Hello everybody,
Today I would like to present quite interesting topic about interoperability in Internet Of Things environment. For me this topic is very interesting because I would like to do some research in this particular area and finish my PHD.
The most interesting thing is fact that companies which want to enrich our lives stops further research and development in this field. They doing this by inventing their own solutions. In IoT filed the most important thing is cooperation between companies, but it's not exactly their way.

Below you will find some questions:
- Will interoperability between devices (made by different companies) enables easier and wider access to Internet of things stuff?
- Will IoT enrich our lives or will it spoils us?
- What do you think about fact that some devices made specially for helping you in everyday tasks, are sending over 70% of gathered data to its manufacturers and this companies are using this data in business fields (for example they are preparing special advertisements for you)?

Really interesting article, I do find this area really appealing and like to focus my research work around it as well.
ReplyDelete1. In general, yes, of course it would be easier. But it will not happen that way. I do believe, like the authors of article, that the pie is too big. That's why Google and Apple are doing everything to lock other producers right now with their preferred standard.
Apple released HomeKit, Google its Brillo. True interoperability would be if these two worlds could be integrated - that will NOT happen soon.
2. There is a really big potential in simplifying our lives with certain activities being taken over by 'smart' devices. There is a big potential in creating a brand new or richer experience for customers/users of these connected devices - I do count on this. But there is an obvious threat.. here we land on your 3rd question.
3. I do see a serious threat against users' privacy. In my perception, we're not able to stop this process as it is justified by the need of upgrading the service or devices. However data anonymization could be potential answer here. Let's see how this evolve..
I totally agree with you in all three answers. I am getting this weird feeling that every big company want to release something which is compatible with other devices and yet they are thinking in their own perspective and that is quite understandable. Even in open source community there is quite big gap because there is project promoted by linux foundation (https://allseenalliance.org/) and after couple years there are only 3 devices that are compatible. In this project there are 185+ companies that have already joined this project (still 3 devices are compatible).
DeleteI think we live in interesting times. Technology around us is rapidly developing and in a short period of time some astonishing ideas become reality. I love the modern world. I love the Internet, the social media, smartphones, clouds etc. I don’t care unduly about my privacy because I am an average man without any mysterious secrets. I use the social media, I use the Internet without hiding behind a proxy. Therefore I think IoT is a very interesting idea and I’m waiting impatiently for its coming up. I hope in the nearest future I will change my old household products for a much more modern equipment. These new devices will be connected with the Internet and they will perform different new functions. I hope my new fridge will order itself the missing products, and the courier will deliver them as soon as possible. I dream about a smart house connected to the Internet. I will be able to manipulate all the house system on demand. I think IoT will be very useful for everybody. Unfortunately this idea has two main problems: security and interoperability. Security is more important, of course but interoperability is also relevant. I hope that in the future big companies will agree to connecting all the devices with each other. I hope it will be like agreement concerning the Internet protocols. Everybody uses networks and everybody can connect with each other. Interoperability between devices will make it possible to provide us, the customers and the vendors with more and more benefits in the future. I think it will be fantastic when I see the advertisements addressed only for me. Now I waste my time watching a lot of useless advertisements. I’m looking forward to the modern future with a lot of curiosity and I hope for a better tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteI must agree with you when it comes to social media and usage of things connected to the internet - fridge in your example. But I totally disagree about advertisements that are made from data collected by your smart objects (BTW I hate advertisements), sharing data with companies can have big impact on security and privacy.
Delete1. Certainly yes, interoperability, lower prices and also increase the interest.
ReplyDelete2. In a sense, will make it easier and more enjoyable, increase quality of life. But if we do not become more addicted and clumsy I do not know - here I see the greatest threat ...
3. I am glad that the ads are addressed to me, but this is only due visible, some people do not remember that accompanied the effects of hidden and it is dangerous. I can see some people that consciousness is small and there is a huge threat. It can be used by people who will want to live at the expense of other people - not always fair. I think it is the greatest threat ...
I feel the same way when it comes to increase people awareness in security and privacy. But I must disagree when it come to topic about sharing data with companies, I am not fan of advertisements and I really don't like when somebody uses data which supposed to be gathered to cooperate with other devices to send advertisements to me.
DeleteHi,
ReplyDelete1. In my opinion generally yes, it easier, but it is impossible because companies are fighting for customers and they will not work together on this issue.
2.In my opinion it is increase quality of life.
3. I think producer can sending a information to his databases but we need a law about this (About use this information only for send for example special advertisements for us and etc ) . If we don't have a law , for example producer can be sell information about us to another company.
It's interesting that I didn't check is there any kind regulation about sharing data from this kind of objects (I must check this). But even if there will be such regulation companies may not want to apply to it and profit can be so high that pay high penalties can be very profitable.
DeleteMaybe you have right about profit can be so high that pay high penalties.
DeleteBut maybe company to seek to ensure that its reputation and don't do this, because in my opinion people dpn't like this
1- Will interoperability between devices (made by different companies) enables easier and wider access to Internet of things stuff?
ReplyDeleteI think to successfully deploy an IoT solution, you have to create ease-of-use and scalability from the sensor to the gateway to the network to the cloud, and have the ability to run analytics either on the edge or in the data center. I don’t think that one takes precedence over the other, though I would say that if you can’t connect the device, you are kind of stopped in your tracks there.
2-Will IoT enrich our lives or will it spoils us?
we have 3 reasons why the Internet of Things (still) doesn’t make sense
-Price: This is a real deal-killer – the current generation of consumer products for the Internet of Things is still way too expensive.
-The “basket of remotes” issue: And even if the costs of these Internet-connected things come down, it will be a nightmare interoperability issue to get all the different things talking to each other. Fifty billion devices connected to the Internet by 2020 could lead to a “basket of remotes” problem on steroids — yes, your Internet-connected devices work, but you have a whole bunch of remotes that you don’t use and that you can’t program to take advantage of their full functionality.
-Privacy:Third, the accumulation of all that Internet-connected stuff – stuff that’s presumably going to be outdated by the time of the next CES show in Vegas — is going to present nightmare privacy and security issues for users. Concerned about people hacking into your e-mail? Just wait until they hack into your bathroom mirror and release your naked selfies to the Internet.
There are three big issues that need to be resolved before we can realistically talk about the Internet of Things. The Internet of Things won’t work unless prices come down, the interoperability issues gets resolved and people figure out all the security and privacy issues. But, even then, it seems like a huge burden to place on consumers unless the cost savings, productivity or quality of life argument gets bumped up a bit. Until then, we’ll have to settle for “Things of the Internet” – devices that are all connected to the Internet, but not necessarily with each other.
That's true in all that you have written. There are much more issues according to researchers (there is also very important energy management issue). I think that we should resolve all of them and then we can talk about IoT.
DeleteWill interoperability between devices (made by different companies) enables easier and wider access to Internet of things stuff?
ReplyDeleteOf course, it's quite stupid that we have so many different standards. Billion of different connectors etc. I like the idea of USB type C for example.
Will IoT enrich our lives or will it spoils us?
It will spoli us as much as it will enrich our lives. In the future. Nowadays our smart hardware isn't good enough in my honest opinion. For example, smart watches with battery drained after a day. It's not acceptable for me.
What do you think about fact that some devices made specially for helping you in everyday tasks, are sending over 70% of gathered data to its manufacturers and this companies are using this data in business fields (for example they are preparing special advertisements for you)?
I don't like it. I'm trying to get rid off every "spies" in my life. Good example is Windows 10, prepared for Xbox, phones and PC's. By installing it we are agreeing to send a lot of data to Microsoft. With every update Microsoft is collecting even more data. Same thing with Google, Apple, Samsung etc. Everything to helps providing better content for you. Even if you don't want them.
About USB type C this reminds me situation that was quite similar to this one but was connected to mobile phone manufacturers and their power cords. So nowadays we have one cable to almost all devices that are available on market (excluding Iphones).
DeleteYes, it's quite obvious. Interoperability is the key to IoT growth. But it requires common language, sort of Canonical Data Model and common protocol(s) of communication. I didn't find any IETS's Request for Comments on IoT standards. Do you know is there any? Or maybe W3C is working on some open standard?
ReplyDeleteIoT is just a tool. Just like a hammer, as long as you use it wisely it will help you, but you can also hurt yourself with it. Most people tend to stay in their comfort zone and I think that using IoT will broaden the comfort zone and thus spoil some of us. The ones using it wisely will have more time for their families, their hobbies or research :)
I generally try to publish/share as little information about myself as possible. I realize that data in the Internet is not safe. So you have to answer a question what does your fridge know about you? Is it really a big issue that the manufacturer will know that you eat junk food and no vegetables? But I agree with Iwo that there should be some regulations on what kind of data can be sent to manufacturer and shared with other companies.
I think there won't be any canonical data model, every company want to have their own model as the only one that can be available on market. Maybe after some regulations made by EU there will be such a thing (like some time time ago there was situation with power cords to mobile). About communication standard I have not found any regulation and W3C is working on many things but they haven't done anything spectacular yet.
Delete1. Will interoperability between devices (made by different companies) enables easier and wider access to Internet of things stuff?
ReplyDeleteFrankly, I don't know. You won't like me, but to me IoT is too much ado about nothing. Do my refrigerator really have to talk to my microwave oven? Or should my stove post a picture of my dinner on Instagram?
What's the point?
The only reasonable "integration" for me is to integrate all devices with the power line for intelligent power consumption. I really don't want my fridge or washing machine to automatically order stuff on the Internet. Nor I want to display the latest news or recipe on my microwave's door. I don't need this and I am not willing to pay a dime.
2. Will IoT enrich our lives or will it spoils us?
So far, I haven't heard about too many useful features of any equipment that brands itself as IoT.
Maybe things like remotely controlling an Air Conditioner (should you have one at home...) or a cleaning robot (again...) could be something that I find meaningful. However, I am not sure if I can ever afford on such toys. And I know for sure, that I don't want to pay premium for it.
3. What do you think about fact that some devices made specially for helping you in everyday tasks, are sending over 70% of gathered data to its manufacturers and this companies are using this data in business fields (for example they are preparing special advertisements for you)?
It is a brutal invasion in my privacy. However... Using a mobile phone, an email application and this blog platform made by an advertising company... I guess I already used to being constantly tracked and profiled. The only thing I can do is to make sure that I won't gave my consent, so they do it illegally (if that changes anything). I just ignore their ads anyway, so...
The interoperability between devices not only refers to home automation but also to industry, health system, smart cities. And home IoT is almost at last place of IoT uses :-).
DeleteThis guy shows what you can do with IoT in your home.
TEDx Video
1. Will interoperability between devices (made by different companies) enables easier and wider access to Internet of things stuff?
ReplyDeleteInteroperability is a must to IoT growth.
2. Will IoT enrich our lives or will it spoils us?
In my opinion it will definitely increase the quality of our lives by overtaking household chores
3. What do you think about fact that some devices made specially for helping you in everyday tasks, are sending over 70% of gathered data to its manufacturers and this companies are using this data in business fields (for example they are preparing special advertisements for you)?
I do not like this fact at all. It is a bit like being spied in your our home.
Thanks for your interesting answer. And about privacy is what Paweł said sometimes you have spare some of your privacy or you have to resign from smart devices and also phones.
Delete1. Will interoperability between devices (made by different companies) enables easier and wider access to Internet of things stuff?
ReplyDelete2. Will IoT enrich our lives or will it spoils us?
3. What do you think about fact that some devices made specially for helping you in everyday tasks, are sending over 70% of gathered data to its manufacturers and this companies are using this data in business fields (for example they are preparing special advertisements for you)?
Interoperability between devices is the future but I don’t that in near future many different producers will allow for that. I think that this process will be inside products of one producers. Let`s take a simple example: Samsung. This company has a very wide portfolio from smartphones, smartbands, smartwatches to fridges etc. He can connect all of this things together.
It is just a matter of time when IoT will become a part of our everyday life. For sure it will make some parts of our live much easier and it can spoil some of us, but it won’t have a very heavy and big impact for our civilization.
The data is the power, we won’t change it. If you want to prevent it you would have to stop using your phone, band, probably watch, pc etc. This is the price.
Let`s remember that IoT often can be just a part of something bigger. It can be used in augmented reality or in education.
That's very interesting answer and I found interesting what did you said about Samsung, that there are a lot devices made by this company and they work together very well but when you want add another device to this network it can be quite difficult or even impossible to this.
DeleteConnection between smart devices and augmented reality sounds really great maybe in future this will be our reality.
1. I think it is good for end users. for business is goodon condition that such cooperation increases the profits of both companies.
ReplyDelete2. I believe that enhances.
3. really bothers me when I google ads are what you just browsed for example, allegro. Important so that we have the opportunity to choose the type of data transfer.
Sometimes it's possible to choose what you want to share with companies and sometimes (especially when you use smartphones) it's almost impossible to choose what kind of data you would like to share.
Delete1. Will interoperability between devices (made by different companies) enables easier and wider access to Internet of things stuff?
ReplyDeleteFrom my perspective interoperability between IoT devices is essential. I don't see much value in having "intelligent devices" which are completely separated and disconnected from the environment in which they are used. Life changing scenarios/services can be built thanks to cooperation of multiple devices.
2. Will IoT enrich our lives or will it spoils us?
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for life changing solutions. But so far, without much interoperability some of the ideas are a bit awkward, see here: http://weputachipinit.tumblr.com/
3. [...] - Personal data gathering. This actually a big problem for me. I'm struggling with this all the time, and I keep it in my mind while using services like GMail or Facebook. I'll definitely pay attention to data gathering policies of any smart device before purchasing it.
I wonder why companies don't want to share their policies about data usage. Maybe some EU regulation will fix this- who knows. But the best part will be when companies will remember about about this kind of regulation.
DeleteOf course interoperability between devices enables easier and wider access to Internet of things stuff. I agree that such cooperation is unlikely to be the result of work on a standard created by Google or Apple. In my opinion the more likely it is that one of the leading non-profit organizations will develop a standard that people will use.
ReplyDeleteWill IoT enrich our lives or will it spoil us? Hard to say. I believe that IoT has a huge potential which can give us more benefits than threats.
What Im thinking about fact that some devices sending over 70% of gathered data to its manufacturers and this companies are using this data in business? Well it depends on whether they have my permission for it or not. Because often we don't have that information, I think it's a big dangerous to our privacy. Not only because of technical problems, but also due to the lack of legal regulations it will be difficult to get rid of these threats.
I agree about collaboration between there won't be any especially between Google and Microsoft. Maybe Linux Foundation will do something about it.
DeleteWhen it comes to gathered data I think that you even don't know when device sends data to its manufacturer.
1. To ensure interoperability we need to ensure compatibility between devices and that should be enforced by general standards. Otherwise we have limited possibility to pair devices from different producers, what is partly desirable by producers.
ReplyDelete2. For sure it is, and this kind of solutions has big potential and a lot of possibilities which we are discovering in each new item.
3. As I told in previous materials: sometimes tracking is required to serve proper level of services. To meet client needs you have to get data. If this data is calculated to improve my life (for example when I need information about car accidents, traffic jam, etc.). If data about me was sent to manufacturer only to help him sell another product - then this message should be visible for client to protect him (and there should be easy option to disable that function). If solution not requires any data to improve services then such activities should be prohibited
I totally agree with you about sharing data in terms of helping people in improving their lives. The biggest problem is about showing from manufacturers data when gathered data will be used. This should be clearly visible every time when someone (manufacturer) wants to get our data.
Delete1- Definitely yes
ReplyDelete2-3 That depends on implementation. Generally speaking ( as mentioned above), every IoT effort aims to „help” In our life, but we have to acknowledge the potential risks involved. The technology development is meant to facilitate social improvements, but there are numerous examples in history showing the unexpected unpleasant sideeffects ( like spam in email communication). An ex ample of spam, as I mentioned above, became a modern plaque bringing a lot of nuisances and aggreviations, but personally it doesn’t bother me I have a very good spam filter
But what about situation when your spam filter won't work as it should? For example (hypothetical situation) you are using Gmail and some Nexus device, spam filter is also made by Google and you get all your ads directly on your phones in apps and games it will block all advertisements made by other companies but not made by Google, so any kind of Spam filter won't help you. I think that every data that is sent to manufacturer without your permission is bad.
DeleteWe use technology mainly for the purpose of making our lives easier. How easy it is today to communicate between distanced areas, travel or learn.
ReplyDeleteJust a century ago it took months to travel across the globe. Caravans that were going from India to Europe carrying all sorts of goods required incomparably more resources, time and effort than today.
Thanks to technology we can conquer the same distance in matter of hours traveling at speed of 800 kilometers per hour. But are we spoiled by that? I would argue. In return we can spend time doing all sorts of other things.
"Just a century ago it took months to travel across the globe." Not in 80 days :P? Just kidding. :-) Very nice argumentation, thanks.
Delete1. Will interoperability between devices (made by different companies) enable easier and wider access to Internet of things stuff?
ReplyDeleteWell first of all they need to agree upon a common standard (from the over 400 that exist, mentioned by the article) and this will eventually lead to progress in this area. It is profitable for some companies not to chose a universal standard in order to make their services reliant on their products only.
2. Will IoT enrich our lives or will it spoil us?
It will do both. We decide whether we will accept it to spoil us or not. Technology tends to simplify things, we could call that some kind of spoiling but I don't treat it that way.
3. What do you think about fact that some devices made specially for helping you in everyday tasks, are sending over 70% of gathered data to its manufacturers and this companies are using this data in business fields (for example they are preparing special advertisements for you)?
Most of them require you to permit sending statistics, of course some we can't control but we need to accept it if we want to use them. It generates crucial data for them for future development and also money to back them up. Whether it is ethical is another story.
I totally agree about first answer in terms of making some universal standard but without some regulations from EU it will be very hard, because when you produce some sort of devices you want to sell all devices from series to your client and you can easily do some sort of price manipulation.
DeleteAnd about ethical behaviour in terms of big companies it can be another topic for discussion.

ReplyDelete1. Will interoperability between devices (made by different companies) enables easier and wider access to Internet of things stuff?
ReplyDeleteNowadays standardisation is a key element of growth. It is the common show stopper in every development process. IoT is not exception. Without the common standard there will be no revolution in IoT. It will be still slow evolution process.
2. Will IoT enrich our lives or will it spoils us?
IoT will change our live as GSM did. It will definitely " enrich" the supplies of those solutions. It is to early to justify how it will change our lives if in any ways .
3. What do you think about fact that some devices made specially for helping you in everyday tasks, are sending over 70% of gathered data to its manufacturers and this companies are using this data in business fields (for example they are preparing special advertisements for you)?
As I wrote previously IoT will "enrich" the supplies of those solutions. It will be another THING reducing our privacy. That is very sad I think.
Thank you for your answer.
DeleteI am aware that this technology may spoil us but I would like to have my car authomatically launched to heat the interior or get a fresh coffee every morning after waking up.
ReplyDeleteThis kind of facilities will not spoil us intelectually it will give us more time for really relevant things to do.
Not only IoT (will) gather data about us it is already happening. There must be a social awareness of these activities.
When it comes to coffee I feel the same :-). But this kind of solutions are available today so you don't have to wait, now you can drink your morning coffee after you wake up.
Delete1. Will interoperability between devices (made by different companies) enables easier and wider access to Internet of things stuff?
ReplyDeleteYes but it will be limited by some manufacturers (life example: Apple and their original counterparts to every type of plug).
2. Will IoT enrich our lives or will it spoils us?
It will enrich our lives. Maybe an influence won't be as wide as in GSM example, but for a large number of people it will something without they won't be able to live normally. Will it spoil us? Everyone should answer this question himself, I think that IoT is something that cannot be avoided in civilization progress. The point is to find a "happy medium".
3. What do you think about fact that some devices made specially for helping you in everyday tasks, are sending over 70% of gathered data to its manufacturers and this companies are using this data in business fields (for example they are preparing special advertisements for you)?
Simply, it gives and it takes. I'm aware that Google is collecting data about my searches constantly but in other hand I cannot imagine work in IT without such a search engine. Hopefully the use of information won't touch me more than a personalized ads.
About Apple stuff it's true. When it comes to GSM example we never know what future will bring us. The same situation is with data usage we never know what will come.
DeleteWill interoperability between devices (made by different companies) enables easier and wider access to Internet of things stuff?
ReplyDeleteOf course it will. Actually I think it is a must for fully functional IoT.
Will IoT enrich our lives or will it spoils us?
In my opinion Internet of Things will spoil us. We are getting used to convenient things very quickly and it is getting a bit difficult when they are gone even for a short time.
I felt weird when my smartphone broke up. I realized then how much I used it.
What do you think about fact that some devices made specially for helping you in everyday tasks, are sending over 70% of gathered data to its manufacturers and this companies are using this data in business fields (for example they are preparing special advertisements for you)?
I don't like this fact. I would prefer not to reveal any data about me to this companies, but if I want to use some devices I just to have to agree with it. It is not that bad when this data used only for advertisement.
You should to try to use old mobile phone :-) (like Nokia 3310). After this type of surgery you gonna realise how much you miss your smartphone.
DeleteI also can't imagine fully working IoT without interoperability. It's just doesn't make sense another way. I'm pretty sure that IoT will enrich our lives. Exchanging realtime data between all kind of devices can be really beneficial. But dangerous as well. Unfortunately, selling those data to third parties are part of their business model.
ReplyDeleteThat's quite interesting thanks.
DeleteWill interoperability between devices (made by different companies) enables easier and wider access to Internet of things stuff? - Obviously it will enable the users to gain more information and knowledge about the surrounding world, which is a very important thing with reference to sustainability of our ecosystem. The more we know, the better we can act in order to manage our resources for example.
ReplyDeleteWill IoT enrich our lives or will it spoils us? - Both - we will be able to access any information we need in an instant, but we will get too lazy to learn anything by ourselves. However, it is possible that we won't need to gain knowledge - some people say, that we are entering the era of creativity - it is not the knowledge or information you posses that counts nowadays, but the creative ways you use it in.
As for the fact that 70% of gathered data goes to the device manufacturers and they are using it for their own purposes - firstly, I am thinking "They will soon know too much about my habits and behaviours and they will be selling me virtually anything without me even being conscious of it. Secondly, I envy them for having so much interesting data - I would love to use it for my own research!

Well I won't answer in all questions because I don't feel that I am actually a specialist in this interesting area. But I tell you a story from that happens about 25 years ago. In the beginning internet was a great library of knowledge. In beginning it was a great channel of communication that required only 56 Mbps modems to load fast all web pages. All information was short and have whole information on each subject. I was happy to have communication channel to all my real friends and I was pound to belong to elite of the city. There was off course mistakes like marketing campaigns in popular vortals but who cares about things that was not interesting unless it tries to prevent you from seeing a content. In future I can predict that same would happen with IoT. I hope that at beginning we would be fascinate about IoT but with Time everything would be corrode and we will analys it on base of current Internet problems. At least we would have an a base to make a compression about all patologys in this technology.
