WEEK 5 Seven Engineering Wonders of the World.

Seven Engineering Wonders of the World.
Nowadays, the human mind leads to a new wave wonders of mechanical, electronic and construction thereby removing their predecessors. Mankind is trying to strive for the most perfect and modern equipment. Today's engineers are wizards who perform miracles, which not long ago would have been deemed impossible. Thanks to the skills of analysis of mathematics, geometry, algebra today's engineers to create computational systems to study reality in quantum scale. Here are examples of some miracles that exceed the limits of imagination:

1 Agera R. dream car.
It is an advanced car that effortlessly accelerates to 273.416 mph. The power that has the speed demon is 1140, V8 engine with pure aluminum   5 liter. The total mass of 1 ton. This allows the car accelerates to 70 in 3 seconds. More information at:

2 Sevenstars great design.
Burj Al Arab is a building for $ 650 million. Resembling a sail, built on an artificial island. As a new revolutionary architectural design. Burj Al Arob in Dubai is now one of the largest buildings on earth. This magnificent sail, is one of the largest in the world reaches 330 yard in height. It has 70 floors and a total an area of 111 500 sq yard. The hotel is on top of helipad. It has a restaurant with a natural aquarium full of tropical fish. The building was built in five years.

3 Defend the final-Grenade XM 25 CdTe.
XM 25 CdTe is a manual semi-automatic grenade launcher that can throw out diverse ammunition at a distance of 70 yard to reach the tremendous destruction. Grenade not only fires missiles but also program them wirelessly and on pace to explode at a specific distance, or after a certain period of time.

4 Mechanical monster
The world's largest land the vehicle KRUPP BAGGER 288 is larger than the ancient Greek titan and heavier than the Titanic. Bagger is the world's largest excavator dimpled. This huge excavator has been designed by the German company Krupp for digging the mountains in Germany in search of coal. Bagger 288 kicks 240 000 tons of coal or earth day.

5 A breakthrough in computing power.
A quantum computer D-Wave One, can make calculations millions of times faster than today's computers. It works in many ways different than those classic computer. However, the most important is its ability to superposition, that is, switching bits of data in more than one state simultaneously and expressing mathematical problems in the form of energy operators, energy forces of moving molecules. D-Wave One demonstrates the great potential of quantum computers, but it is clear that the potential to revolutionize the computing is even greater.

6 Hyper Plane speed of Mach 20
Falcon HTV 10 - times the exceeds the speed of sound. It is capable of exceeding a speed of 12427.9 mph . So far, the Falcon HTV has enabled mass hypersonic flight data. This includes the verification of the reaction control system (RCS), a supersonic communication system, GPS is an amazing achievement, given that the speed of speeding Falcon than 3 mile per second, and the coating properties required for flight termoochronnej this great speed in the Earth atmosphere.

7 Icon Technology
Golden Gate Bridge proves that the impossible is possible by connecting San Francisco and Marin County. When the bridge was completed in 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge was the longest suspension bridge because its the longest span length is 1280. Not only that, but stringing the bay of San Francisco, this miracle is opposed to notoriously high wind speeds, dense fog, powerful tides, the depth of the channel 113  and serious off-road obstacles. The Golden Gate Bridge is a great feat of engineering because of the advanced construction techniques. The introduction of new developments in metallurgy means not only the advancement galvanic coating and carbon steel, but also covering leaded with power paint and surface, and later paint primer with zinc silicon and vinyl final layer to protect against corrosion.

Questions:
1. Which of these of miracles is most interesting?
2. What do you think? What humanity can still to create?
3. How far away reach of human imagination?
4. What else should we improve?
5. How do you think. How will the world look like in 100 years?

  1. That's an interesting assortment of feats of engineering. If I had to choose the one with most potential it would have to be the quantum computer, although I'm not sure how capable that particular prototype is compared to what's possible in theory. The video on the website looks impressive, but there seem to be critics who dispute the usefulness of this invention or whether it is indeed a true quantum computer. Hopefully it brings some progress to this field anyway.

Equally important is the giant excavator, as it brings mankind closer to realizing its age-old dream of depleting the Earth's resources faster and ever more efficiently. How else could we run our quantum computers at absolute zero temperatures and solve the crucial problem of what order to send the boats to the rescue?

Human imagination knows no boundaries, of course that doesn't always translate to new inventions (we're still waiting for our flying cars), so it's hard to tell what the world will really look like in 100 years. However, there is a website, which attempts to make an educated guess by placing known and expected future events on a timeline. This is the part concerning the 22nd century:

    http://www.futuretimeline.net/22ndcentury/2100-2149.htm

it's an interesting read, each event is explained in detail with references to sources!

    1. Very interesting web site. I have not heard about this site before. It is known that for IT is the most interesting quantum computer. When viewing the page I have a large fear of the future. With commentary about the future hold off.

    2. Great site! I can not stop reading it. Even if these predictions are just guesses based on current knowledge, it is so amazing to imagine what awaits us in the distant future.

    3. Trying to make an educated guess as you’ve mentioned is still a speculation where you can manipulate the degree of uncertainty.

Regarding this quantum device. It is probably a intermediate step to reach the final goal and not the true quantum super computer. Otherwise we would have many hard algorithms solved I believe.

  2. After read this article, I got a very good mood. Because if somewhere there are people who as magicians they do miracles this all human problems will be disappear soon. But immediately I remembered that yesterday heard over hour interview with the rector of one of the leading universities in the USA. Mr. Rector, by most of the interview, spoke with a slight horror that his students in mass scale succumbing to naive enthusiasm of the achievements techniques, fall into the mental trap self-centeredness and individualism. He related that, especially among future engineers, there is a belief that the whole world can be described by means of physics and mathematics, and that all truth is contained only in those areas of science. Reasons of this pathological condition of future engineers (according Mr. Rector) are in the fact that the current generation of American " intellectuals " cannot differentiate between their own emotions and their own will from the concept of truth. According to Mr. Rector, most of young Americans seem to be that the truth there are only what they in themselves feel! Taking into account the opinion of Mr. Rector I'd rather not share the author's enthusiasm. By me, in article weren't any miracles but only normal human activity at the current level of development of civilization and technology. People have this level through painstaking work and also owing the brilliant achievements of the ancient Greeks and Egyptians.

Coming back to the question, they are my answers:

    1. For me, the most interesting is, of course, "Golden Gate Bridge ". This is because it is one from the seven ‘wonders’ which is the most useful for many people.
    2. Well, this is normality for me, when people formed by engineering solutions for improving the quality of their life and others. In my opinion it is high time for create good solutions in agriculture; so as to we solve the problem of hunger on the planet. I also see great potential for improving the generation, transmission, storage and use of energy. In computer science, we have a lot of work to do in the analysis of information and simulation.
    3. Human imagination is not exhausted yet, but we have other barriers. In computer science, well you can see these restrictions in computational complexity theory.
    4. Health this is a challenge! So far, we have no major achievements in this area. In the majority we don't know why we are sick. We are dying and we don't know what reasons of dying are. We cannot guarantee anyone a life without diseases and we cannot guarantee how long took will be life. And to this yet these diseases of civilization. These diseases are becoming more frequent and have becoming greater range. Summing we are losing in this area.
    5. And how do we know that after 100 years in general will be someone who will be able to see the world?

    P. S.
If we take as a measure the size of the weight of the material used for construction then the pyramid of Cheops is still the largest building in the world. The pyramid also in many other issues is still the greatest successful engineering. So we let's try excessively do not fall into raptures on account of today's engineering achievements.

    1. The miracles can be interpreted in different ways. I think you focused too much on the word of the miracle, instead focus on the achievements of people who can create something. The miracle of engineering here

takes a completely different dimension. I agree with you that most of the investments should be directed in medicine. I did not mention the Cheops pyramid as is well known to everybody and I did not want mention

about her. It's hard to also compare the pyramid such as the grenade launcher. The pyramid was being built 100 000 workers for 20 years. At present the aim is to ensure that the build quickly with minimum effort

people. I'm glad you gave such buildings, which really deserves great recognition. Unfortunately there found itself on my list because it somehow is not very the contemporary.

    2. I believe that we would never reach the knowledge of how long our life would be.

  3. Did you make this list on your own or is it an official list of wonders? ;)

There are many beautiful things in the world. I don't want to brag but I have seen Burj Al Arab live during my visit in Dubai last year, it did look quite impressive but I would put Burji Kalifa higher on my personal list of human-made wonders:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burj_Khalifa

As for other things you’ve mentioned it's really hard to say which one I find most impressive as all of them suit different purposes. I always enjoyed beautiful buildings so I find the Golden Gate Bridge the most impressive (it's probably due to the fact that US is on top of my "to see" list). Moreover, I think that some areas of engineering can be admired much easier than others. Looking at the list you provided you can easily see the magnificence of the buildings and bridges, but there are few people that could really appreciate the beauty of a big machine that digs holes in the ground :P

I consider the last question you ask rhetorical, as no one can even predict what will happen in the next decade (and what about in a century!). But personally I would love to see some kind of invention that would improve transport, so that we could all commute to work faster (as I treat traveling to work and back home as the most time-wasting activity that I do).

    1. Yes this is my own list. I'm glad I saw Burj Al Arab in person. I have not had a chance to see why I put on the list. At the next meeting you tell me about your vacation and then maybe I change list. Willingly or see your photos of the buildings. You're right Burj Khalifa looks really impressive. Gregory is such an inventionis simply a bike :) Or maybe you mean:

  4. In the past I watched on Discovery Chanell and National Geographic:

Extreme Engineering is a documentary television series that airs on the Discovery Channel and the Science Channel. The program features futuristic and ongoing engineering projects.

Megabuilders is a documentary television series appearing on the Discovery Channel and Science Channel.

MegaStructures is a documentary television series appearing on the National Geographic Channel in the United States and the United Kingdom.

In total, these stations have issued more than 200 episodes various miracles of technology. It's very hard to discuss about what people can still to create. Every year arises something new, for example we can look at Dubai as a great one big wonder. Like Sławomir said, now the biggest challenge is a health. I believe that here we achieved very little. Of course I don't mean progress of sci-fi movies style but progress in saving human lives - for example is still a lot of diseases without vaccines.
Sorry for typos but it's hard for me to browsing the blog and write the post ;)

    1. Jacek also recommend the Discovery Chanelle and Natinal Geographic. It was after watching these channels occurred to me to make a list. Health issue is definitely most important subject. This is the medicine should focus scientists. However, the arms race and the showing of strength hard to talk about investing in medicine.

  5. Most "interesting" one for me would certainly be the grenade launcher. I suppose it is an impressive piece of technology, but it's really awkward to call a military weapon an "engineering wonder of the world". Impressive looks, grand design, breaking the known records - all of that can be attributed to the other "wonders", but in this case, are we really admiring a device speficially designed to kill people? It reminds of Nobel's invention - one of more important breakthroughs in history, but not something to really be proud of.

As for the possible future designs - sky is the limit. Quite literaly, in this case, as personally I'd be most interested in moving some of these grand designs off planet. At this moment, space elevator is a idea that has yet to be created, but in the future - who knows? Zero G engineering is a fascinating concept, if prohibitely expensive at the moment. Large scale space construction offers option unavailable on the planet and could possible create new engineering wonders.

On the other hand, all these designs are very impressive and can really inspire faith in the human ingenuity - however, if one were to discuss their practical use and cost/efficiency ratio, it falls flat. Well, I suppose the grenade launcher remains viable, but then again, military designs are usually top secret anyway, so it's probably some old toy they don't care much about anymore.

Quantum computer is another one, but I suspect that at this moment, it's merely a fancy name that has yet to deliver the projected computational power increase we expect from this technology. If it does happen, however, it would be a major breakthrough in IT.

As for 100 years in the future - there's no way anyone can reasonably predict that. We could just spread across the solar system, nuke ourselves back into the stone age or bow to our new AI overlords ;)

    1. Unfortunately a lot of money are earmarked on the military. Military projects are created in order to killing people. Unfortunately, very little money be allocated to on rescuing health.

  6. 1. I like huge things thus the most impressed me Krupp Bagger and Golden Gate Bridge. I agree with Kamil that the grenade launcher may be something what connects many technologies – automatics, telecommunication, mechanical engineering, chemistry etc. but miracles chosen by me seem to me look better and be more useful for ordinal people.

    2. I have not got any idea what humanity can create yet. Some things will be improved versions of showed ones, because people always wanted drive faster, fly higher etc.

    3. I thing that human imagination is almost infinite. However for realising such complicated miracles imagination is not all what people need – money and technological possibilities seem me to be more important.

    4. There are many things for improving on the world. As Slawek has already noticed – one is medicine. I am still waiting for a prosthesis of ankle which will be good and enough cheap to be refunded by NFZ ;-). More seriously, “nanoengineering” is the next area for improvement.

    5. When I went to primary school I often had to write essays how the world would look in the 21st century. I see that my expectations were greater than current reality. Nowadays I am safer in giving opinion about future. I suppose that we will had better cars, computers, weapon. Some parts of world will look more attractive and colourful whereas some will be more damaged.

  7. This are very nice and interesting things but I think that there are also other more interesting thing :)
    1. Which of these of miracles is most interesting?

Fro me for sure the most interesting thing and this is something that I want to have is Koenigsegg because cars are my passion :)

    2. What do you think? What humanity can still to create?

I think that there are still a lot of thinks that humanity can create we still develop our theology, technological progress from year to year is faster and faster so I think that we still at the beginning of technological progress. So we'll see what the future brings
    3. How far away reach of human imagination?
I think that human imagination is infinity for now we are only limited by technological problems. For example in first films like Starr Trek they use something which looks like mobile phone but at that time it was only fiction because of technological limitation and look now everyone has mobile phone:)

    4. What else should we improve?
I think that there are still a lot of thing that we should improve especially in medicine we still don't have good cure for cancer or other illness. In technology we still can improve our computers we should also improve our methods to generate energy and more and more other things :)

    5. How do you think. How will the world look like in 100 years?

    5. I don't know how will the world look like in 100 years till that time everything can happen. Our technology can rise in that way that we find cure for all illness our computer will be very fast we will explore solar system maybe we will find life on other planets or there will be nuke war and we will back to into the stone age.

  8. 1. Which of these of miracles is most interesting?

I like to read about a breakthrough in computing power because this topic stir my imagination the most. I am curious what will happen when we break the limits that are set by the current technology. If “suddenly” the overall computational power increases a milion times, then impossible things will became possible and cheap - like supportive, reliable and trustworthy humanoid robots in everyone’s daily life.

    2. What do you think? What humanity can still to create?

I think there is no limits except our imagination. Requirements push development forward and this development causes another requirements and so on. People need tools and computational power. This is very (if not the most) important for any engineering wonders. Without the support of a very fast computers we are still standing among our ideas and plans. Only very fast computers allow us to put all things together, plan and develop something that seems to be imposible. I can not think about anything specific. Rather fuzzy ideas like reading and saving peoples’ mind on a hard disk.

    3. How far away reach of human imagination?

Human mind has no limits. But unfortunately also the stupidity ...

    4. What else should we improve?

Our eager to money and power.

    5. How do you think. How will the world look like in 100 years?

We will stop to control our life and feel very insecure because of the uncertainty of the future. The future will be bringing us new possibilities in exponential progress. I think, during the next 100 years, the main effort will be placing onto communication and new reusable energy power. The border between what is private and what is not, what is real and what is virtual will be unclear and very blurry.

    1. Very interesting what you wrote that the only limitation is our imagination. You have definitely right. Support robots and more frequent their occurrence seems to be an inevitable process.

    2. Thank you. But it poseses a problem too. Imagine common Kowalski who will bought a new robot which replaces him with everydays chores. And this robot will break down one day. Who Kowalksi could rely on to repair it if he doesn’t know anything about the new technology...?

  9. I think most of these things are great :) - I can't choose. What can
humanity still come up with ? Uhuu, if I only knew, I could probably have
created all these "miracles" myself first :) . There is a lot of work to do
in the medicine for example. There is no limit to human inventiveness, I
believe we can do and make everything. As I said (and my colleges before
me) medicine should be the first place of attack.
I am not a fortune-teller, but I think the word as we know now will exists
no longer in a 100 years, nothing even close to it:( . It will be
unbelievably different from anything we can imagine today - post
Singularity. The Humanity itself may no longer exist; I believe so because
    Ray Kurzweil convinced me.

    1. I think that none of the engineers was not a fairy. Nobody is so good in all areas, to invent everything. Very brave words: we can do anything. You're right, but it is very general notion. Only that what do everything if not all will be needed and used in life.

  10. 1. Which of these of miracles is most interesting?
For me personally the most interesting is Agera G car.

    2. What do you think? What humanity can still to create?
It is hard to imagine as recent years showed that engineering reaches far beyond current human imagination.

    3. How far away reach of human imagination?
Human imagination is limitless but I think more important are trends in current needs as necessity is a mother of invention.

    4. What else should we improve?
I would expect some improvements in medical technology that would allow to perform more complicated operations with greater efficiency. Methods of transportation could also be better, faster and safer.

    5. How do you think. How will the world look like in 100 years?
With a current speed of technological progress it is really difficult to predict. In my opinion the world in 100 years will look not much different than today in general but details will vary.

  11. 1. Which of these of miracles is most interesting?
Quantum computers is what I consider the most interesting and significant technology breakthroughs of modern world, but they are not there yet – hopefully we will live long enough to see them on regular basis everywhere.

    2. What do you think? What humanity can still to create?
There’s no limits, I believe – so I would say, everything. It’s just matter of time. I’m hoping for time machine and teleport. ;)

    3. How far away reach of human imagination?
It’s enough to read ancient philosophers to see that there’s also not limit, and it’s great.

    4. What else should we improve?
Infinite number of things, but what I think is a priority right now is very cheap and individual technology for food and energy production that can be easily distributed to most people on the Earth so that global shortage of those things could be resolved.

    5. How do you think. How will the world look like in 100 years?
It will be completely different than we think today! :) Since I think it will be that way, I won’t even try to guess. :)

    2. What do you think? What humanity can still to create?
There is still plenty diseases to cure, poverty to fight with. There are unknown planets and not understood-ed phenomenons so I believe that world can be a challenge for many more generations.
    3. How far away reach of human imagination?
    I cannot imagine how far.
    4. What else should we improve?
Everything can be improved, the problem is that I think we have sufficient tools need to make a world to be a better place but we do not do that
    5. How do you think. How will the world look like in 100 years?
    I don't know.

  13. 1. Which of these of miracles is most interesting?

I find the quantum computing to be the most interesting for me. I believe that quantum computing has a great potential and can truly change the way we operate technology.

    2. What do you think? What humanity can still to create?

Some type of AI is on its way I believe. I do not think it could compare to the life that is created by God, but can probably add a lot to the how we communicate with technology today. I think it will work as a some kind of a reflection of the natural human behaviour while it will be operating on the decisions performed by real humans at the start of the system.
After the start it will get to the point when it will be self-sustaining.
Let's look at it as a huge database of real human reactions and decisions while equipped with enormous memory and computation speed.

    3. How far away reach of human imagination?

Let's not event try to measure the human imagination. It is unlimited by design.

    4. What else should we improve?

The way we treat truth and other people.
Once the technology would break barriers of communication the real problem emerges - how we' would all live respecting the environment and others.

    5. How do you think. How will the world look like in 100 years?

Different and similar at the same time.
Tech will be different but humans will face the very same questions.
Why we are here, and how should we live our lives.

  14. 1 Which of these of miracles is most interesting?

For me the most impressive is Agera R car. This is the essence of engineering excellence in pure form. Powerful precision, performance, design, and years of experience and practice of dozens of engineers. Built with great commitment and passion. Combining knowledge from many disciplines - automotive, mechanics, aerodynamics, physics, etc. In addition, the car can be called a work of art. Do you need something more to be a wonder of the world?

2 What do you think? What humanity can still create it?

On the one hand, we have made remarkable discoveries as a race, but on the other hand, we struggle with many fundamental problems that we can not solve. I think that in the near future, we will develop existing technologies until there is a breakthrough which will change understanding of the world. I cannot say what it could be, but for example maybe we discover other dimensions where living forms are very different than ours.

3 How far away reach of human imagination?

Imagination is unlimited, but we must remember about restrictions of our world and its laws.

4 What else should we improve?

Like most colleagues, I believe that it is necessary to progress in medicine. There are many deadly diseases which can not be cured. All the time we rely primarily on fossil fuels. The development of nuclear technology is still controversial and we can not easily produce a huge amount of energy from other sources. We send small probes into space, but we can not invent a new drive, which allowed to move efficiently over long distances. So there is a lot to invent and improve.

5 How do you think. How will the world look like in 100 years?

It is very difficult to predict what will be invented even in the near future, so it's really hard to tell what will happen in next 100 years. Very often these predictions lead to nowhere - let's take for example last years - for example few people predicted the development of the Internet on such a scale as today. In the popular scientific films from several years ago, we can see that at the present time we should travel in space, have a very highly developed artificial intelligence and androids, use anti-gravity drives, etc. But all this didn't happen. Unfortunately we have to wait and see for ourselves what lies ahead.

What do you think? What humanity can still to create?

I would like to you can be to have the basic necessities of life. Not working on these things is not a single day.

How far away reach of human imagination?

I'm looking forward to the free energy in unlimited quantities.

    What else should we improve?

Can anyone come up with even immortality.

How do you think. How will the world look like in 100 years?

I do not know probably not live to see it.
