Week 6 [14-05 - 20-05-2018] Creativity of digital evolution


Hello!

I have an interesting and a bit light paper, entitled "The Surprising Creativity of Digital Evolution: A Collection of Anecdotes from the Evolutionary Computation and Artificial Life Research Communities". It's indeed a collection of anecdotes, gathered from over 2 dozens of researchers, exposing surprising results of evolution in action: https://arxiv.org/pdf/1803.03453.pdf

After reading it, I came up with some questions:

  1. Do You think we can draw parallels between such surprising results of digital processes and real biological evolution? Or is it just our over-interpretation?
  2. Is there any point in research on safety of AI systems, or we will be outsmarted anyway?
  3. Does it mean that humanity is doomed to extinction, when faced with evolution of other entities that could, in future, be accelerated practically indefinitely?

Week 6 [14.05 - 20.05.2018] Modelling for Improved Cyber Security in Smart Distribution System

Hi all,
Today I would like to present an article about cyber security in smart distribution systems.

Smart distribution systems are part of our life, even though we are not interacting with them directly. Electric power distribution systems are a good example of such system. Creating efficient system, resistant to extreme events, like water floods, blizzards and so on is crucial. However, increasing protection from natural disasters isn't the hardest part. Nowadays, cyber security is as important. It's easier to hack into the power grid and disable electric power in whole city or country.
Few questions:
1. Can you give an example of the smart distribution system (excl. electric, water)?
2. Have you heard about attacks on smart distribution systems?
3. Do you think IoT can improve the reliability of such systems?

Week 6 [14.05 - 20.05.2018] Elon Musk's underground tunnels

Hi, everybody!
Before presenting my article, I should say, that I am a big fan of Elon Musk`s activity. His inventions are ones of the most impressive nowadays, so information about them is widely spread beyond our technological area. Here you can find his short biography and a little bit about his creations. As you can see, he is closely connected to such companies as PayPal(company operating a worldwide online payments system), SpaceX(aerospace manufacturer and space transportation services company) and Tesla(specializes in electric vehicles, energy storage and solar panel manufacturing). Not far ago, he presented a new invention to the world - underground tunnel for cars. So, the questions are:
1. What Elon Musk’s invention is the most affecting for you own?
2. Why the person, who was born in South Africa and never did the car engineering before, could invent an electric car, but other global automobile marques, like Mercedes, who have been doing it for a dozens of years, couldn’t present a worthy competitor still?
3. Would the underground tunnel help people to solve the traffic jams problem?
 4. Is it safety, in your opinion?
 5. Is this project considered to be useful in our society?

Week 6 [14.05 - 20.05.2018] The security and privacy of IoT toys


Hello everyone,

I would like to present you an article about the security and privacy of smart toys for children:


IoT toys coverage not only the market, but also win hearts of our children. The proposed article shows a low level of safety of this type of toys. It’s aim is to help IoT toy manufacturers improve security and privacy development practices.
Children really like smart toys especially such as drones, robots or smart animals. Taking control of IoT toys, which have built-in microphones, cameras or can be remotely moved, also pose a threat to our privacy.
Discovered vulnerabilities violate the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Rule (COPPA) as well as the toys’ individual privacy policies. These vulnerabilities are indicative of a disconnect between many IoT toy developers and security and privacy best practices despite increased attention to Internet-connected toy hacking risks. Mentioned in the article results indicate that Internet-connected children’s toys require continued security and privacy auditing.

Week 6 [14.05-20.05.2018]

There is a lot of hype around AI, deep learning, and related topics. It's driven by startups promising unrealistic solutions to attract investors and by the media simplifying findings of research or simply exaggerate them to write more interesting articles or at least catchy headlines.
Authors of this article https://arxiv.org/pdf/1805.04025v1.pdf 
direct attention to limitations of deep learning. Article focus on the Computer Vision but I think that it's applicable to other areas.

The hype can be beneficial as it attacks attention of business to an academy securing more funds for research in this area, but on the other hand, it creates unreasonable expectations and leads to disappointments later.

1) Have you ever had problems with managing your client expectation because of misunderstanding related to the similar hype in your profession? Or vice versa, have you ever been disappointed after using some advanced technology because you thought it could do much more?
2) What is the most advanced, in your opinion, application of AI that you heard of (doesn't matter if actual or not)?
3) If AI could solve any problem what would you like it to be?
