Week 5 [16-22.05.2016] - Augmented reality in logistic

Today I would like to present you an article, or should I say a report, made for DHL. This international company is experimenting with AR in their business.
http://www.dhl.com/content/dam/downloads/g0/about_us/logistics_insights/csi_augmented_reality_report_290414.pdf

It is just a matter of time when augmented reality will come to our everyday life. This is not about "if", it is about "when". Currently the most important branches for this technology is related with industry and logistic because we are able to test functionalities in this sector with out wondering about how the smart glasses will look on us.

1. What do you think about AR ?
2. Do you think it will be something more common than VR ?
3. How do you see usage of AR in sectors related with industry and/or logistic ?
4. Do you think it will be something usefull in everyday life or just another fancy gadget ?

  1. It seems to me that AR will be used in the industry. But really hard for me at this time to guess what really happens in a few years. Currently, I don't see that AR has played an important role in my daily life or in the lives of my friends. But if we believe in predicting this could change quickly.

    1. It made bigger role in your life than you think. When you watch a match on tv and you see the score as an overlay than you use augmented reality :) Very simple example how transparent this technology can be. Every information bar on news channels are examples of augmetned reality. But when we think about devices than yes, we use it very rare. It is mostly caused by the fact that we don't have much devices related with AR. Smart glasses that are available are not used on street because we are not there yet. Currently we are experimenting with this technology and we are looking for good usage, on the other hand we need to find a way how to create a device that will be comfortable to use and it will look nice beucase - let us be honest - masses won't wear "ugly" glasses :)

  2. David – thanks a lot for a very, very interesting article. Modern technologies surprise me everyday but AR surprised me a lot more than other new gadgets. I do not trust VR because this technology is useful rather in special conditions. To use VR we need a special equipment, rooms etc. Instead AR can be used in our smartphones for example. This is very useful in my opinion and I reckon this technology will develop in the next few years. The potential for AR is in many kinds of life areas. In logistics, transport, factories, schools, etc. AR is already providing tangible benefits today. Looking ahead, AR is well positioned to deliver some of the future´s most intriguing user interfaces and display technologies, harnessing the potential to fundamentally change how we perceive information and interact in our professional and private lives.

Let's take a look at Google Glass. This is the best way to say good bye to our privacy. We are geting a lot of features, maybe it will improve our life, but who knows.
    2. Do you think it will be something more common than VR ?
We are experimenting with VR for decades now, however I'm still not impressed. I've already tried Oculus Rift and I wasn't impressed.
    3. How do you see usage of AR in sectors related with industry and/or logistic ?
Sky is the limit, I've seen car factories with employees equiped with AR googles. We will see in the near future.
    4. Do you think it will be something usefull in everyday life or just another fancy gadget ?
Fancy gadget which can be usefull? :D

  5. 1. What do you think about AR ?

I recall the series from the 80's titled "Airwoolf". The guy was a helicopter pilot and had this beautiful Head-Up Display. It presented very useful combat information and I must admit, I dreamed about having one. Of course, I wanted to use for something else, i.e. driving, but nonetheless... I still think AR could be extremely useful.

    2. Do you think it will be something more common than VR ?

I can't tell. Both VR and AR have their use cases. For me AR might be much more useful.

    3. How do you see usage of AR in sectors related with industry and/or logistic ?

Sadly, I am not competent to answer this question.

    4. Do you think it will be something usefull in everyday life or just another fancy gadget ?

I don't think that you can call HUD displaying crucial information a fancy gadget. For instance, I would really love to have one for displaying critical information while I am driving. Notably, I would like to know the current speed, distance from surrounding vehicles and pedestrians (depending where I look), their estimated speed, possibly the real-time information on traffic jams and alternative routes...

In my opinion it is new think for pulling money from people , it is some gadget but I think it can be good, but future show :)
    2. Do you think it will be something more common than VR ?
In my opinion it will be something more common than VR.
    3. How do you see usage of AR in sectors related with industry and/or logistic ?
I don't know because I don't work in this sector.
    4. Do you think it will be something usefull in everyday life or just another fancy gadget ?
For me it is fancy gadget.

  7. AR can be useful to provide on the fly information or simulation, like information bars you mentioned or HUDs Pawel mentioned. I think that AR is already more common than VR. Unfortunately the article does not provide detail information on AR usage in logistics. Some of use cases presented are already in use, for example traffic support and last meter navigation using Google Street View, interior design or dressing rooms.
I have no ideas on how AR can be used in the industry, but I'm not an AR expert or designer. I'm sure that AR engineers will come up with something interesting, that will be useful, not just a fancy gadget. On the other hand, I know people who consider smartphone a fancy gadget.

  8. 1) What do you think about AR ?
AR can be used many areas such as medicine, education, military etc. One of them is architecture. You can find many doctoral thesis and article about architecture with AR. Especially, AR is useful to enhance students' virtual and spatial skills. And so, AR may help students to develop their design proposal.
2)Do you think it will be something more common than VR ?

Augmented reality and virtual reality are inverse reflections of one in another with what each technology seeks to accomplish and deliver for the user. Virtual reality offers a digital recreation of a real life setting, while augmented reality delivers virtual elements as an overlay to the real world.
Virtual reality and augmented reality are great examples of experiences and interactions fueled by the desire to become immersed in a simulated land for entertainment and play, or to add a new dimension of interaction between digital devices and the real world. Alone or blended together, they are undoubtedly opening up worlds-both real and virtual alike.
    3) How do you see usage of AR in sectors related with industry and/or logistic ?

Companies such as Lego have been experimenting for some time with augmented reality to capture the attention of children. The toy company uses this technology to show customers the models they are about to buy: a simple way to help them choose their favorite product.
4)Do you think it will be something usefull in everyday life or just another fancy gadget ?

Augmented reality is one of those technologies that are attractive, fun and many brands are using augmented reality to advertise their products, find potential clients and even obtain data on their profiles as buyers. And all this thanks to applications that must be installed on phones to access the opportunities offered by this technology. Companies like Ikea, Cadillac or Mercedes-Benz have had positive experiences with augmented reality.

  9. 1. What do you think about AR ?

It is an interesting area. In my opinion can be very usefull in certain domains, e.g. medicine, education.

    2. Do you think it will be something more common than VR ?

I think that AR might be more common than VR. VR is a specific technology for certain uses, but AR is another level of availability of information.

    3. How do you see usage of AR in sectors related with industry and/or logistic ?

It is difficult to say, if I am not a specialist neither in AR nor in logistic, but for sure it might be used there.

    4. Do you think it will be something usefull in everyday life or just another fancy gadget ?

I think as every gadget it will be more and more popular.

    1. David, first of all AR has everything what we need to ensure higher level of trainings in courses. In medicine for example, you do not have a possibility to participate in complicated operation on human's brain. In nowadays you can watch this operation in 4K, X..K or VR film in real time, but AR would next stage in my opinion. (right now this technology is little bit raw in my opinion)

If we are talking about industry: you can use it to help quality inspectors in product control or in machine operator training process.

In daily life only for training or as a gadget but it is my opinion :)

  11. Hi, if I recall correctly your topic has already been discussed a couple of times on this blog. However for the sake of practising the English language, here are my thoughts:
    1. AR is a great technology which will allow us to put additional information to what we observe everyday. Sometimes it can even reduce unnecessary information to make us focus better on specific things. Reduction and addition form mediated reality MR which is a more general than AR.
    2. Popularity will be determined by the applications that will use certain technologies. I believe at some point VR and AR will merge because real-life will be able to be simulated on the fly and the various transformations of certain objects/information will be much easier to be performed on a simulation than a real-fed actual representation. I think AR will be more popular in the first years to come since most applications will involve augmentation of real-life objects and VR will be mostly used for entertainment and education (games/movies).
    3. One example of logistics applications using AR would be to project GPS instructions on the windshield of a supply truck determining the path that the driver should follow.
    4. I would totally use it if it was easier in use and didn't involve so many additional obligatory equipment which isn't easily available and/or handy in use. Both software and hardware still need to mature before this technology is used seamlessly.

  12. 1. What do you think about AR ?

I think it is great, and that technology is almost taken from the sci-fi movies. Those glasses can change the perspective to our vision of relity.

    2. Do you think it will be something more common than VR ?

Yes, I think it is going to be more common than VR - because we are living in the real world - not in a computer. For me AR is something like a bridge from VR to our perception of decribing a world.

    3. How do you see usage of AR in sectors related with industry and/or logistic ?

I think it can give some help in order pinking (it is easier to find a product in a big warehouse), equipment health (it can detect device issue) or safety and quality of services (you can monitor all moves of your worker).

    4. Do you think it will be something usefull in everyday life or just another fancy gadget ?

Yes it can be something very usefull, but the design of such glasses disgust many people so they don't want to wear them

  14. 1. I think that AR has a huge potential. Helmets Skully is a good example of applications. I see the need for similar applications in large warehouses, for example, car parts and other ...

    2. I think that AR has more potential than the VR.

    3. Applications in warehouses, navigations, display construction plans, etc ...

    4. They will be gadgets - with a huge potential (like a smartphone)

    2. Do you think it will be something more common than VR ?

So I'm pretty excited about VR. I'm not sure If this is the right approach but I actually treat AR as an intermediate step between the UIs which we have now and full fledged VR. I feel that AR will be much more common than VR usage at least in the beginning.

    3. How do you see usage of AR in sectors related with industry and/or logistic ?

Not really sure about this, but AR glasses would be pretty helpful for people working in huge warehouses or doing some complicated manual labor requiring additional instructions or online information.

    4. Do you think it will be something useful in everyday life or just another fancy gadge

I'm pretty sure that in 5 - 10 years it will be as common as regular smartphone nowadays. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the Magic Leap guys ;)

  16. 1. What do you think about AR ?
I think that AR is future for Human-Computer Interaction. Using devices like Google Glass or Microsoft Hololens should be more natural than using smartphones. I like the idea of augmenting the reality in many fields - healthcare, logistics, education.

    2. Do you think it will be something more common than VR ?
I think so. VR is great for gaming, entertainment, education but not for everyday use cases. AR solutions seem more relevant for that.

    3. How do you see usage of AR in sectors related with industry and/or logistic ?
Constant access to contextual information will improve work in those industries.

    4. Do you think it will be something usefull in everyday life or just another fancy gadget ?
I'm pretty sure that AR is a game changer and those solutions will be more useful than smartphones.

  17. Dawid, thank you for such an interesting paper.
    1. What do you think about AR?
I am always keen on the technology progress, however, I am afraid that it is some kind of a way of losing privacy. Our faces will not be anonymous anymore. I hope that these issues will be regulated somehow.
    2. Do you think it will be something more common than VR ?
I have to admit that I have always been thinking that AR and VR are the same. Well, it depends on the the performance of the device which will enable AR or VR. I think that it will be possible for AR than VR due to the more sophisticated devices.
    3. How do you see usage of AR in sectors related with industry and/or logistic ?
I have to admit that this paper gave me some new insights to this topic. I believe that this will bring some benefits to the industry/logistic areas if it will be common anf the costs of the usage will stabilize.
    4. Do you think it will be something usefull in everyday life or just another fancy gadget ?
I believe that one day it will be a part of everyday life. I think it will improve our lives, not only while shopping or travelling. Visiting a museum is a good example. The information will be attached to the objects in many languages. It will be much easier to deploy a ne exhibition, too.

In the future it might indeed be more popular than VR.
    3. How do you see usage of AR in sectors related with industry and/or logistic ?
I liked the AR solutions adopted in warehousing presented in the article.
    4. Do you think it will be something useful in everyday life or just another fancy gadget ?
As written in the article it can be very useful in warehousing operations and training staff.

Interesting you haven't mentioned but the word AR makes me think about HoloLens. Other than that, tried many mobile apps with not much joy.

    2. Do you think it will be something more common than VR ?

Sorry, have no strong opinion on this.

    3. How do you see usage of AR in sectors related with industry and/or logistic ?

With the right hardware, the results could be very interesting. See the dimensions etc of a box without actually measuring it. Let your 3rd eye scan and catch the errors for you..

    4. Do you think it will be something useful in everyday life or just another fancy gadget ?

    I want HoloLens!

  21. 1. What do you think about AR ?
Augmented reality is interesting way to sell product. People can using their mobiles learn and get more information about the things that have AR description. Especially books or newspaper have this opportunity to expand to 3 dimension.
    2. Do you think it will be something more common than VR ?
VR is in my opinion good way to learn by simulation for example for pilot training. Not so good way to using it in every day life. It has still side effects, people after using VR for long time are feeling dizzy or have nausea.
    3. How do you see usage of AR in sectors related with industry and/or logistic ?
It could make things more easy, instruction could be shown by special AR glasses for everything. I see more usage also in medicine, doctor could use AR to check more information about patient past illnesses.
    4. Do you think it will be something usefully in everyday life or just another fancy gadget ?
It is hard for me to imagine how it could be used in every day life by regular person.

  22. 1. What do you think about AR ?
I think that AR or VR connected with some IoT device would give very nice solutions not only for industry or logistic but also for normal person. Imagine AR games with IoT where all objects that surrounds you are part of a game. You can also imagine your trip to Athene Acropolis where history becomes real, this will something great.

    2. Do you think it will be something more common than VR ?
Yeah I think yes because it will extend our reality (like Google Glass), this is opposed to VR which tries to replace our world. Yeah I think yes because it will extend our reality (like Google Glass), this is opposed to VR which tries to replace our world. As me may notice with Google Glass (I don't know why they are not more popular) it can enhance our life and provide some optimisation in every day life.

    3. How do you see usage of AR in sectors related with industry and/or logistic ?
I say some pros in industry especially in engineering field where you can read some schemas without moving from prototype to desk. When we connect this with some OpenCV futures engineer will see proper schemas without searching online, everything will be done with use of proper algorithms and computer techniques.

    4. Do you think it will be something usefull in everyday life or just another fancy gadget ?
That's quite hard question. I think that this depends from price and proper marketing. Also good choice of application will move this solution from gadget field to everyday must have object (like smartphone).
