Which
issues can be resolve in 2016 ?
Honestly, every time I see "Top 10 something" I wonder who writes this kind of nonsense and who pays for it. This is another article, fourth as far as I remember, I've recently read, that suggests dropping the EAI. More interesting is the fact that it proposes investing in BI and data analysis. I've worked in couple large scale IT environments and I cannot imagine an environment with over 5 systems without proper EAI solution, especially when an enterprise requires data analysis and some predictions.
ReplyDeleteIn 2016 we can solve an issue of time-wasting top 10 lists of issues :)
Hi Mikołaj
DeleteThanks for comment, I am agree with you about somebody pays for it :)
I really like what Mikołaj said and I totally agree with him and I will add from myself, who reads it? I am wondering if there is some CEO who reads this stuff and thoughts about leaving EAI solution this is complete nonsense.
ReplyDeleteThe similar situation is with BI and Data Science. this kind of stuff are trendy so usually they are on top of this kind of lists. This kind of attitude (when you want to adopt something) is great but it will be only possible in smaller comapanies. Large companies (Banks, Insurance Companies) have really old technological stack and they don't want read Top IT Issues.
For example one of the projects (new system for Danish bank) that starts from beginning of this year is going to be written in COBOL and they will use DB2 instead of (MongoDB, Riak or any other fancy stuff).
I must say that they should read couple of this TOP 10 IT Stuff. :-)
First- yes, I do agree with the author. Presented issues can leads into real problems, but in IT when the problem occurs, very often the solution is on the way. I don't know if there are more issues to add, but I can say what makes me angry at the work when some EAI processes are going to be changed - The IT Architects, who urges CEO's to invest money and time into systems of some big vendors like Intel, Microsoft, Oracle...ofcourse their systems are solving the upcoming problems - well upcoming problems don't have to occur- and that's it, we worry in advance, and gives solutions for the problems which very often will not occur. Another thing is that the solutions, methods, systems ae evolving very fast, but the developing process of our system doesn't keep up with their speed. So the real issues here are to know what are our needs, what is the direction in development of our products, and be agile.
ReplyDeleteHi Adam,
DeleteThanks for comment. I agree with you about real issues in your last sentence

ReplyDelete1. Do you agree with authors ?
ReplyDeleteI may agree with this article authors' only to certain degree. For instance, divesting of IT infrastructure I think is not a good idea. May enterprise companies have done so in the past only to learn that they cannot live without in-house IT. Of course, some services can be outsourced, but some have to stay.
2. Do you add some issues ?
To be blunt, higher education is not my area of interest. I have no idea about challenges higher education institutions are facing and if I can, I don't really want to dive into it. Sorry.
3. Which issues can be resolve in 2016 ?
Out of issues mentioned in the article, I believe hiring and retaining IT workers is resolvable. All it takes is creating right environment and secure enough founding. That's it.
For other issues, I am afraid it takes time, patience and right amount of money to resolve them. Especially if you haven't even started yet.
Once again I am glad that somebody is thinking how to meet challenges of modern education by the best use of modern technologies. I think there are couple of very interesting topics mentioned in this article like security issues, use of innovative solutions in upgrading the effectiveness of learning or addressing the challenges of e-learning. I think that high education authorities could benefit from reading this article by noticing and discussing issues mentioned in the article (which doesn’t necessarily mean that they should agree with every word or implement the ideas exactly as it is advised). I do not think these issues will be resolved in 2016 and I do not think this is the purpose of such articles – I think they are just trying to highlight the most important areas and directions which need to be noticed for further development.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting article, it seems to me that the authors of this article very accurately described the topic, and I am not able to add any points which would bring any additional value. About my recent commentary to Article ZC; it seems to me that the last issues #10 will have a major impact not only in 2016 but in subsequent years. Nomadic teaching becomes more and more popular every month gaining more and more followers and this is why we should pay special attention to it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Mikolaj Szypke, but described issues exists. We can agree with authors but are this issues in top 10 ? :). I didn't find any data which was source of this “top list”. More interesting for me is that, what was changed since 2015 - because similar article have different issues in 2015 - were they solved? :) Security is major problem of IT technology. We have to ensure proper level of security in addiction to technology development .
ReplyDeleteInstitutional Data Management: Improving the management of institutional data through data standards, integration, protection, and governance in my opinion is the easiest problem which might be resolved. THere are a lot of standards which can be reused to do that in 2016. Only protection of this data is very wide area and should be moved to another point (maybe in 2017 ;) )
To a certain extent I agree with the author but also understand speakers who have some questioning whether these are the most important issues. But I agree with Julia that there are some very interesting topics as referred in this article, such as safety issues or the use of innovative solutions for improving the effectiveness of education, because it is nowadays also are very important matters. And what will be resolved in 2016 ...? I do not know, time will tell. It is important to get along with IT solutions or technical strode aware of the possibility of their use, especially in education, I have the impression that it is a little disappointing.
ReplyDeleteDo you agree with authors ?
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I like rankings and so on, but there is always a small catch. Sometimes they are very biased. In this particular case it's not that bad. Anyway, I would like to move IT Workforce Hiring and Retention from 4th position to 1st.
Do you add some issues ?
Nope.
Which issues can be resolve in 2016 ?
It's really hard to resolve any of them completely, but this is only my opinion.
I don't have any deep thoughts about that topic and I can't tell wheather I agree or not. Mikołaj has a good point (apparently I'm not only who agrees with him).
ReplyDeleteTo add another issues I would copy title of the article, paste it on Google search and rewrite another few "top issues". It doesn't make much sense to me. Scenario of finding answer to your last question would be similar so I will skip it too.
Hi everyone,
ReplyDeleteOh, I agree with my colleague Mikołaj, it is totally with non sense public top of something like that. I think that kind of article is only for fun or mayby for something else but I can not wonder about it :) The good issues I agree is there are will be less article like that. I think that leave EAI is not good idea. I don not think so that will be proper. After that I will say that I agree with my friend Tomasz Sznajder - that The similar situation is with BI and Data Science. this kind of stuff are trendy so usually they are on top of this kind of lists. This kind of attitude (when you want to adopt something) is great but it will be only possible in smaller comapanies.
1. Do you add some issues ?
Yeah, I added many issues at previously articles.
2. Which issues can be resolve in 2016 ?
I think the most important issue to resolve in 2016 is publish less article like „top of „
Hi, thanks for bringing us this list of top IT issues of 2016 in higher education. The articles is quite lengthy and unfortunately I didn't have that much time to read it whole, however I'll try to answer your questions based on the most critical parts of the article that I read. The authors chose as the top issue to be information security. I agree that it is a very important topic however I don't think 2016 will bring much into this area, we can never guarantee total security of information. The 2nd point however seems more prominent because it is something that is already but requires a 180 degree turn to change the currently used educational methods and build new ones depending on the technological advances that already exist. As for the rest of the points I generally agree with the authors and can't really add anything more than what they and our colleagues already proposed.
ReplyDelete*that is already doable
DeleteToo bad the post is not editable after publishing. :p
Hi!
ReplyDeleteThank you for an interesting article. Education is not my field of study, but thanks to this write-up I could see a new point of view. It is hard not to agree with the authors, but it is difficult for me to add more issues than described in an article.
1. Is traditional university a good or bad learning place?
ReplyDeleteHmmm, That is a good question and the answer is not simple. Now I think that traditional univesity is a good learning pleace. If you go to that traditional school you must be there every day. You have the obligation to prepare to lesson and you know that you can be testen online by teacher. It causes that you everyday have to think about your excerises and other thinks. It is good learning pleace but I think in the future we will have some kind of revolution of education, but I can not say what would it be.
2. Which of presented new university models do you prefer and why?
In my opinion if you would like to learn you do not need any of that presented University. If you want to educate you can learn by website, online or similar techniques. Generally I belive that the most piece of your education depends on you and your involvement – it is the most important.
Do you agree with authors ?
ReplyDeleteI agree with the opinion about application e-learning in higher education. Today the only one service to learn online is the coursera. People need more services and tools to learn and study. This is only way to spread knowledge and provide experience without barriers.
Do you add some issues ?
No, in this article problems are well described.
Which issues can be resolve in 2016 ?
This topic is still evolving that's why it is really hard to answer that question. Situation is changing dynamically, every day we can observe new tools and services. One year in IT can change whole topic - example of that is cloud computing.
1. Do you agree with authors ?
ReplyDeleteI agree with authors
2. Do you add some issues ?
No
3. Which issues can be resolve in 2016 ?
No one
I agree with Mikolaj and Thomas on the described approach to EA and BI. EA and BI are very important. Besides I agree with author in some of points. Whether its popular or not universities should investing in security, optimizing educational technology and enterprise application integrations.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure that we can give you a specific answer on your questions. As for me this is only a tip of iceberg. IoT is evolving fast, we constantly solve some problem and find new one. Porbably we`ll solve a lot of described problems but there will be many more to solve, probably there will be more new then solved ones
ReplyDeleteIt is hard not to agree with authors. It looks like fixing all issues will take some time, for sure more than the year 2016. I agree with opinion that not everybody have time to monitor or be activist in this area. We should hope that someday the decision about what is important will be collected from individuals, somehow.
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI kind of agree with authors. I think that there are a lot of possibilities to spend money for IT more wisely. That's why the strategy mentioned in the article (Divest, Reinvest, and Differentiate) makes sense to me. However, I think that the list is biased and subjective (i.e. "Benchmark IT finances by participating in the EDUCAUSE Core Data Service"). It's not like I totally disagree with that list. I just think that different universities have different objectives and those strategies should fulfill that objectives. Sometimes it might be good idea to outsource and sometimes not. It depends on access to internal resources. Maybe technical universities should work with students? For example I don't agree with this statement: "Vendor and contract management can ensure that the institution is not overpaying, has appropriate terms and conditions, and is purchasing the right components and service levels". Generally speaking that's true, but in many different cases other strategies are more accurate.
Do you agree with authors ?
ReplyDeleteI’d say this is very vaguely depicted list of issues. The major problem I’d see is that article talks about differentiation of the business, however it approaches the topic from IT side. IT is not a business differentiator, as IT is just a tool enabling the business. It does not to drive it, it’s the other way round.
Do you add some issues ?
The article listed the most urgent ones, however does not reveal any surprise. I’d say, like Mikołaj, kind of waste of the time creating Top 10 something.. no progress is made because of such lists.
Which issues can be resolve in 2016 ?
All these issues could be resolved, however it depends on many aspects and some of them unfortunately, as reality bites, usually take a loooooong time to conclude.
ReplyDelete1. Do you agree with authors ?
It is good to read this article and to get to know their point of view. This top ten sets at least some directions for improvement.
2. Do you add some issues ?
No, to be honest my knowledge is not extended enough in this field.
3. Which issues can be resolve in 2016 ?
I hope hiring and retaining IT workers can be resolved as quickly as possible hopefully in 2016.
> Do you agree with authors ?
ReplyDeleteHow come any one of use wouldn't be? Say what there is to say in a most generalized way and ask if you are wrong or not.
> Do you add some issues ?
I guess the issue is that the given `top 10` list was similar for 2015 or 2010.
Issue 11 - Almost the same `top 10` issues last 10 years.
Isn't this one deserves adding to the list?
> Which issues can be resolve in 2016 ?
Malgorzata hates short answers. Forgive me. How about `None` ?
