysztof,
Just as you are writing it - games and AR, will probably the direction of the development of the NUI.

  8. Hi, when I started reading your post, I thought that I had never heard of NUI but I was wrong. More precisely speaking I don't know this is NUI. I think gaming consoles are another good example usage of NUI. Similarly as other colleagues they said precision may be huge challenge for use these technology in teaching process.

  9. Hello and thank you for linking this interesting article. I haven't really heard about NUI before, however when I read about it now I realised its something I was thinking about under many other terms related to HCI. Anything that is natural and simplistic in its form (comes with natural instinctive and intuitive interface) has great potential to become a great tool (interface in this case). NUI could be used in almost any field, I am not sure if there is even a limiting factor. Nothing is ideal however as for this topic I don't really see many drawbacks, so maybe it is this one thing which could be as close to perfection as possible. ;)

    1. Hello Michail,
we have to keep trying keeping up with the reality while designing any UI devices. I also think that this area (NUI) will bring something interesting to our lives :)

  10. 1. Have you heard of NUI before? What do you think about this aspect of usage of NUI?

Of course I did. " A NUI relies on a user being able to quickly transition from novice to expert. While the interface requires learning, that learning is eased through design which gives the user the feeling that they are instantly and continuously successful". From my point of view that natural transition of the interface is most important.

    2. What are the other ways of the usage of NUI?

Please have a look at: http://repozytorium.p.lodz.pl/bitstream/handle/11652/463/Natural_User_Interfaces_Glonek_2012.pdf?sequence=1
At present the subject of NUI together with the large number of ways to interact with a device forces most of the renowned academic centres to conduct research connected with NUI. When it comes to the industry, the development of NUI is focused on telecommunications and computer games.

    3. Do you see any drawbacks of the usage of NUI?

I read about it in Norman, D., Natural user interfaces are not natural, interactions, Vol. 17, No. 3, 2010, pp. 6–10. According to the author’s observations, the nature of gestures is ephemeral and they do not leave any trace, which proves to be a considerable drawback when the user receives wrong response from the system or when there is no response at all. What constitutes a problem in such situations is the difficulty with reconstructing the gesture as it was read and interpreted by the computer.

    1. Hello Marcin,
As you have written it is going to be a great challenge to track human's gestures by a computer. The area of NUI deployment is worth investing because it seems to be a natural way of the development of any of user interfaces.

  11. The idea of NUI (under different names) did show up in the science fiction literature for many years. So, it is not such a new idea. Recent advances in microtechnology are very promising in this respect. There are already examples like Google glasses and other wearable computing devices. But first of all the current big progress in voice recognition in my opinion is the best step towards NUI implementation. We should be able to talk to our computers instead of typing.

  12. Hi Katarzyna,

It is very interesting article. I really enjoyed the reading.

    1. Have you heard of NUI before? What do you think about this aspect of usage of NUI?

I haven't heard the name of NUI before. It is quite nice nice and intuitive. I like it :)

    2. What are the other ways of the usage of NUI?

For sure they are. Firstly it is commonly used in games based on Kinect, but not only.
Kinect is quiet often used in therapy for people that have problems with their body mobility, e.g. after strokes or accidents. It is a nice way to extend the rehabilitation outside the hospital. Such games (with NUI) are kind of fun and motivating way of excercising. You can read a bit about it for example here: http://x-tech.am/kinect-game-based-rehabilitation/
There are also rehabilitation games that do not require more than computer with a camera. Maybe they are not as spectacular as for Kinect, but seem to also work. You can try them here: http://graktywnosc.pl/gry-rehabilitacja/

    3. Do you see any drawbacks of the usage of NUI?

Generally not. Maybe the students who were learning only on with NUI laboratory will not be as carefull as they should be with real chemicals? But that's only my guess.

  14. It was the first time I saw the name "NUI". After realizing what hides behind that acronym I started to feel more comfortable with topic. Usage of NUI will increase with time. In this point I have to agree with some of above comments - it can be applied in every area somehow associated with IT. To give you at least one drawback - the precision is crucial in case of any mistake tragic consequences could arise

I think that technology could be use in almost every kind of graphic modeling.

    3) Do you see any drawbacks of the usage of NUI?

Oh yes, for example in school, on the chemist lesson. The students could do any experiments without consequence :)
