Week 2 [30.03-5.04.2020] Music for a Brighter World

It's known that music affects our well-being. Relax or de-stress. Most of us can't work without radio or just our favorite music. I found an article in which it was investigated how music affects the perception of light and dark. Music for a Brighter World: Brightness Judgment Bias by Musical Emotion ( https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0148959 ) Please read this article and then answer a few questions:

1. What kind of music do you like to listen to? Why this one?
2. Do you change the type of music depending on the task or well-being?
3. Can it really be said that music changes the perception of colors, reality and the world?

For me music is very important and accompanies all day. I can't function personally without music. I usually listen to symphonic metal, especially NighWish. I also like Jazz especially classical (Louis Armstrong e.g.). But what I listen to strongly depends on the task and well-being.

  1. 1. What kind of music do you like to listen to? Why this one?
For me it is heavy to answer this question because I don’t have a specific kind of music that I like. When I listen to some music I know I like it or not. For some reasons most music that I listen to is classical music. I like Beethoven or Mozart. Why this one? It is a good question. When I was in junior high school I met a good music teacher. She lived music. She played us Mozart nad Beethoven. She was amazing when she told us about music or how to read music notes. She told us that some kind of music can free our souls when we close our eyes. She was my inspiration. From this moment I have sentiment for classical music

    2. Do you change the type of music depending on the task or well-being?
Sometimes I changed. When I want to relax I listen to classical music nad close my eyes. That’s work for me. When I work I don’t listen to any music because I have problem with concentration. I often talk to my self when I need to find solution for my problems. This work great for me and my performance is good. I often change music depending on my well-being. For that I have my own playlist created from many songs and different kind of music.

    3. Can it really be said that music changes the perception of colors, reality and the world?
I think that music has a great power and probably it can changes the perception of colors, reality and the world. I heard that some kind of music help people to return to health. Music give them power to fight. When we are angry and listen to a music that we love then in short time our anger disappeared. Some people calm down when listen to music.

    1. Thank you very much, and you gave me a lot to think about. You talk to yourself, I listen to music. Each of us has some form or way to solve our problems. I think that any method that is effective is good or very good. Once a psychologist advised hugging to trees or a loud scream. It's also a nice method but to discharge emotions.

  2. 1. What kind of music do you like to listen to? Why this one?

I like music played purely, ambitiously played, every kind is good. It is important that the performer is not Mr. Wiśniewski Mrs. Doda or pretending to be a composer, Piotr Rubik, I do not like cheesy music. I like compositions by Mr. Lutosławski, Wojciech Kilar, especially this music for films. I also like folk music. Folk, as a separate musical genre, is little known in Poland, because its appearance is not accompanied by any mass fashion. Well, maybe apart from highlander music. In Poland, the band Tuya is becoming increasingly popular. Personally, I like remixes of folk music songs that fall into my ears.

    2. Do you change the type of music depending on the task or well-being?

I can't listen to other music when I'm sad and other music when I'm funny. I have read somewhere that sad music can make depression worse.

    3. Can it really be said that music changes the perception of colors, reality and the world?
When I drive a car, I prefer the music to stimulate, but when I learn, I prefer the music to be calm. In general, scientists have noticed that Baroque music, which has a rhythm of 60 beats per minute, helps to learn faster. Calm tones will lower your blood pressure and reduce the number of heartbeats, bringing them into a calm rhythm. This will help you to relax and ultimately make learning easier. Additionally, in soothing and cheerful Baroque songs you can hear violins, harps and guitars. The music for the car should be dynamic.
It should suit our musical tastes. It shouldn't be too impulsive, noisy and fast songs accelerate the pulse and make us press the accelerator more strongly. It must have clearly audible instruments, preferably drums or a guitar. It cannot be too calm and sleepy.

    1. Thank you, second answer and how different from the previous one. However, in each of us music releases different feelings. I know the topic is very philosophical, but can we feel frustrated at some point during #zostanwdomu? Music not only soothes manners but also de-stresses. So #zostanwdomu and listen to music!

  3. 1. I listen to many types of music, including j-rock, k-pop, pop-punk, metal, electric-pop. In fact, I can listen to everything that catches my ear regardless of the genre. I have my favorite bands present and those from years ago to which I like to come back and listen to them depending on the mood. Sometimes when I like a song from a given artist, I start to listen to other songs, but none is good or similar. Sometimes I start to listen to a new band and it turns out that I like the whole discography. It depends a lot. I like cheerful, energetic music, but above all I like to listen to songs in which the authors want to tell us something, a story, a message, an idea, that's why, for example, I like Disturbed metal songs.

    2. Yes, very often. If I am working on something undemanding to concentration, I play my favorite songs on Spotify and if I get into the vortex of work, I let random songs later fly by recommended by Spotify, if I like something very much, I add it to my favorites. If I have a specific mood or want to listen to a particular band, I listen to their discography. I'm the type of person who associates events in his life with a song. For example, when something bad happened and to cheer up I listened to a band or song, after some time, if I hear a song, it reminds me of hard times and I skip it until my head becomes neutral again. Sometimes it can last for several years :D

    3. Of course it is. Each of us, even if we do not listen to too much music, if we hear a song on the radio, we are able to determine whether it improves his mood or irritates him. There's a reason that music is played in many stores to make your shopping experience more enjoyable. I like research that shows how the type of music affects even plant growth. Many of us escapes into the world of music to relax, go to a concert to de-stress. It is often enough that we play our favorite song in the morning and our day starts better. Music also helps to create the world in films so that we can empathize with it better and expresses what cannot be done with the set design. So in my opinion music is an important element of our lives.

    1. Yes, your statement also shows that music penetrates strongly into your world. The question remains, however, whether music affects the perception of the world. You write that if you listen to something cool in the morning, the day is cooler. Mine too. I also think that music strongly affects how we perceive the day. Thank you for the nice comment.

  4. 1. What kind of music do you like to listen to? Why this one?
If you believe my spotify, then my favorite genre of music is indie rock.
Why? this is a very difficult question, it all depends on the mood and in what process you listen to music. For example, if I work, I prefer calm music to help me concentrate, when I play something, it can be something at a fast pace.

    2. Do you change the type of music depending on the task or well-being?
Yes, I wrote this in the answer above, in addition, throughout my life, taste preferences changed greatly, once I listened to trance music and dance music and smoothly switched to calm indian rock

    3. Can it really be said that music changes the perception of colors, reality and the world?
It's hard to say about perception, rather I’m already changing my perception and for this I’m looking for the right style of music

    1. Wow, Indie Rock is a very interesting alternative to normal rock music. Hence the name alternative rock. Some especially in Great Britain call all alternative music indi. See, maybe I will repeat myself, so far everyone is listening to something else. However, for each of us music is quite important.

  6. The time when I listen to a music the most often is probably driving. I choose lively and cheerful music, especially when driving in the morning. Indeed in may affect the way I'm driving, maybe I'm more willing to yield the right of way when I doesn't have to. The problem is I don't have any downloaded album so I'm at the mercy of YouTube recommender system which loops quite often. It irritates me to hear the same song for the 5th time in row and I can't change it as there are no red lights when they're needed...

I also tried to listen to a music while writing but it's also getting irritating after a while. But for easy, repeatable or boring tasks music is can be really helpful.

I'm not sure if music changes the perception of the world. I haven't experienced such phenomena.

    1. Well, not everyone must have their play list on the phone. Some rely on luck, others just on RMF FM. It's important that as you wrote, music also affects you. If it makes the roads to work safer, estimate! Thank You!

  7. 1. What kind of music do you like to listen to? Why this one?

I don't have a favorite music genre. But most often I listen to rock and soundtracks from movies and games. This gives me the greatest pleasure while listening.

    2. Do you change the type of music depending on the task or well-being?

Of course, when I get to work in the morning I listen to stronger sounds to wake up and gain energy for the whole day. However, when I need to focus I listen to calm and disgusting music, e.g. classical.

    3. Can it really be said that music changes the perception of colors, reality and the world?

I think there's some truth in that. It is not without reason that we say "music soothes manners".

    1. Hey, there's no music you can't listen to. Warsaw autumn - very hard music for me, great for others. It's good, however, that you also enjoy music and improve your mood.

  8. 1. What kind of music do you like to listen to? Why this one?

It's fully depends on my mood. From time to time I need to wake up so I'm listening rock or electronic music. Once in a blue moon I want to listen blues or classical music. I can't stand "hard rock" where people (only in my opinion so don't feel offended) just screaming withoud any lyrics :D
Music which I like the most is connection different type of music e.g. Lindsey Stirling (fiddle with electronic music).

    2. Do you change the type of music depending on the task or well-being?

Sure! That's pretty common...I don't know anyone who will be listening regee while exercising ;)
Moreover music change our behaviour so it's very useful to change it in right way. Before sleep I'm listening calm music for relax and when I have have to do many things in short period o time I'm listen rock to end everything faster.

    3. Can it really be said that music changes the perception of colors, reality and the world?

I disagree. Music can change our behaviour but only a little. If It was a true and music could changes our perception then we could observe it everyday. In addition, hearing and eyesight are two separate senses, so it seems unlikely that the colour could depend on the music.

  9. 1. What kind of music do you like to listen to? Why this one?

I’m listening to vary type of music depending on time of day, my mood, activities I’m taking. Music is very important in my live it fill up all of my days. Together with my husband we started our vinyl collection, and we are adding something to it every month. This month new one’s are: George Ezra and Guano Apes, so light blues / folk rock, and strong rock rhythms.

    2. Do you change the type of music depending on the task or well-being?

Of course, I choose my playlists depending of what I’m doing. It will be different ones if I’m tired, and trying to relax, from when I’m looking for energizing bit to start cleaning up / exercising, I also have special one for working / learning. The latest discovery I have made is lullaby version of almost every music 😊

    3. Can it really be said that music changes the perception of colors, reality and the world?

I’m in favor of this theory, music influence our emotions, can give us energy or drag us down. I know that this trick is used by social behaviorist to make us buy more in malls, it can also influence our style of driving or efficiency of working. Based on results of studies shown in the article music is really changing our perception of colors

  10. 1. What kind of music do you like to listen to? Why this one?
I could cite "Blues Brothers" movie:
    - what kind of music do you usually have here
    - oh, we got both kinds: we got country AND western
So, I listen to all kinds of music: classic heavy-metal, power-metal, folk-metal, doom-metal, black-metal... And anything around. Recently I got into "Ye Banished Privateers", a Swedish pirate-folk band, with cheerful songs like "Bring out your dead", "Hoist the Yellow Jack" (yellow jack was the flag for disease on ships or in port), "Ship is sinking", "Dead Man's Song". I have no idea why this.

    2. Do you change the type of music depending on the task or well-being?
As for well-being - I'm not sure. It really might be other way around as well. Or something between, when music brings good or bad memories and alters my mood. As for task, I don't do much apart from reading and writing, and for this I like to stream some dark synthwave / retrowave music. It brings memories when programming was all just pure joy and I had plenty of time.

    3. Can it really be said that music changes the perception of colors, reality and the world?
After reading the paper, I can conclude happy music certainly can. As for negative impact, it seems that sad and scary is not perceived the same way by different subjects, so statistical dependence is less visible. It's not that surprising, hearing is very old (in evolutionary sense), and quite simple, so might interact with some primal parts of brain.

  11. 1. What kind of music do you like to listen to? Why this one?
I think I have an eclectic taste in music.
    2. Do you change the type of music depending on the task or well-being?
Oh yes, definetelly. I prefer jazz during the night and electro swing, nu-jazz, downtempo, electronic, lounge during the day.
    3. Can it really be said that music changes the perception of colors, reality, and the world?
I think that it strongly corresponds with them! It's just like poetry. Some notes, in some particular time, would have an enormous influence on your internal state of mind.

  12. 1. What kind of music do you like to listen to? Why this one?

I usually didn't pay attention to the importance of the role of music in my life. Unfortunately, I usually listen to music on the radio by car. Sometimes I get to play some favorite song on YT, but other than that I'm poor at listening to music.

    2. Do you change the type of music depending on the task or well-being?

Which music I listen to depends on my mood at the moment. I often change stations when the song I hear doesn't suit me and even annoys me. It may seem strange, but from time to time I turn on the music louder, especially when I'm upset - it calms me down.

    3. Can it really be said that music changes the perception of colors, reality and the world?

On my example, I can say that music affects my mood. Blind people have a sharp sense of hearing and in this way can react and perceive the world. After all, one can deduce how one feels at the moment.

  13. 1. What kind of music do you like to listen to? Why this one?

I like music especially from 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and 20s. I like listening to rock and roll songs like “Let’s twist again” or “Jailhouse rock”. I used to dance rock and roll when I went to school and rock and roll music is with me nowadays! I like songs from Dirty Dancing or Grease. I have a lot of favorite bands, for example: Modern Talking, Village People, Kaoma. All of this bands have the intersection part – I adore dance to songs of these bands! I prefer not polish songs. I do not want to say that all polish songs are awful, because for example “Cykady na cykladach” is very nice song, but most of them I do not like but it is only my point of view 😉

    2. Do you change the type of music depending on the task or well-being?

I do not change the type of music depending on the task because I listen to radio “Złote Przeboje” in most cases. If I cook, drive, clean the room or check student’s work, I switch on the radio and it is with me all the day. I can find various songs there but still from 60s ,70s ,80s,90s or 2000s so I cannot change the type of music. Even during my wedding, 99% of the songs were rock and roll music all the guests had a great time!

    3. Can it really be said that music changes the perception of colors, reality and the world?

I am not convinced that the music changes the perceptions of colors, reality and the world. I have never thought about it. It is hard to imagine for me how the music could change the perception of color – if something is pink, it is and probably will be pink. Music can take you in another reality but only when it plays – at least for me. Some of songs tell about fiction so it is better if they do not change the perceptions of the world.

  14. 1. What kind of music do you like to listen to? Why this one?

My favorite composer is Akira Yamaoka, who composed the music for the Silent Hill game series. His songs don't resemble anything I've heard before. They also reflect very well the atmosphere of the games they come from.

I also really like Marylin Manson's album Pale Emperor, it completely differs from previous Manson albums. Like Wikipedia says - Pale Emperor eschews the band's usual industrial rock style in favor of a sparser, blues rock-influenced sound.

2 In general, I like everything with guitars. Depending on my mood, it can be Linkin Park, Marylin Manson, Johny Cash, In flames, Children of bodom, Korn, Nightwish, Akira Yamaoka, or even acoustic pop covers on spotify. I also listen to things completely unrelated to rock, such as Eminem or DJ Tiesto. I choose Linkin Park for running. I listen to everything a bit at work.Oh I would forget about Wardruna, I listened to them before they were known from the Vikings series :)

    3. Why not? Dr Costas Karageorghis says that listen to music is a type of legal performance-enhancing drug. Everyone who listens to music for exercises knows what I'm talking about.
