Week 5 (17.11-23.11.14): Business Intelligence and Pharmaceuticals

The pharmaceutical industry is in the midst of fundamental changes. The changes have been brought on by the increasing concerns over expiry of patents for major blockbuster drugs, weak product pipelines, heightened awareness of drug safety, globalisation, competition from generics and growing value considerations with regards to access to and reimbursement of new speciality therapeutics. These issues, and more, have forced top pharmaceutical companies to change their current course, in search of a stable and sustainable path that can help them maintain and improve their current profitability levels

BI solutions are implemented in different parts of the organisation under the common direction of the CIO. Having been successful in achieving operational excellence and improving the research / clinical performance of the companies, these solutions have been increasingly adopted, albeit at a varied pace, by pharmaceutical organisations.

I would like to ask you the following questions:
-  How do you see the future of Pharmaceutical Industry without using BI ?
- Have you  participated in a BI project ?
- What do you think about the BI ?

  1. I would like to start discussion from the last question.
Q1. What do you think about BI?
Business Intelligence definition is very wide. One of the best one for me is at http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Business_intelligence where BI is described as data into information and then information into knowledge transformation process. All process should transfer data into making a strategic decision to boost company competitiveness. BI bases on data warehouse. In my opinion it a very interesting, valuable and desirable process although it is very expensive too. The company needs to invest into data management process, hardware, software and analyst in BI. Oracle BI solutions are very expensive.

  2. Q2. Have you participated in BI project?
No, I haven`t participated in BI project so far.
I work as data analyst for the State fire Service and my jobs involves mainly compiling SQL reports based on SQL on ORACLE and domain system. Once, I got interested in ORACLE BI. The power and solution of ORACLE are incredible. I did a short net research and it turned out that their software is very expensive too. All in all, I sticked to SQL Developer and JasperStudio.

  3. Q1. How you the future of Pharmaceutical Industry without using BI?
Les's keep in minde that PI has been developing for many years. In my opinion, if there had't been BI in the past PI would have developed still and the same today - if BI doesn't exist for BI it will develop still. BI can only improve business process and trasfer into more company income.

I am not that familiar with BI, but since there is quiet a big competition among pharmaceutical corporations I guess any means that improve the companies functioning are desired. Since the top pharmaceutical companies can afford it, it is probably an investment that will pay off in the future.

    - did you participate in any project involving BI ?

Unfortunately I didn't. I am reading up on Decision Support Systems though which are part of it.

    - what do you think about BI ?

If there are technological options that can improve certain aspects of any organization, I am of the opinion that if its affordable it should be done.

  5. he Big Pharma sector is expected to spend the most in BI solutions over the next five years. the European and US Big Pharma segments represent a significant market opportunity in terms of market size mainly because they are composed of large organizations. Both are expected to invest in data warehousing and data analytics to integrate and analyze information from multiple and varied data sources. These companies accumulated vast amounts of data through global discovery projects, numerous clinical trials, and post-marketing activities

This is widely justified to use BI in every sector especially Pharmaceutical. Small analytical unit in enterprise can generate more income and reduce costs. Without Business Intelligence in company other competitors would drown enterprise in such demanding market as Michail said.

    - you have participated in BI project?

In about two projects I developed BI. In one I generated reports for financial company and in other I developed whole BI which required capture, cleansing, integration and other ETL processes. I wish to tell more but I am obligated to keep it confidential.

    - what you think about the BI?

BI requires some effort. Especially where data set is huge and inconsistent. However it generate profit for company. It’s not a remedy for all enterprise problems and still requires people to handle whole system. I think there is a future in BI business for analytics.

  7. Q) how you see the future of Pharmaceutical Industry without using BI ?

    A) No way. How the earth they are going to keep and analyze years of data prior to market permission.

    Q) you have participated in BI project ?

    A) So so. My master thesis was "Map-Reduce, sensing the mapped tasks". AFAIK map-reduce is a popular way to dive into big data. Besides, I develop products for other developers hence found myself involving varying projects including BI.

    Q) what you think about the BI?

    A) My honest take would be that the BI is a shinny term we do sell the computing and all the related stuff to non technical people with big data. It's like a massive version of MS Excel with additional tricks.

Less efficient? Resulting in more expensive pharmaceuticals? It depends what these Business Intelligence techniques are used for. If it's for marketing and maximizing profits by huge companies the consumer may not be the one who benefits from them.

    2. you have participated in BI project ?

No, but it sounds like a typical IT project. I'm sure there is a lot of demand for these kinds of systems.

    3. what you think about the BI ?

When you need to analyze more and more data to make the right decision, then it makes sense to use Business Intelligence tools. Companies are now able to have all this data and it's not always clear how well a company performs without looking through it. BI can also help to find areas where the company can be improved. The danger is too much optimization which can make a company vulnerable to unforeseen situations with no room for maneuver.

Currently, almost any company reaching certain size needs to implement BI tools. Without it the company will lose with other market competitors as the IT support in business processes given by BI became almost a standard. In my opinion this applies not only to pharmaceutical but all industries.

    - you have participated in BI project ?
I am managing project including BI implementations for customers. We consider it a standard tool in our platform offering and for me BI project doesn’t particularly stand out from other BI projects.

    - what you think about the BI ?
BI became a standard in business world. This is where IT and operational and strategic management meet. Nowadays BI is getting closely related to other hot IT words like “cloud” and “big data” as this is currently the direction where IT is heading. However, the principle stays the same – companies need more and more the support from IT in the form of BI tools to survive in the market.

  11. - how you see the future of Pharmaceutical Industry without using BI ?

I think that I do not see it. It's a large industry of huge money flows that are driven by multiple variables. Introducing BI is quite essential and very benefitial on such a competive market especially that companies have resources to introduce those solutions.

    - you have participated in BI project ?

Not yet and I did not even used any. I have some experience in constructing data warehouses from my university. Actually I have to introduce some standarized metrics to ideas that I develop with people in my company so we have common ground. I have to find some neat free tool for startups :)

    - what you think about the BI ?

I think that business is driven by numbers. Numbers are analyzed best by computers. Computers aggregate numbers and allow to reason from then. Therefore using business inteligence is benefitial in thinking about causes and effects of events in your business.

I think it’s a very competitive market with mainly big companies involved. As there is a lot of information to be processed, BI seems to be one of the essential tools required.

    - you have participated in BI project ?
No, I have never participated in a BI project.

    - what you think about the BI ?
BI is very useful, especially in big companies which suffer from exceed of information. Sometimes it can be a bit misleading, usually when incorrectly used, but in general it helps make better, more informed decisions.
