[Week 7] Usage of augmented reality in different areas

I would like to present article about different usages of augmented reality in industry and entertainment:

http://www.zdnet.com/article/ten-industries-using-augmented-reality-and-virtual-reality/

At the moment not every area is ready for area and not every idea is enough to properly use AR in the area. With one thing we can't argue. AR is very flexible and with new devices we have more and more possibilities to use it.

1. Where do you see AR mostly ?
2. Would you like to use smarglasses filled with AR technology ?
3. Where AR has the biggest Chance for evolution in your opinion ?

  1. Very interesting article,Set augmented reality (AR) is not so easy! Indeed, this is a transverse domain using many different technologies. The very term "augmented reality", which appeared in reference to the "virtual reality" is increasingly called into question. It is quite understandable since this is not the "reality" that is increased but our own perception,
If augmented reality has long remained in the background in the laboratory or military equipment, it is now present in many areas(Video games, Street Marketing, Marketing, Fashion, Social networks, industries, medicine and surgery, Tourism, The edition and the press ...)

    2. Would you like to use smarglasses filled with AR technology ?
I don't like putting ridiculous things on my face

    3. Where AR has the biggest Chance for evolution in your opinion ?
Augmented reality has many benefits and many uses yet to be exploited. One of its most useful applications is its use for e-commerce. Indeed, the physical store has its advantage in that the consumer can try and touch the product before buying it! For e-commerce, it's impossible ... but using augmented reality, it is possible!

    1. Augmented reality and virtual reality are strongly connected. Their both are two ends of the same stick. The funny thing is that AR has over 60 years !! This is not something new.
You may not know but AR is with us (civil things) for over 30 years :) The overlays that you see watching a match in tv is also AR. So you are connected with it and you don't even know about it

  2. Hi David,
As I wrote before I can see AR in quality inspections or diagnostic area. It can be helpful when you are for example constructor or maintenance employee. Most of operations require proper level of focus, trained eye and experience. Therefore AR can be additional input that can improve capacity indicators.

I will wait till glasses will be more "user friendly" and won't enchain other people attention :)

AR role in entertainment will be much bigger in the future. Right now VR is pretty popular, but I think that its potential is much bigger. The same is with AR.

    1. In US there is a startup that is focused on smartglasses. But the main goal is to make fashion glasses so you don't recognize that there are packed with hardware. I must say that they are doing it really good. They are producing couple of types and they all look nice.

If Ar will be popular only thanks to entertinment than this will be a very big lost for all of us. VR was popular 20 years ago, now thanks to new devices we only have a second approach for that

  3. 1. Where do you see AR mostly ?
Nowhere, easy answer. If i ever going to buy smart glasses, probably I will use them on daily basis whenever I can.
    2. Would you like to use smarglasses filled with AR technology ?
I would like to, even for tests.
    3. Where AR has the biggest Chance for evolution in your opinion ?
Industry, Medicine, Schools, everywhere if we get good implementation. Moreover, with proper software we can lower the barrier between handicap persons and healthy people. Everything depends on the implementation and the final price of the product.

  4. In the future, the lines between VR and AR are likely to blur: immersive VR headsets will admit the real world via video-pass-through or other methods (for safety purposes and mixed reality capabilities) and should eventually be able to lose the wired tether to a host PC. Meanwhile, AR platforms will be able to deliver increasingly immersive experiences as headset-mountable technology gets smaller, faster and more power-frugal. Maybe in the future we'll all wear discreet but powerful and long-lasting wireless headsets that combine the functions not only of today's VR and AR gear, but also our smartphones. Before that day arrives, over the next 5-10 years, we'll see avid gamers spend increasing amounts of time strapped into immersive VR headsets, and mobile professionals sporting AR smart glasses or helmets that help them complete their work quicker and more efficiently. I reckon in the future all issues connected with media, shopping, travel will be available through AR.

    1. connection of vr and ar ? interesting, I must admint that I've never thought about that. Size is not such big problem cause everywhere where you wear a helmet you can use AR really easy, size matters mostly in everyday life

  5. I wouldn't like to use smartglasses with AR tech. I've tried Google Glass and I wasn't that much impressed with it. But I feel that in few years AR technology will become a commodity.

A couple of months ago I've read a great sci-fi novel ("The Dark Forest" by Cixin Liu, this is actually the 2nd part of the "Three-body problem" trilogy). The author introduces a lot of fascinating concepts in it and he also depicts a city in distant future. Every surface in this city and every material of cloth is a touch screen connected to the global network. I imagine that this is the direction in AR is actually going :)

    1. Remember that Google Glass were only an experiment. We have still much to learn in terms of AR and smart glasses. There are still no rules about the UI, about GUI, about interaction. We`re still making research. This technology will evolve and it will be much better

    > HoleLens ! :)

    2. Would you like to use smarglasses filled with AR technology ?
    > As long as they make it compatible with my daily glasses!

    3. Where AR has the biggest Chance for evolution in your opinion ?
    > Education I guess

  7. I hadn’t any contact with AR glasses, I think that this is a technology of the near future. Already there are many interesting applications, for example in medicine, for drivers, in education. The potential is greatest where it will be most useful applications. Of course, price is also important. Skully helmets are one of the interesting example of AR.

    1. As I wrote this technology has over 60 years :) We just hear more about it now.
Driving is not a good example, smart glasses may affect the driver more than a regular smartphone.

  8. In my opinion one of the fields that benefits most from the use of Augmented Reality is medicine. In medicine, there are various applications using Augmented Reality. One of which is the assistance to surgeons during an operation by overlaying real time information relevant to the state of the patient or other useful information such as an x-ray, ultrasound or a computer aided microscope.

    1. Yes, medicine is a fantastic example of usage of AR. There is a protoype tested in USA realted with mixed AR, surgeon is able to see cancer cells during the operation, thank to that when he is making the operation he can cut exactly in the boundaries

  9. Hey thanks for bringing up this topic. I remember there was a similar post made some time ago by one of our colleagues. Now back to your questions:
    1. I see it mostly in enterteinment.
    2. As long as they were really useful for my every day tasks and of reasonable size to wear.
    3. As mentioned already in my answer to the first question I mostly find its use in enterteinment right now.

  10. I don't think that enterteinment is the best place for AR. This is much more domain of the VR.

    1. This is not true. The best example is a new development in games like paintball. Very recently one american company has introduce a version of paintball where people wearing AR glasses "see" a lot of addicional tactical information related to their team.

  11. 1. Where do you see AR mostly ?
I see AR mainly in architecture and art. Thanks to the Augmented Reality it is/will be possible to visualize building projects or any descriptions of sculptures or paintings. Navigation is also a great example of usage.
    2. Would you like to use smarglasses filled with AR technology?
I think I would like to try it. Not necessarily everyday. Maybe it will be as helpful as a smartphone.
    3. Where AR has the biggest Chance for evolution in your opinion?
In navigation, in gaming and maybe in medicine. I hope that some first-aid applications will enter the market and these will become popular to rescue lives. Gaming market seems to be still boosting so AR may become a substantial part of it.

  12. In my opinion AR along with VR is a comming technology. It's developing very rapidly and it will have many great application across wide spectrum of industries. For example gaming and entertainment, medicine (specially remote operations), space exploration etc.

  13. In my opinion augmented reality is/will be another level of fast and easy access to information. It can be used in a medicine, design (e.g. interior design), education, but also in travelling or gaming.
I am not sure if I would like to use smartglasses (I don't like wearing glasses at all, despite the fact I see much better when I got them on my nose), I think that my smartphone is enough for me for now.

  14. First of all, I love your passion for AR.
    1. Where do you see AR mostly ?
    Entertainment.
    2. Would you like to use smartglasses filled with AR technology ?
Of course. Having in mind previous hikikomori topic, I think I might get addicted to the smartglasses filled with AR technology.
    3. Where AR has the biggest Chance for evolution in your opinion ?
Entertainment. I think it might become another form of art, mixture of film and computer game engaging the “spectator”.

  15. 1. Where do you see AR mostly ?
I am pretty sure that there are a lot of use cases in industry and education that AR could suit very well. Most of AR devices look too weird to use on daily bases. However, I can imagine that professional workers can use special helmets or glasses to improve their work with AR solutions.

    2. Would you like to use smarglasses filled with AR technology ?
I personally love the idea. I have just ordered Microsoft HoloLens. I'm looking forward to test it. It seems that it would be an awesome experience.

    3. Where AR has the biggest Chance for evolution in your opinion ?
I think that eventually AR will be the most important thing in the industry. It will be next smartphone, next PC, basically next revolution. We will use this technology for various purposes.

  16. I used smartglasses one time, I think that technology have potential to develop. But now It is still have many damaged goods. For exaple the view is still no sharp and the films are not perfect. But in the future we can use that technology to many areas, for example: medicine, industry and computer technology.

  17. Like most of my colleagues I think that in the near future AR technology will bring many benefits in areas such as military, medical, and automotive industry. As I said before, I believe that the role of the AR in the near future will be much greater.
