Week 4 [30.11-06.12.2015]How does music express emotion?

Have you ever thought about how music expresses your emotions and to what degree are we culturally influenced in our response to different types of music?

In my opinion, music has a significant impact on our behaviour. I would like to develop this short statement. Also, I would like to talk about how your emotions and reactions can create our life.

I used to play on keyboard, accordion and saxophone when I was younger and had more time to do it. But now, still, I know that music I used to play had an impact on my mood. For example: when I played on saxophone romantic melody I had a pensive mood for the rest of the day. But when I played on piano something classical, for example: A-dur F. Chopin, I was very rapt and it had an impact on my concentration for the next few days.

Now, When I don’t have time to play on instruments I like to listen to music. I really believe that listening to music has got an impact on our concentration, our mood and how we feel.

That’s way I would like to promote listening to music.
And that’s way I would like you to think about what kind of music are you listening to.
Everything has an influence on your life.

Do you agree with me?
Do you have any favourite kind of music?
Where do you often listen to music?
Does music have any impact on you and your emotions?

  1. Thank you for this interesting topic.
I think music has great impact on our emotions and the way we feel. You can see it for example when you compare exercising with energetic music and without it – most people get much better results in first scenario. For most people it is similar during work. I know lots of people who listen to very energetic songs at work to keep them more awake  For me it doesn’t always work like this though – sometimes when I have to concentrate(for example when I am learning something ) I need silence and then I find music disturbing.
I don’t have one favorite type of music – I like listening to rock form the 80-ies 
Most often I listen to music in the car and at work.

Where do you often listen to music?
    * during work and running

Does music have any impact on you and your emotions?

  4. I find this music topic very interesting. Most of people who present their articles chose IT topics. This is natural because we study IT. But this article about influence of music on our mind is very compelling for me. I love music. For me life without music is empty and grey. Every day I listen to music. I listen to music during traveling to work, in work, late at night before going to sleep. Despite your (Piotr Gzik) opinion I listen to special kind of music depending on my mood. When I am in a melancholy mood I love listening to blues music. My favorite blues player is Eric Clapton and I have all his albums. Blues for me is the music which flows from composers’ soul. I love guitar solos and piano solos. I have got chills when I listen to blues. However when I am full of energy I listen to hard music. I love heavy metal or rock music. I often listen to Iron Maiden, Metallica or Sepultura albums. This kind of music makes me strong and I feel I can do everything. This is like a drug for me. Hard music makes me almighty. Almost. But sometimes I am in a mood and then each kind of music makes me angry. Then I love silent, quiet and loneliness, and no music at all.

  5. Excellent article
For my personal side, although I greatly appreciate some songs, the music is not essential to me as could be literature, I can stay for days or even weeks without listening to anything particular. For cons, I like to discover new artists and net really makes things easier at this level and allows, if we can do a good sort, find pearls off the beaten paths of media, these findings are also in center of my relationship with some of my friends that allow me to put my esgourdes where I would never have dared. But sometimes I also make a "cure" a single title, listen again day after day to overdose, because it corresponds to my feelings of the moment, I guess.
I like listening music only in my car and I do not have any favourite kind of music

  6. I do agree that music affects our behaviour and emotions, but I don't have such strong opinions on this. I don't really believe that one tune could influence my behaviour or mood for more than couple of hours.

I do listen to music really often, during work, commute or at home while cleaning the house ;). Still I don't have a favourite kind of music, I usually mix several genres, although recently I'm a bit more into electronic music.

  7. I think you are right, the music has a great impact on emotions. I don't have favorite kind of music - it depends on my mood , but very often I turn on radio and listen to songs when I am at home. When I am out in fact I don' have any opportunity to listening to any music, because I don’t use Walkman or phone for playing music. So, I occasionally listen to music in shops.

  8. Music is very important in our lives. Can you imagine long trip without music? I heard about the impact of music on child's brain development. Let's have a look on a film. The movie would be “flat” without music in audio path. I can not imagine world without music. I have wanted to play the trumpet but I can not ;)

  9. In my opinion relationship is bidirectional: not only music has impact on our mood, but also our mood determines the type of music we listen.
I listen to metal most often, in particular technical death metal, deathcore and math metal/djent. But I do not limit to only one genre, I'm open for differrent types of music. I have some favourite drum 'n' bass, hip hop or electronic tracks. From time to time I experiment with music streaming services and listen to suggested tracks. This way I discovered some really awkward bands, but couple of excellent ones as well.
I listen to music basically everywhere on a portable mp3 player. At home and at work I use laptop and headphones on speakers.

  10. I've read that music has influence on brain's dopaminergic structure so that it can affect the reward system. In example there are lot of evidences regarding positive effects of music-o-therapy on patients with Parkinson's Disease. The cause of Parkinson's Disease is failure to the natural mechanism of dopamine emission. It seems that music can fix it temporary...

  12. Thanks for your article recommendation. Music has a pretty significant impact on my overall mood. It all depends on the genre/type, sometimes I need to feel more energetic (usually mornings) and to boost my motivation and will I listen to some energetic song. This for me has more or less the same effect as a cup of coffee. Also while driving (long and clear road) and generally doing mundane things where conditions don't change too fast, listening to music can keep you alert and awake. However usually when I do tasks that require a huge deal of concentration (i.e. reading or writing scientific articles) most of the times I need complete silence and music can be disturbing and have a negative impact (even when listening to calm/relaxing songs). Also I have to add that I am listening to a lot of genres but mostly trance, metal, orchestral/symphonic and sometimes 80-90s hits.

  13. Q1. Yes I agree with you :D.
    Q2. I like progressive rock.
Q3. Usually I listen music at work when I am coding. I can provide me my concentration zone and I can work more efficient.
Q4. Usually not , but sometimes when I listen only to music and not doing anything else it has big impact on my mood.

  15. Yes I agree with you. For me, music also has a huge impact. I listen to music which can energize me, calm down or relax. I listen music to quite often, but I do not have a favorite kind. Sometimes I listen type of music to a niche, like this group Byen in Polish Radio Bialystok:) Byen team's debut mini-album, "Cinema Room". It is a fusion of sounds in a Scandinavian style. It is worth to learn and listen for a moment.

  16. I used to play on keyboard long time ago, now I forgot remember almost everything (and I regret that a little bit). As you wrote, everything has an influence on our life, including music. I had few favourite kinds of music, depending on my age. Now I like to listen many kinds, everything depends on time of a day, my mood and place in which I am at specific moment. Music is inseparable part of my life, I listen it in work, home, during training sessions and driving a car. Does it have any impact on my emotions? For sure, enough to say that I don't feel so sleepy in work when music plays :)

  18. The music has undeniable impact on my mood. I intuitively choose appropriate songs for myself. My mood decides, what in particular moment, I am listen to. Music often evokes in me memories certain thoughts. Time to time particular song reminds me of a particular situation that I experienced in my life.
During entire life everyone scrolls lot of emotions. Often it is difficult for us to express what we feel. Then help us become music. I think that sometime it is easier to send someone a song than to talk openly about feelings.

  19. Despite the fact I do not play any instrument I agree with you. Music has a great influence on the performance of a brain which can be seen in the condition of our emotions.
I remember that when I attended to the high school and had next big set of math excercises to do I used to listen to my favourite set of rythmical music. As a result I had no problems with concentration and I spent less time doing homework.
I do not have any favourite kind of music. When I drive a car sometimes I like listening to rock and sometimes I listen to classical music. The sort of the music I choose depends on the mood I currently have or the needs I have.
As I have said I enjoy listening to music driving a car, travelling public transport and while completing tasks at work.
In fact, music has a slight influence on my emotions, however, when I am upset I do not pick any sad singles I try to amuse myself.

  20. I agree, that music can influence on our mood. I can often notice it by my own, because I often listen to music.
I don't have my favourite kind of music, nor favourite band. I like to experiment. Lately I prefer to listen jazz music, but it changes from time to time.
I listen to music at work (using headphones), at home (mostly Polish Radio Three), during jogging. I also attend Off Festival in Katowice every year, where I mostly get to know new artists.

Do you have any favourite kind of music?
I believe that in some human stages music plays very important role in life. When you are young you need some kind of stimulus. But sooner or latter you probably would search for music that relax you. Actually I'm close to end of my second chapter when I'm particularly interested to almost any kind of music. Unfortunately I hardly have time to listen songs but still this is my favourite entertainment. In conclusion if you are really curious what type of music I prefer the most this would be definitely chorus optionally accompanied with gentle electronic instruments or orchestra.

Where do you often listen to music?

Mostly when I am travelling but sometimes in the evenings when I try to silence myself before sleep.

Does music have any impact on you and your emotions?

Yes it have. In the beginning I was focused only on music but right now I can't imagine good track without well considered human voice part in song.

  22. Music is basically part of my life. I used to play keyboard and I listen to music a lot. The kind of music that I listen depends on my mood and vice versa - my mood depends on the kind of music that I listen. I have headphones on my ears almost all the time. Usually at work, at home and when I move ;-) When I want to chill out I listen to smooth jazz music, when I want to focus I listen to rock music (mostly alternative rock or "pop punk"). I believe that music have huge impact on emotions. I'm testing out Pandora lately, which is Internet personalized radio that learns what kind of music you like! That provides such a great experience. It really works, and I'm fascinated because of my interest into recommender systems and music itself!

  23. Music has an impact on my emotions, as well as the type of music listened to by me depends on my emotions.
I listen to many kinds of music, my number one is the Rock - Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, but also, Lang Lang (Chopin) and Diana Krall and Agnes Obel, I also love Hans Zimer in particular the music of Inception:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxabLA7UQ9k

I listen to music only on your audio equipment, portable equipment as a last resort, for example on the train. And if I have the opportunity it concert is the first place!

  24. Do you agree with me?

That's the scientific fact that classical music have influence on concentration and mood. The Bach or Chopin for example are recommended for studying. That kind of music can increase focusing, attention and concentration possibility.

Do you have any favorite kind of music?

It depends on my mood. I usually listen rock, because during listening that kind of music I can reinforce my own capacities and do more or have more fun in it.

Where do you often listen to music?

In home. In work you know how it is when you must work with others. It's necessary to talk and listen, that's why listening music is usually impossible.

Does music have any impact on you and your emotions?
When I'm listening sad music, I'm starting to be a wet blanket. But listening joyful music cheers me up.

Definitely, music has a great impact on the way we feel or behave.

Do you have any favourite kind of music?
I like modern jazz very much especially composers from Poland or Scandinavian countries. I also like strong, beautiful voices of some pop singers and singing poetry where the lyrics count more then melody.

Where do you often listen to music?
I prefer to listed to music when I am at home relaxed, especially when cooking.

Does music have any impact on you and your emotions?
Certainly, I noticed that I become more creative when I listen to improvised jazz music. Nothing rejoice me better than Italian popular music. But when I need to focus I prefer not to be disturbed by any sounds.

  26. Listening and playing music is said to have very big influence on your brain. It is said to have the biggest effect on creating links between the left and right part of our mind. Mozart music is best for playing to kids. I fully agree with you.

I myself feel the power of music on my emotions, to the extent that when I am overwhelmed by emotions I sometimes have to limit playing it and sit in silence. In general I like every kind of music that makes me happy, makes me want to dance or reflect on the world...
