They say, that life's a cup - but every time when I look closely at - I can see, that it's a more complicated structure. I'm not a huge fan of physics, but our reality is so amazing! We can see stars and planets but we cant see what holds them apart. We can see each other faces, but it's really hard to see our thoughts.
This week I suggest you watch an interesting&mind blowing animation, which shows that we know nothing! Sit down and imagine how much we can not imagine :).
So what's invisible? More than you think
by John Lloyd
Questions:
1. Do you have any idea how consciousness works?
2. Do you think that we have free will, or rather operate in a deterministic way?
3. Do you think that the biggest technological revolution is already behind us?
4. The fact that so many things we do not know more scares or inspires you?
So why are we here? and what are we going to do about it? :)
Spoiler: "We are here on Earth to help others. What the others are here for, I've NO idea" ;].

ReplyDeleteLook at life from a different angle - maybe we will find out, that we are living in a simulation and all current problems do not really matter :). We know how much we do not know - it's still quite a success!
DeleteYes our lives is short and we can't control everything. For that reason this life is not the main purpose. There is something more, ... much more :)
DeleteI have to admit I enjoyed watching the video (the last statement was brilliant :) ). As for the consciousness and determinism - this reminds me of some discussion I have heard several years ago: is it possible for a machine to understand how it works "behind the scenes". I have no idea whether we operate in a deterministic way or not. To some extent we probably do, however the number of possible "configurations" makes the pattern impossible to see. On the other hand I like to believe, that we also have some choice.
ReplyDeleteTherefore I believe that consciousness exists at the level of quantum mechanics - where nothing is certain and determined :)
DeleteI'd say consciousness is something that can be attributed to many animals, self-awareness however is much more rare (few animals can recognize themselves in the mirror, but there are some that pass the mirror test, e.g. elephants, magpies). Whether we want to call sufficiently complex machines with sensors and processing units conscious depends on the definition of consciousness.
ReplyDeleteThe problem with determinism is that we won't ever know all the variables that describe the current state of the universe, so as far as we're concerned the future can't be predicted. That doesn't rule out the possibility that physically everything is determined, but we may never be able to prove that.
I think it's interesting to realize that most of our technological progress happened so quickly (since the industrial revolution), almost as if it had to happen once we've reached a certain point. We'll see how long we can continue on this path, running out of resources can slow us down. Same with the things we don't know, it seems like just a matter of time before a problem is solved and then more problems are created.
I agree - especially with the last part! Most probably - for someone living in a more developed culture we look like ants - small and focused on one purpose.
DeleteMaybe it's sometimes better NOT to know. This drive for knowledge is an addiction, but the more data an individual absorbs the bigger clutter it creates in his or her mind. Each person makes intelligent choices, weights pros and cons of every situation based on their previous experience or observations. So yes, people have free will, but it seems that the Maker wasn't so generous with courage. People are so afraid to fail, that they rarely take the risk to do what they really want.
ReplyDeleteI think that just as people thought that Earth is flat and the Sun surrounds it, everything that we know may prove to be false. Therefore I am neither scared nor inspired by the amount of "invisible" mentioned in the movie. I'm curious what will happen next, what will physicist find by using Large Hadron Collider, because who knows? Maybe it will be something that will finally combine faith and science?
Technological revolution is already behind us. It happened in the late eighteen hundreds by changing the way people lived. The machines, instead of freeing us from everyday troubles took away the natural course of life. We no longer use our bodies to hunt, gather and migrate. They've become shells, vehicles in which we pretend to enjoy ourselves. Yes, we have electricity, skyscrapers, airplanes and nanotechnologies. So what? People are still starving around the world, and technology and the global climate warming is definitely not beneficial to the future of humankind. How long do we really have until we destroy Earth completely? The chances of finding another planet like ours are rather slim at the moment. Są little, that they're almost invisible.
Consciousness is just another prof of God. Since no one can explain it - it must be a Gods' doing, or Aliens. I don't know how or why it works, but I truly believe that a lot of bad things can happen if and when humans will understand that.
or we are living in a Matrix ;]. But seriously - I agree, and must admit that as far as i know - NASA is really underpaid in those days. We spend a lot of budget on the wars - the war, unfortunately, also bring economic development.
DeleteNumber of things we do not know increases with the number of things that we know, or we think we know. Almost every theory about the world from the past was overthrown or expanded and replaced with a different that adapts to new discoveries. On this basis it is possible to predict that everything about the world we now know is not true and certainly it is not the whole truth.
ReplyDeleteI believe that we have free will but our freedom is limited from the very beginning by the environment in which we find ourselves, and it is the main factor which will determine what we actually do in life or where we will be in a few years.
I really liked the WIT’s comparison of life to the river.
Interesting idea - I think a lot of evidences, however, speak for the fact that every other setting of the environment (for example, different gravity) really would make life on earth impossible (at least in this version, we now know).
DeleteWhat is visible and what are observable are very different things. I don't find this fascination with "visibility" all that interesting. It actually seems to be a rather elementary understanding of how we experience the world to base so much on "visible." Some interesting observations, however his point on the laws of physics was very misguided, those laws are derived from observation and would change instantly if we suddenly realized we had been mistaken this whole time, the gods he compares them to work on the mirror opposite principles Most pointedly, the human race now does know what it doesn't know. That is to say, we know what it is we have to find out in order to know everything, or close to it.
ReplyDeleteI don’t have any idea how consciousness works. In my life I only try to live consciously. So maybe I treat consciousness as another machine in my life.
ReplyDeleteI present opposite position to WiT in my life’s boat. I still try to flow where I want – not only to down. Probably it is sign of my middle age crisis. I rather don’t believe in operating in a deterministic way – I think that very often we feel that we don’t have possibility of choosing when we made incorrect decision much more earlier.
I am not sure that the biggest technological revolution is already behind us. I am not even sure that there was only one the biggest technological revolution (technological doesn’t mean industry in my mind). Because how to compare creating a microprocessor, discovering a wheel and using flint for starting a fire?
I think that many undiscovered things inspire me to discover them. Of course my discoveries are yet quite small. I don’t pretend for Noble’s prize. But I am happy that I did them.
1. Do you have any idea how consciousness works?
ReplyDeleteNo but I know it does :)
2. Do you think that we have free will, or rather operate in a deterministic way?
At the church they told us some time ago that we have it and I will try to stick with this theory :) On the other hand as a scientist I may try to classify this as higher level of determinism, I mean by this such thing that everything what we are doing is result of something but we often we don't know of what.
3. Do you think that the biggest technological revolution is already behind us?
I think positive response to this statement would have stop civilization advancement...
4. The fact that so many things we do not know more scares or inspires you?
Neither, but I think I don't have any meaningful response to this. In general I try not to think about such complicated matters :)
1. Do you have any idea how consciousness works?
ReplyDeleteIn fact, I don’t know
2. Do you think that we have free will, or rather operate in a deterministic way?
I think people have free will. This idea was widely discused by philosophers over the centuries. Most of them believed that humans have free will but some, specifically in the 18-th century discribed the universe as a “clock-work system”, were everything is determined, including all the atoms movements and therefore people have no free will at all.
3. Do you think that the biggest technological revolution is already behind us?
For sure technological revoultion in the pass were a major impact on today's world but everything ahead of us
4. The fact that so many things we do not know more scares or inspires you?
It’s scare thing that we know so little.

ReplyDeleteI must admit that the John’s talk was interesting. You can probably find endless list of things with similar level of visibility to human beings.
ReplyDeleteWhat a deep topic.
1. Do you have any idea how consciousness works?
No but believe that it does work and does exist.
2. Do you think that we have free will, or rather operate in a deterministic way?
Yes. I believe that we have free will. It’s very close to the faith. In my view it cannot be perceived apart. I believe that we’ve been given the free will to prepare ourselves for what we will experience in the eternal life.
Free will is a great power and great power comes with a great responsibility as someone once said.
3. Do you think that the biggest technological revolution is already behind us?
You start with questions about the most important things in Universe and now you concentrate on technology? What a shift :)
Technology is irrelevant and not important in the perspective of the existence secret.
Down to Earth we’ve just begun. Technology will grow in directions we cannot foresee now.
4. The fact that so many things we do not know more scares or inspires you?
There is no need to be afraid of things even when we do not understand them. We must be responsible and cautious but not scared.
So why are we here? and what are we going to do about it? :)
We are here for the purpose although the purpose itself is still uncovered.
Spoiler: "We are here on Earth to help others. What the others are here for, I've NO idea" ;].
Funny :)
1. Do you have any idea how consciousness works?
ReplyDeleteConsciousness is... but how it works I do not know, who knows? :)
2. Do you think that we have free will, or rather operate in a deterministic way?
What is free will? In my opinion, "free will" is determined by past states
(if you have "defined" past, You can not "wish or chose" something else),
so in my opinion we operate in a deterministic way.
3. Do you think that the biggest technological revolution is already behind us?
Who knows? :) Maybe tomorrow somebody will show a quantum computer, or teleportation machine :)
4. The fact that so many things we do not know more scares or inspires you?
This is a hard question. On one hand, I was curious, on the other hand
I ask myself whether new inventions do not lead to the destruction of humanity.
"We are here on Earth to help others. What the others are here for, I've NO idea" - the best text that I heard this year :)
1. Do you have any idea how consciousness works?
ReplyDeleteI don't havav any idea how it works
2. Do you think that we have free will, or rather operate in a deterministic way?
I think that yes we have free will everyday in each minutes we make some decision which they have some consequence
3. Do you think that the biggest technological revolution is already behind us?
we don't know that because many things are still waiting to discover so it is hard to say what will be in the future
4. The fact that so many things we do not know more scares or inspires you?
Hard to say but i think that inspire me but we need to remember that if we discover something new we should use that knowledge in property way.
It is a very informative and useful post thanks it is good material to read this post increases my knowledge. Dernières nouvelles du cameroun
