Week 6 [04-10.01.2016] Augmented reality and business

I would like to present you an article from my blog. Augmented reality in business. This technology is mostly associated with entertainment and/or sci-fi movies, but it is more and more present in our every day life. We can find new examples of usage in business marketing, medicine in every important for us branch of our lives.
In my opinion AR is our future, it is just a matter of time when we`ll have AR glasses, cars with full HUD, or smart windows in our homes. We should stop asking "how?" or "is that possible?" and start asking "when and where it will start for good?"

  1. 1. What do you think about augmented reality ?
I definitely think that augmented reality technology can be beneficial and useful. I think that AR technology can help a lot of people in certain fields do their jobs a lot better. AR technology can help surgeons perform their jobs better. That is why I think that AR technology isn't just for video games.
    2. Do you know any interesting usages of AR ?
In my opinion that healthcare is one of the most important and practical applications of AR technologies that we can come up with. One of the interesting uses for AR in the medical field involves live interactive imaging for assisting physicians, medical students and children. Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) includes procedures where a camera is inserted into the patient's body to help the doctor visualize the procedures he or she is conducting. In one example, this form of surgery is aided with the use of AR imagery of a brain superimposed onto the patient's head, giving the doctor a more tangible visualization.

    3. Do you think it will become as popular as smarthphone ?
I think that in the future AR (smart glasses or Augmented Reality glasses) will become as popular as smartphones. the Smart Glasses Market 2015 report claims that the number of smart glasses shipped worldwide will reach a billion come 2020, and will exceed the predicted number of mobile phone shipments when 2025 arrives.

    1. 1. I agree. THere is even couple of project related with health. For example it helps surgeons to see cancer cells during operation.
      3. I can't wait for that :) But we need to remember that smart glasses are still something that we don't know how to place in our every day life. There is still a lot of law issues

  3. I think that is curious and interesting, but I would not say that exciting.
Perhaps the marketing does not convinced me that I need it everywhere, eg. A window glasses etc. :)
I met an interesting application - I myself have used, I like this solution - RayBan provides software that enables fitting glasses - this is the Virtual Mirror. http://www.ray-ban.com/usa/virtual-mirror

I do not think that it became more popular than smartphones.

    1. Couple years ago nobody thought that everyone will want to have a small PC in his pocket, or when NOKIA created o cellphone that was size of a lighter, nobody thought that someone will want to have 5 inch display in his pocket :) Let us remember that for example smart glasses are extension of our perception and other devices around us. For example combination of IoT and AR is something tht is getting more and more popular

  5. I know from TV that the augmented reality is one of the more promising technology area in 2016. I believe that the combination of AR and AI can give us something interesting / new. It is another step in technology, but helmet video is tight-fetched. Indicators from the machine should be connected directly to the computer and then you have an access to the data in real time with logs etc. Probably it was only advertisement. But the way AR is a future in a factories where you have to do lot of manual operations. Camera can detect defects or show worker manual.

    I agree with section:
    Augmented reality = new possibilities
Augmented reality can offer a lot more than only couple of cool visual effect on screen of your smartphone.

AR as visual effects = disaster of this technology.

    2. I saw video about VW service from your article. I do not know any implemented AR solution.

    3. I do not think so. This solution might be very important part of business (production area, trainings, entertainment etc.).

  6. Hi David. Very nice article. I think augmented reality it's very interesting subject. Of course I agree with Marcin that using AR for treatment is good example. Well maybe another area where the AR may be used is army or other public institution. Not mentioned in the article as I remember. Maybe its not typical business use but in my opinion very interesting use case too. Here is an example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3TtCDLZO7g

Augmented reality certainly will become much more popular than nowadays. AR is developing very quickly. I'm really curious about projects like Magic Leap or Microsoft's HoloLens and I will be glad to make possibility to use it in the near future. Here is an article about these projects http://www.cnet.com/news/magic-leap-what-we-know-so-far/

    1. Funny thing about AR is that the last thing you can say about it is that it is developing quickly. You need to remember that this technology is with us since 60`s last century :) THat time were performed first experiments with lasesrs, HUDs and AR. For example simple overlay on TV during soccer match is also AR.

    2. Yes, I read some notes about this on wiki page. I mean that from my private observations special in last years was lot of changes in this technology.

  7. 1)
Augmented reality (AR) is the integration of digital information with live video or the user's environment in real time. Basically, AR takes an existing picture and blends new information into it. One of the first commercial applications of AR technology is the yellow first down line in televised football games.

    2)
Some of the many actual or potential uses of augmented reality:

    - The changing maps behind weather reporters.
    - A navigational display embedded in the windshield of a car.
    - Visual displays and audio guidance for complex tasks.
    - Images of historical recreations integrated with the current environment.
    - A display in a pilot's helmet that allows the pilot to, in effect, see through the aircraft.
    - Mobile marketing involving product information displayed over that product or its location.
    - Video games with digital elements blended into the user's environment.
    - Virtually trying on clothes through a webcam while online shopping.
    - Displaying information about a tourist attraction by pointing a phone at it.

    3)
I think AR can be a application in Smartphone but cannot become as popular as smartphone

    1. Why do you combine AR only with smartphones ? There is a lot of projects that are glasses as a standalone device with it`s own software. Of course we can combine it with smartphone but also with every device connected to internet (IoT). Nowadays AR and smartphone is most popular connection but we need to remember that this is only a short stop on the development course

    1. What do you think about augmented reality ?

In my opinion augemented reality (AR) have some future, it is very interesing technology, but I think this technology can be useful in future.

    2. Do you know any interesting usages of AR ?
I don't know any interesting usages of AR now.

    3. Do you think it will become as popular as smarthphone ?
In my opinion this technology won't become as popular as smartphones because I think this technology is good for TV.

    1. TV is only a small and poor example of AR. The true power is related with HUDs or smart glasses. Our computers, devices are getting smaller and more powerfull so soon smart glasses will look same like the standard normal glasses and probably we won't even notice the difference. This will be the true milestone

  9. To answer your question: Soon very soon :), (at least I hope so). I agree with my colleagues. The AR technology definitely can bring us many benefits. Relating to opinion, the combination of AI and AR might create a quite explosive mixture. And yes, I think that AR in the future will become as popular as smartphones.

  10. 1. What do you think about augmented reality ?

Nice toy :) OK, it could be very useful, but it is far from that at the moment.

    2. Do you know any interesting usages of AR ?

It depends on what you mean by "Interesting". I've seen AR used in advertising on the street of London. It might be interesting to some people. However, I prefer more practical cases, i.e. driving glasses (which I haven't seen, unfortunately).

    3. Do you think it will become as popular as smarthphone ?

It has a potential to actually replace smartphones. However, there are many improvements required. Especially in the Human-Computer Interaction area.

  11. 1. I think that augmented reality can really enrich our lives and it can contribute to see old stuff from different and new perspective.
    2. From your blog I must say that my favorite one will be AR from Ikea (especially that I moving from flat to flat) but the best usage will be in computer games. Computer games which can be played in world which surrounding us with a little grasp of artificial world.
    3. Yeah I think that for normal person (not for big companies) it will be a must, I think that we could compare this with smart watches and smart bands but here instead of this you will have smart glasses connected with phone :D .

At the moment we don't have good enough equipment to impress me, but in the near future, who knows?
    2. Do you know any interesting usages of AR ?
    Games, trainings and so on.
    3. Do you think it will become as popular as smarthphone ?
Maybe in next 5 to 10 years. In my honest opinion current generation of smartphones is not good enough and we can't take our desktop pcs with us to help them render environment :)

    1. To be honest power of our mobile devices is not a problem. Even if we need a strong 3D operations. Most problems are related with a poor quality of sensors that are added to smartphones. If we overcome this problem than I won't see an other

  13. First of all kudos for writing your own blog! I had tried to maintain a public tech journal once, but I didn't have the patience to keep it going. All the best with that and keep up the good work!

AR isn't really my cup of tea, but I agree with you that it's just a matter of time until will see some useful inventions enhancing our daily lives. I've played a bit with google glasses, impressive piece of technology but introduced to early to gain traction. I'm sure that in a couple of years AR HUDs and smart glasses will be as common as smartphones.

  14. Hi, thanks for this interesting article. I find AR a very prominent technology that we could benefit from in many cases. Most popular uses are probably giving additional context to real life items like i.e. exhibitions in museums or archeological sites which enrich reality with additional information or a visualization of ancient buildings/battles. It is currently used mostly in military (i.e. jet fighters equipped with holographic monitors which show targets but also in enterteinment like video games. There are options in some cars to get a special hololen on your windshield to show your actual speed without having to look anywhere else than the street. ;)
Smartphones already possess the ability to use AR technology, there are certain aplpications that you can use to view additional elements through your phones cameras, however those are optional and not many smartphone users know of their existance or they don't find them as crucial in their everyday life.

  15. It is a very interesting article, augmented reality is a very interesting and promising issue. It can be used especially in art and entertainment. I am afraid that i do not know any further interesting usages of AR.
I think that AR will not be as popular as smartphones. There will be needed some kind of device which will enable using AR, this may be even a smartphone.

    1. I think smartphone is not enough flexible. It is not a best way to use AR, but when we`ll have a good smart glasses or better HUD available for everyone I think that whole technology perspective will change a lot

  16. However, recently I have seen some kind of an usage of AR in the Museum of Film in Łódź. Children visiting the museum could 'play' in a cartoon.

  17. Sorry for off-topic comment, but I watched the video mentioned by Przemek and I'd really like to play some real time strategy on that hardware :)
I think that AR is most of all an entertainment technology, not as entertaining as video games though. Because of this it's development and broad application in everyday use is not particularly fast.

  18. 1. What do you think about augmented reality?

It is very interesting and useful question, I think augmented reality increasingly will fall in our different areas of life.

    2. Do you know any interesting usages of AR?

Yes, of course, such as helmets Skully which if I remember are already in sale on, once I met somewhere in the Internet examples of applications of such spectacles in medicine, I heard that in some countries the police want to use them for training purposes, examples are many, at present probably arises many applications that soon will be used in various fields of life.

    3. Do you think it will become as popular as smarthphone?

I do not think, in my opinion, the devices are targeted at narrower groups, but maybe I'm wrong,

  19. The idea of augmented reality is interesting but I can't imagine it widely used, yet. I've seen an advertising video of Microsoft HoloLens (they call it "mixed reality" instead of AR) some time ago and that looked impressive.
I don't know any interesting usages, I can only imagine areas that could take an advantage of AR (like games, military or some other technologically advanced fields).
Will it be popular as smartphones? Maybe, but world needs a few years to reach that point.

  20. I would say this is all about usability and ergonomics. If technology or device is usable and ergonomic the it becomes popular. Let's take vide calls for example. Looking at SF movies, 30 years ago people would bet that video calls will replace standard voice phone calls. Now every body have this possibility, even for free and who is using ? Almost nobody.. (when do you video call last time from your cell phone?) I think it is because people rarely want to see or show face during talking and same might goes to AR...

  22. I think it is a bit of a shame that AR is developing so slowly and mainly in entertainment because it can be really useful for example in emergency/medicine training. I think it will be as popular as smartphones and as it was said it might even replace smartphones with AR glasses.

  23. 1. What do you think about augmented reality ?

I really like the idea. I think it can bring many positives into such fields as medicine or education. Of course not only "serious" areas can be supported by AR. It can bring a lot of fun in gaming or help in such simple (and difficult in the same time) activities as house decorating (as you mentioned in your article).
Actually I am very excited about it.

    2. Do you know any interesting usages of AR ?

I wanted to mention about AR used by surgeons, but I saw that you already wrote about it on your blog, so I don't have more ideas (btw. very interesting blog).

    3. Do you think it will become as popular as smarthphone ?

I think they will, but it take some time :)

  24. Traditionally it was a very interesting article for me. This PhD English lessons have two positive aspects: improving my English skills and giving me a lot of information about new trends in IT technology. Generally I have heard something about this technology before but this article was my first time when I read about so many ways to use augmented reality. I reckon this technology is the future in such as home design, logistic, manufacturing etc. I think augmented reality glasses or helmet will be used in more and more places all over the world in the next years. I think education also will be part of this technology. I image future students-to-be who during lectures will get additional information to their augmented reality glasses or helmet, or during some kind of lessons for example biology or chemistry lessons will use these items to help them do some experiments. I think augmented reality will be popular in the future but I think not so popular as smartphones. Unless in the future vendors connect smartphones with glasses or helmets.

it is inevitable. Its major feature is practicality and usability. For the specialised jobs it is a real accelerator which makes the job more efficient - no wonder all the manufacturers are looking at it.
    2. Do you know any interesting usages of AR ?
Yes, google glass. Used by doctors during surgeonical procedures. Head Up Display. In fact HUDs are something i’m keeping my fingers crossed.

    3. Do you think it will become as popular as smarthphone ?

    Eventually, yes.

  26. Hi,

From my point of view AR has the potential but is still unused technology. Right now, AR is less sexy than VR, but if you think about use cases, AR should be the killer. I played a lot with different AR and VR solutions. In case of AR the most known cases are related to martketing campaings, for example Ketchup Heinz (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GbplSdh0lGU). I really like the concept of "layers" used by navigation apps or recommendation engines (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/45/Nokia_City_Lens_screenshot.png). Smartphone is a hardware, AR is a type of user interface. I'm not sure that AR will become as popular as smartphones, because AR is not a general purpose solution but I'm pretty sure that it will be much more adopted by industry.

  30. 1. What do you think about augmented reality ?
    > AR always reminds me VR. The idea is cool but never experienced one that I would like to buy. I'm looking forward to see Sony's PS4 VR in the market. Microsoft has been working on Hololens for a while now. Possibilities are amazing.

    2. Do you know any interesting usages of AR ?
    > I don't know if any modern UX available to bring / consider an interesting use case.

    > What made smartphone popular was the amazing touch based UX Apple had brought with it. AR indeed needs it's own 'charming' user experience.
